Badly explained synopsis: An orphan and a Native American meet and fall in love. The Spanish are not happy, the white settlers are not happy, and Ramona and Alessandro live a tough life.

How would you badly explain your favorite book?

My last finish of 2018! The story in this novel was s dated. So dated. But if you are interested in California history, it is a must-read. Published in 1884, Jackson romanticized Californio culture, believed California Indians were people, and had nothing nice to say about American policies toward both. This book has never been out of print, and caused tourists to come to CA right as the railroads arrived.

As the keeper of the family archives, I felt compelled to frame Grandma Elsie‘s 1930s LAPL library card, along with her photograph, and an antique postcard from her collection. Ramona was one of her favorite novels. #familytreasues #librarycards #ilovelibraries

I tried to read this story of #californialove and #lostloves after seeing the Ramona pageant, but never finished it.(Maybe I would have if I had one of these pretty #vintage editions.) #90sinjuly #jubilantjuly

I included a picture of the author because I heard a talk about her, and what I found most interesting was that she was a friend of Louisa May Alcott.

Robothugs That is interesting! I would've went for one of those pretty covers, too. 😂 7y
AndreaReads We had to read this in my American Lit class in college. My prof said others might call it "hokey" but he felt it had its place in the the American lit canon. Though I do not typically enjoy romances, I liked this book. 7y
rubyslippersreads @AndreaReads Maybe I should give it another chance. 😊 7y

I have been meaning to read this forever, since it is a gaping hole in my California lit reading. It will take awhile, but I have already read ahead.

this "old-fashioned" love story is definitely a pick for me, although it took me forever to finish! there have been 4 film adaptations, including this 1928 silent version with Dolores Del Rio (recently restored and on my need to see list)! #serialreader

Finished one and started another. Still not sure if I'm a #serialreader or not.

rabbitprincess I like Serial Reader for the really long books or ones that I'm having a hard time with in print. Might end up using it for Mansfield Park, which I've tried to read in print twice 😕 7y
Sace @rabbitprincess that's why I'm wanting to use it... for those really long books. Right now I'm using it on my phone and it's hard for me to focus. 7y
merelybookish I've tried Serial Reader twice and bailed both times. Not sure if it's the books or format or both? 7y

Sace @merelybookish it's not really the books. I'm fine with those. I'm trying to get used to the format? I'm just not sure. 7y
rabbitprincess @Sace Ah, I use mine on my iPad. Can't read on my phone. I hope it works out for you, but if it doesn't, at least you've tried it out 🙂 7y
Sace I've thought about putting it on my tablet. I wonder if there's a serial reader app on Kindle. I have my kindle on more than my tablet. 7y

Finished this today on Serial Reader. I had never even heard of it until Litsy and Serial.. very interesting that it was once hugely popular. Classic romance with beautiful imagery of late-1800s California that doesn't at all gloss over the treatment of Native Americans by white settlers. I liked this story, but wasn't blown away. Some of the chapters drug on, and I was annoyed trying to read the dialog of the Tennessee contingent. 3 1/2 ⭐️

Day 21 of #photoadaynov16

After I hit snooze a couple of times, I like to wake up and read a little before the treadmill. Usually, I'm #readinginbed the day's Serial issue and the daily chapter from B&N Readout.

Good morning! 🌞

Here are my picks for #bestofoctober - It was a pretty good month for reading! #booktober

BoldCityBooks If you liked Horrorstor, check out his next one, My Best Friends Exorcism. Awesome book! 8y
Eyelit @optojake thanks for the rec - I actually read that one first. I really liked it (and think it's the better of the two, actually) 😃 8y
BoldCityBooks Me too. I liked Horrorstor but thought it got messy towards the end. 8y

Oh my word, this was surprisingly good. I had no idea what I was getting into - I chose it because it was by a female author I had never heard of. The story just sucked me in! Ramona is a woman of mixed race who falls in love with an Indian man. They struggle with the perils of living off the land as well as the indignities of racism. I was impressed with the outrage the author expressed (especially given when it was written). Loved this.

Reviewsbylola I have never heard of her either. Will have to check it out. 8y
GlitteryOtters Ahhh, I need to read this! I've been to the Ramona pageant in Hemet, CA a few times to see it performed in the outdoor amphitheater, but I didn't even think to look for it on @SerialReader! I'm one day away from finishing one of my Serials currently in rotation, I think this will be my next title! 8y
DreesReads And I want to read this because it is one of the first "California" novels that I have never read!! 8y

On a tour of old town San Diego, the tour guide shares that the historic buildings would have been lost to economic changes, except for a romance novel that became popular set in the area. How could I resist such a souvenir !?!

The story of orphan Ramona in southern California after the Mexcian-American War as cultures clash. She struggles against racial discrimination, love, and murder in this romance of Old California. New today in Serial Reader!
