Ramona is an 1884 American novel written by Helen Hunt Jackson. Set in Southern California after the Mexican-American War, it portrays the life of a mixed-race Scots-Native American orphan girl, who suffers racial discrimination and hardship. Originally serialized in the Christian Union on a weekly basis,[1] the novel became immensely popular. It has had more than 300 printings,[2] and been adapted four times as a film. A play adaptation has been performed annually outdoors since 1923.The novel's influence on the culture and image of Southern California was considerable. Its sentimental portrayal of Mexican colonial life contributed to establishing a unique cultural identity for the region. As its publication coincided with the arrival of railroad lines in the region, countless tourists visited who wanted to see the locations of the novel. In Southern California, shortly after the Mexican-American War, a Scots-Native American orphan girl, Ramona, is raised by Se?ora Gonzaga Moreno, the sister of Ramona's deceased foster mother. Ramona is referred to as illegitimate in some summaries of the novel, but chapter 3 of the novel says that Ramona's parents were married by a priest in the San Gabriel Mission. Se?ora Moreno has raised Ramona as part of the family, giving her every luxury, but only because Ramona's foster mother had requested it as her dying wish. Because of Ramona's mixed Native American heritage, Moreno does not love her. That love is reserved for her only child, Felipe Moreno, whom she adores. Se?ora Moreno considers herself a Mexican, although California has recently been taken over by the United States. She hates the Americans, who have cut up her huge rancho after disputing her claim to it.Se?ora Moreno delays the sheep shearing, a major event on the rancho, awaiting the arrival of a group of Native Americans from Temecula whom she always hires for that work. She is also awaiting a priest, Father Salvierderra, from Santa Barbara. She arranges for the priest so that the Native American workers can worship and make confession in her chapel, rather than leaving the rancho. Ramona falls in love with Alessandro, a young Native American sheepherder and the son of Pablo Assis, the chief of the tribe. Se?ora Moreno is outraged, because although Ramona is half-Native American, the Se?ora does not want her to marry a Native American. Ramona realizes that Se?ora Moreno has never loved her and she and Alessandro elope.Alessandro and Ramona have a daughter, and travel around Southern California trying to find a place to settle. In the aftermath of the war, Alessandro's tribe was driven off their land, marking the beginning of European-American settlement in California. They endure misery and hardship, for the Americans who buy their land also demand their houses and their farm tools. Greedy Americans drive them off from several homesteads, and they cannot find a permanent community that is not threatened by encroachment of United States settlers. They finally move up into the San Bernardino Mountains. Alessandro slowly loses his mind, due to the constant humiliation. He loves Ramona fiercely, and regrets having taken her away from relative comfort in return for "bootless" wandering. Their daughter "Eyes of the Sky" dies because a white doctor would not go to their homestead to treat her. They have another daughter, named Ramona, but Alessandro still suffers.....Helen Maria Hunt Jackson, born Helen Fiske (October 15, 1830 - August 12, 1885), was an American poet and writer who became an activist on behalf of improved treatment of Native Americans by the U.S. government. She described the adverse effects of government actions in her history A Century of Dishonor (1881). Her novel Ramona (1884) dramatized the federal government's mistreatment of Native Americans in Southern California after the Mexican-American War and attracted considerable attention to her cause.

Badly explained synopsis: An orphan and a Native American meet and fall in love. The Spanish are not happy, the white settlers are not happy, and Ramona and Alessandro live a tough life.

How would you badly explain your favorite book?

My last finish of 2018! The story in this novel was s dated. So dated. But if you are interested in California history, it is a must-read. Published in 1884, Jackson romanticized Californio culture, believed California Indians were people, and had nothing nice to say about American policies toward both. This book has never been out of print, and caused tourists to come to CA right as the railroads arrived.

As the keeper of the family archives, I felt compelled to frame Grandma Elsie‘s 1930s LAPL library card, along with her photograph, and an antique postcard from her collection. Ramona was one of her favorite novels. #familytreasues #librarycards #ilovelibraries

I tried to read this story of #californialove and #lostloves after seeing the Ramona pageant, but never finished it.(Maybe I would have if I had one of these pretty #vintage editions.) #90sinjuly #jubilantjuly

I included a picture of the author because I heard a talk about her, and what I found most interesting was that she was a friend of Louisa May Alcott.

Robothugs That is interesting! I would've went for one of those pretty covers, too. 😂 7y
AndreaReads We had to read this in my American Lit class in college. My prof said others might call it "hokey" but he felt it had its place in the the American lit canon. Though I do not typically enjoy romances, I liked this book. 7y
rubyslippersreads @AndreaReads Maybe I should give it another chance. 😊 7y

this "old-fashioned" love story is definitely a pick for me, although it took me forever to finish! there have been 4 film adaptations, including this 1928 silent version with Dolores Del Rio (recently restored and on my need to see list)! #serialreader

Finished one and started another. Still not sure if I'm a #serialreader or not.

rabbitprincess I like Serial Reader for the really long books or ones that I'm having a hard time with in print. Might end up using it for Mansfield Park, which I've tried to read in print twice 😕 8y
Sace @rabbitprincess that's why I'm wanting to use it... for those really long books. Right now I'm using it on my phone and it's hard for me to focus. 8y
merelybookish I've tried Serial Reader twice and bailed both times. Not sure if it's the books or format or both? 8y

Sace @merelybookish it's not really the books. I'm fine with those. I'm trying to get used to the format? I'm just not sure. 8y
rabbitprincess @Sace Ah, I use mine on my iPad. Can't read on my phone. I hope it works out for you, but if it doesn't, at least you've tried it out 🙂 8y
Sace I've thought about putting it on my tablet. I wonder if there's a serial reader app on Kindle. I have my kindle on more than my tablet. 8y

Finished this today on Serial Reader. I had never even heard of it until Litsy and Serial.. very interesting that it was once hugely popular. Classic romance with beautiful imagery of late-1800s California that doesn't at all gloss over the treatment of Native Americans by white settlers. I liked this story, but wasn't blown away. Some of the chapters drug on, and I was annoyed trying to read the dialog of the Tennessee contingent. 3 1/2 ⭐️

After I hit snooze a couple of times, I like to wake up and read a little before the treadmill. Usually, I'm #readinginbed the day's Serial issue and the daily chapter from B&N Readout.

Oh my word, this was surprisingly good. I had no idea what I was getting into - I chose it because it was by a female author I had never heard of. The story just sucked me in! Ramona is a woman of mixed race who falls in love with an Indian man. They struggle with the perils of living off the land as well as the indignities of racism. I was impressed with the outrage the author expressed (especially given when it was written). Loved this.

Reviewsbylola I have never heard of her either. Will have to check it out. 8y
GlitteryOtters Ahhh, I need to read this! I've been to the Ramona pageant in Hemet, CA a few times to see it performed in the outdoor amphitheater, but I didn't even think to look for it on @SerialReader! I'm one day away from finishing one of my Serials currently in rotation, I think this will be my next title! 8y
DreesReads And I want to read this because it is one of the first "California" novels that I have never read!! 8y
