Who Killed These Girls?: Cold Case: The Yogurt Shop Murders
Who Killed These Girls?: Cold Case: The Yogurt Shop Murders | Beverly Lowry
From the author of "Crossed Over, " another masterful account of a horrible crime: the murder of four girls, countless other ruined lives, and the evolving complications of the justice system that frustrated the massive attempts--for twenty-five years now--to find and punish those who committed it. The facts are brutally straightforward. On December 6, 1991, the naked, bound-and-gagged bodies of the four girls--each one shot in the head--were found in an I Can't Believe It's Yogurt! shop in Austin, Texas. Grief, shock, and horror spread out from their families and friends to overtake the city itself. Though all branches of law enforcement were brought to bear, the investigation was often misdirected and after eight years only two men (then teenagers) were tried; moreover, their subsequent convictions were eventually overturned, and Austin PD detectives are still working on what is now a very cold case. Over the decades, the story has grown to include DNA technology, false confessions, and other developments facing crime and punishment in contemporary life. But this story belongs to the scores of people involved, and from them Lowry has fashioned a riveting saga that reads like a Russian novel, comprehensive and thoroughly engrossing.

So I just finished this one. It was a little harder to get into because it was just so sad and just so much heartache and pain and uncertainty so... But yesterday and today I got into a groove where I read it. It was so good. and its a somewhat local story (well Texas) #TBRCrew #CrimeADay

Goal #1 for #JubilantJuly

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y
ElizaMarie @Andrew65 Thanks. I have one more Graphic Novel to finish by tomorrow to complete all 3 of my goals for this! I think I will be able to complete it too! Yay! 4y

I want to work on this book funding this week. I have a couple of goals for this #JubilantJuly Readathon

1. Get far in tagged book -- its a rough one #CrimeADay
2. Read 3 Graphic Novels -- Not sure which ones yet.. I will post them when I figure it out. I downloaded one already but.. I think I will probably finish it before the 11th
3. Start another book on my #TBRCrew book list. (not sure which one yet)

Not sure if I am going to time myself.

Andrew65 Great to have you with us, good luck. 😊👍 4y

This breaks my heart! I have seen some of those confession tapes documentaries and its so scary/sad that we can be manipulated in the way we can be. The justice system needs a major overhaul but.. I don't know what we need. Just know we need something!

#CrimeADay

jb72 I agree. There needs to be some sort of overhaul. Too protect the innocent but also to make sure the guilty serve time without finding a loophole to escape justice. I just watched a show where a woman murdered her husband and one of her daughters and is now raising that daughter‘s child. Apparently her daughter‘s taped confession means nothing. 4y
Bookworm54 It is a terrifying fact! Not only are innocent people being convicted, but those who are truly guilty are free to roam. And @jb72 that is chilling! How is that something that anyone has thought would be a good idea? 4y

ElizaMarie @jb72 , @Bookworm54 -- yes its terrifying! I worked in a forensic psychiatric hospital at one point and some of the stories I heard were horrific. And then there were some of the patients that you really questioned whether they were truly guilty (they lacked capacity to really understand what's going on... and I could see how it would easy to make them say whatever). I feel social pressures make police quickly convict so that people feel “safe“ 4y
jb72 True. The political pressure to convict is out of control. Police should be able to take their time and build a case that will work and find the right person. That show was unsolved mysteries on Netflix. It was the last episode I think. She was even convicted in a wrong death suit. I don‘t understand how she has the kid based on that alone. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 I haven't seen it yet.. But I plan on watching it! I love those kind of shows! (Huge into true crime!) 4y
jb72 @ElizaMarie I like them too. I watched all of them except one episode in French which I‘ll watch today. It has subtitles and I was cross stitching so I couldn‘t read them. It looks like a good episode too. 4y
wanderinglynn In my criminal law class in law school, the professor had someone come talk to us who has been on death row. He was an immigrant (Mexican) and there was clear prosecutorial misconduct. He spent something like 17 years on death row for a crime he didn‘t commit. His story was eye-opening and sadly, it‘s a story that‘s too common for immigrants and persons of color. 4y
ElizaMarie @wanderinglynn very true! I live in South Texas in a BoarderTown. And people are threatened with deportation all the time. Even if they are citizens they have their whole families threatened... the Fear is so intense for these people. It is jus super scary! 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 ooo /I will try to get to them this weekend :) I am excited! 4y

jb72 That sounds like a good book. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 It really is. I just have been having a hard time picking it up. Had been picking up a lot of lighter reads instead. But I am thoroughly enjoying it. Also.. its from Austin TX 4y

