Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots
Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots | Jessica Soffer
23 posts | 16 read | 14 to read
Sassy, brash, acrobatic and colorful . . . I want to read it again and again. Time Impressive . . . Soffers style is natural and assured. Meg Wolitzer, All Things Considered, NPR Lorca spends her life poring over cookbooks to earn the love of her distracted mother, a chef, who is now packing her off to boarding school. Desperate to prove herself, Lorca resolves to track down the recipe for her mothers ideal meal. She signs up for cooking lessons from Victoria, an Iraqi-Jewish immigrant profoundly shaken by her husbands death. Soon these two women develop a deeper bond while their concoctionscardamom pistachio cookies, baklava, and masgoufbake in Victorias kitchen. But their individual endeavors force a reckoning with the past, the future, and the truthwhatever it might be. In Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots we see how food sustains not just our bodies, but our hopes as well. Bukra fil mish mish, the Arabic saying goes. Tomorrow, apricots may bloom. A profound and necessary new voice. Soffers prose is as controlled as it is fresh, as incisive as it is musical. Soffer has arrived early, with an orchestra of talent at her disposal. Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin Moving [and] extraordinary. Atlantic A work of beauty in words . . . Soffer is a master artist painting the hidden hues of the human soul. As of yesterday your book was on its way back to you @Laura317 (a week later than promised, sorry!)

The post mark will be a little different than normal. I've been such a mess lately that I took the book with me on a trip to North Carolina and mailed it from there instead of from home 🤷

Laura317 @ladyneverwhere No worries! 6y

I finished this last weekend but have been so busy with work, class and picking up after school shifts that I haven't had a chance to get it in the mail to you yet @Laura317 . I'll get it out to you either Monday or Tuesday.

I really liked the book and loved participating in #lmpbc with Laura, @emilyjwhit9 and @Laughterhp! I can't wait for the next round of sign ups since I missed the newest one 🙈

Laura317 This group was awesome! I enjoyed every book. I can‘t wait to read everyone‘s comments! @Laughterhp 6y

This book was hard to read. It was heartbreaking. There was self harm (trigger warning) and Lorca‘s mother is a nightmare. You just want to reach into this book and shake everyone. Why can no one say what they‘re thinking!! This book made me hungry and wishing I had the patience for cooking.

Perfect Friday night! Decided to see if anything was on TV and Harry Potter is on Syfy! It appears to have the deleted scenes which was the best part of watching them on Freeform! 💕

#fridaynightread #currentlyreading #harrypotter #lmpbc

tpixie Deleted scenes? I didn't know they had an extended version! 6y
Laughterhp @tpixie Yeah I know the first 4 do at least. I haven‘t watched the others on TV enough to know if they have extended versions. 6y
tpixie Fun!!! i‘ll be home in about an hour I‘ll have to check out the Syfy channel! 6y

I‘m waffling between ok and good on this one. I wasn‘t sure what to expect from it, and it was better than I expected, actually. I felt really badly for Lorca, as no matter what she did, she never seemed to be able to please her mom. Have to admit, I thought the guy helping her was a bit unrealistic. There were a few “twists” at the end, only one that was more of a surprise to me. There are a few recipes thrown in.

Just finished my first book of #LMPBC #Round4. Good book. I don‘t want to say more until my group has read it. @Laughterhp @ladyneverwhere @emilyjwhit9 - Emily, I think you read this next, am I right?

emilyjwhit9 Yes. I think that works! We just send the book on to the next person so the rotation is: Mikala to Danielle, Danielle to Laura, Laura to Emily, Emily to Mikala. @Laughterhp @ladyneverwhere @Laura317 6y
emilyjwhit9 Also! I am excited to get the book! 6y
Laura317 @emilyjwhit9 I just mailed this book to you. They said you‘d have it hopefully by Monday. 6y

Group J, these are the books I am considering for #LMPBC - any of these strike your fancy or turn you off completely? @Laughterhp @ladyneverwhere @emilyjwhit9

Laughterhp They all sound good! I‘d be a little hesitant to read Lab Girl, as I‘m not big into science, but the book sounds interesting. The rest sound really good and whichever ones we don‘t read, I‘ll be adding to my TBR! 6y
Suet624 I don‘t get to vote but lab girl is 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 6y
Laura317 @Suet624 It‘s on my TBR regardless. 😀 6y

Suet624 Listening to it was even better. The author gets pretty emotional in parts. 6y
emilyjwhit9 I have read Transcription (great!) and Lab Girl (awesome!) so either of the other two are great by me! 6y

Laura317 I‘ll wait to make a final decision after @ladyneverwhere chimes in. 6y
ladyneverwhere These all look great! I really don't have a preference, I like surprises. So anything you pick works for me! 6y

I was drawn to this due to the food aspects, and the setting. The storyline was not at all what I expected. Some of it was uncomfortable as it touched a few nerves with women and teenagers in my life. However, a worth while and interesting read.

