The Great Gatsby: a Graphic Novel Adaptation
The Great Gatsby: a Graphic Novel Adaptation | F. Scott Fitzgerald
10 posts | 12 read | 5 to read
A sumptuously illustrated adaptation casts the powerful imagery of F. Scott Fitzgerald's great American novel in a vivid new format. From the green light across the bay to the billboard with spectacled eyes, F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 American masterpiece roars to life in Katharine Woodman-Maynard's exquisite graphic novel--among the first adaptations of the book in this genre. Painted in lush watercolors, the inventive interpretation emphasizes both the extravagance and mystery of the characters, as well as the fluidity of Nick Carraway's unreliable narration. Excerpts from the original text wend through the illustrations, and imagery and metaphors are taken to literal, and often whimsical, extremes, such as when a beautiful partygoer blooms into an orchid and Daisy Buchanan pushes Gatsby across the sky on a cloud. This faithful yet modern adaptation will appeal to fans with deep knowledge of the classic, while the graphic novel format makes it an ideal teaching tool to engage students. With its timeless critique of class, power, and obsession, The Great Gatsby Graphic Novel captures the energy of an era and the enduring resonance of one of the world's most beloved books.

I love Fitzgerald‘s The Great Gatsby. With that said, I really enjoyed this modern retelling in graphic novel form. The images and watercolors are stunning and seeing the story unfold was a nice treat! #pop22 ~ A Modern Retelling of a Classic #Booked2023 ~ Proper Name in Title

I read the book when I was a teen but didn‘t remember much of the story, and I‘ve never seen the movie adaptation.

ID: The Great Gatsby by K. Woodman Maynard with a white cover and a woman‘s side profile silhouette wearing a string of white pearls. Around the book is a string of Chrys Fey‘s pearls.

Interesting adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The illustrations worked very well with the story, and though it‘s been years since I‘ve read the original novel, I think this edition captures the essence of the story. #TeenAngst #GraphicNovelVersionOfANovelAlreadyInExistence #BBRC

LibrarianRyan I think there were 2 different graphic novel editions done. I know I read one of them. i am glad you like it. 2y

A gorgeously illustrated graphic novel, very closely adapted, although it has been condensed and artistically altered in some places. Nevertheless it captures the mood and era of the original work, and as much as I remember, the themes as well. I like the whimsical illustrations, and how imagery is sometimes literally shown. A fresh way to experience the classic, and a great way to engage new readers, although I recommend knowing the novel first.

Fitzgerald's original words are ripe for illustration. This GN takes a playful approach to drawing some of his metaphors in a literal way. It lends a dreamy air to the serious plot. I loved the way she captured the jazz age & worked the text into the images. I would recommend reading the actual novel before this because there's so much more to dive into, but this is a great way to enhance your reading experience and view the story in a new light.

MicheleinPhilly Ollie. ❤️ How‘s he doing? 3y
AvidReader25 @MicheleinPhilly We just got the CT scan results back yesterday. They think it‘s an infection, possibly from a spider or tick bite. It has caused severe inflammation of the joints and other neurological symptoms. We‘re treating it now and praying for a full recovery! Considering they thought it was tumors in the spinal column, this is good news! Thanks for asking about him! (edited) 3y
MicheleinPhilly Oh what a relief! 🤞🏼the infection clears up quickly! 3y
Leftcoastzen Hope he recovers quickly!🐶Hugs to you & Ollie. 3y

I loved the great gatsby when I read it in highschool. I appreciate all versions of the movie. But I think that is where my appreciation wanes. This adaptation is beautifully illustrated but I feel like some of the story is lost. It does not have the richness of language that the book did, and the graphics take away the dazzle and give it a soft loving feeling instead of a bright excitement. Overall it‘s not badly done, it‘s just no for me

TheLudicReader That‘s disappointing, but I will still get a copy. 😁 4y
LibrarianRyan @TheLudicReader it looks like there may be two different graphic novel versions coming out. Maybe the other one will be better. 4y
TheLudicReader Is this the one done by Fitzgerald‘s estate...art by the same person who did TKaM? 4y
LibrarianRyan @TheLudicReader I‘ll look it up when I get to work and let you know. 4y