Its how we respond to the uncertainty really makes or breaks up. I have a hard time with uncertainty at times.. But I am able to kinda just go with it a little bit. Anyway I am enjoying this book. Its a little more slow moving than I had originally thought. but Its one that I have to be in a good headspace to read (so I put it off for other more light-hearted books)

So this has been sitting on my nightstand for a while now. I am very interested in this book but... other books got pushed forward. I am going to use the #CrimeADay to help me stay on track with this one and read a chapter of this book a day.

I bought this one in an indie bookshop in Houston (Murder by the Book). Being a Texas gal and into true-crime I figured I would give this one a shot. Will probably start it later this week (it was one of the TBR I had brought for this contract)

#TBRCrew

Eggs I read this 2-3 years ago. So tragic-one of the Girls was my daughter‘s classmate 5y
ElizaMarie @Eggs Oh wow. Hits really close to home for you. Did you enjoy the book? 5y
Eggs Yes-then I read 2 more about the same event. Relevant because we lived close to that area of town and shopped at the mall they refer to 5y
ElizaMarie @Eggs I am not from that part of Texas but you know how Texas is (we have so much pride for our state). My in-laws live in Austin. I plan on sharing the book with them when I am done. 5y

I knew nothing of the Yogurt Shop Murders in Austin, TX prior to this book. Four teenage girls were killed one night when they were closing the ICBY yogurt shop where two of them worked. The killers were apprehended 8 years later, but were they really the killers or had two of them offered false confessions?

emilyhaldi Damn I love TCBY 6y
Eggs My daughter was HS classmates with 2 of the girls. It shook up Austin—end of innocence 6y

This was okay. A lot of the writing is disjointed and I don‘t like the lack of sources the author cites. The book also could have used a much stronger copy edit—lots of glaring errors and muddy sentences. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think the case is fascinating, but the story got bogged down with too much detail about the legal perspectives in my opinion.

Eggs One of the girls was a classmate of my daughter. There's another book on this case too 6y
Cinfhen How terrifying @Eggs 6y
Reecaspieces Glad to know your thoughts. I almost bought that the other day! 6y

WorldsOkayestStepMom @Eggs whoa, I'm so sorry for your/her loss. @ 6y
WorldsOkayestStepMom @Reecaspieces the case is fascinating, I just didn't feel like another theory was given (like it was quoted on the front cover), and more than half the book was about the trials of the 2 men who DNA evidence couldn't put at the scene. 6y
Eggs May always be a mystery. The DAs and APD, as with most cases, are pressured to nail someone for the crime, which often leads to coercion 6y
WorldsOkayestStepMom @Eggs unfortunately, it's too common. 6y

These are crazy numbers. Also #ssdgm!

Kaye Exactly one of the reasons I don‘t like the death penalty. We have killed innocent men ( under our laws) for crimes they didn‘t commit. Not frequently, but ONE makes us murderers. DNA is a terrific remedy for a lot of cases but there are still people convicted of murder on circumstantial evidence or eyewitness testimony. Not good enough. 6y

Very well written. A page turner. Tragic story that leaves you with more questions then answers.

Anyone in or near Austin TX knows what "yogurt shop murders" means....devastatingly sad. One of my eldest daughter's classmates was Eliza Thomas. Perpetrators still unknown.....

Another terrifying true crime book - infinitely unsatisfying as it's never been solved. I can only hope they can find a match to the full male DNA profile they obtained. Those poor girls and their families. 😢

Though this book covers a tragic and violent unsolved crime with respect and in a non-sensationalized way, it was kind of bland. I think it's possible to be both respectful and able to evoke emotion, and sadly this book didn't quite reconcile the two concepts.