Quite a different story line to what I was expecting but very readable so far.
The teenage narrator reminds me of a number of women I've known in her need to be accepted and loved by those important to her.

Ultimately I liked this & it gets a pick for the wonderful food imagery & descriptions but I found it hard to read at times as Lorca, the 14-year-old MC is a cutter & those scenes made me sad & angry at the cold & cruel mother she seeks love from by learning to cook a special Iraqi fish dish from Victoria, a recent widow. I liked the relationship between the two & how they bonded through cooking. W/Bamia (Okra Stew) on my bookclub blog review.

DebinHawaii @Bi-Polar_Reader This dish isn't too bad! 😆👍 @Mariposa_Bookworm @charl08 @LeahBergen @Bookzombie Thank you! ❤️😀 8y
DebinHawaii @BethFishReads I kind of did too. I ended up leaning to the food parts which ultimately swung it to a pick & 3-ish stars on Goodreads for me but I had some issues with parts of it. 8y

Technically this Pistachio-Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna with Burnt Eggplant & Pomegranate Couscous was inspired by the movie 'Burnt' but with its Middle Eastern flavors, it pairs really well with this book about a daughter trying to recreate a special fish dish to earn the love of her chef mother while bonding with and getting cooking lessons from a recently widowed Iraqi Jewish immigrant. #litsycooks #booksandfood

Much needed haircut & highlights means 30 minutes of (sweet but) chatty stylist but then at least a half hour of nothing-to-do-but-sit-and-read with my iced soy caramel macchiato time. Hopefully I get another small chunk of this one finished for virtual book club, but I have my Kindle in case I get 'moody' & want to read something else. 😀👍📚 #readingtime

Audrey I really liked this book. Excellent food imagery. I hope you enjoy it. 8y
DebinHawaii @Audrey I am liking all the food but I keep putting it down as I am finding it a bit depressing, for my mood this month. But I'm only about a 1/3 in so maybe it will get a bit lighter?! 😬 8y

Will be on the blog soon but right now it's in my belly & it was delicious! (or ono as we say here!) 🌴🍍 Pretty sure fried egg & fried capers make everything better! 🍳😀

Errands are run and I'm settling down for a bit with my weekend #TBR pile. The tagged book is for virtual book club due 11/30, In the Blue Hour is for a Monday blog book tour review, Slade House is due back at the library this week, & I have about 30 minutes left in All the Breaking Waves on my kindle & need to know what happens. The 3-shot soy caramel brûlée latte is for some indulgence & a sugar buzz.??☕️?

KarenUK Sounds like a great weekend to me 👍 8y

Day1 #photoadaynov16 #novembertbr Part of my TBR pile for November + some audio books & e-books. A library book, book club pick, review books & I'm way behind on my BOTM picks. Too many scary October books got in the way. Speaking of getting in the way, I have house guests this week so likely it will reduce both reading & Litsy time.😢But they are crashing early (time zone difference) so hopefully I'll get a few hours tonight of solitary time!😀📚

Sweettartlaura Slade House is fantastic😍📚 8y
Zelma Inheriting Edith is on my shelf too and might sneak in this month. 8y
I-read-and-eat I loved Slade House! Finished it in one evening 😊 8y

DebinHawaii @Sweettartlaura @I-read-and-eat I've heard great things about Slade House on Litsy so grabbed it when I saw it at the library last week! 👍😀 @Zelma I'm reviewing it for book tour later in the month which means it will get read.😃 @cariashley It's the pick for my virtual foodie book club so I'll let you know. Hoping to get to it & at least start this week! 📚 @dolleygurl I have heard mixed reviews but I'm looking forward to it! 😀 8y
