Vivian Versus the Apocalypse
Vivian Versus the Apocalypse | Katie Coyle
Putting the cult back in cult fiction, this is a darkly witty and sharply questioning debutA chilling vision of a contemporary USA where the sinister Church of America is destroying lives. Our cynical protagonist, sixteen-year-old Vivian Apple, is awaiting the fated 'Rapture' - or rather the lack of it. Her evangelical parents have been in the Church's thrall for too long, and she's looking forward to getting them back. Except that when Vivian arrives home the day after the supposed 'Rapture', her parents are gone. All that is left are two holes in the ceiling...Viv is determined to carry on as normal, but when she starts to suspect that her parents might still be alive, she realises she must uncover the truth. Joined by Peter, a boy claiming to know the real whereabouts of the Church, and Edie, a heavily pregnant Believer who has been 'left behind', they embark on a road trip across America. Encountering freak weather, roving 'Believer' gangs and a strange teenage group calling themselves the 'New Orphans', Viv soon begins to realise that the Rapture was just the beginning.

Meet the book that finally wrestled me out of my January reading slump. An apocalypse story that takes place in a United States plagued by natural disasters and brainwashed by a capitalism-obsessed Christian nationalist church headed by a kooky “prophet,” it certainly didn‘t remind me of anything that could ever happen in real life. Hahaha…haha…ha… Ahem. Anyway, I loved Vivian who learned and grew and managed to come of age in a world gone mad.

I enjoyed this YA book about teens left behind after family members experience #TheRapture! It‘s not Christian fiction. It more centers around the mystery of this sudden disappearance. The sequel is not as good.

If I‘m remembering correctly this is the, “Bajor must stand alone,” episode, which stops Bajor from joining the Federation. As far as Sisko and prophecies, I prefer The Reckoning. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #StarTrekSummerJune

#24in48 I got distracted by this book last night when the plan was to be reading A Head Full of Ghosts. This is darker than I expected, but I am loving it. I definitely am off my time tracking but best estimate is about 4.5 hours. @24in48

Ugh. I wanted to like this but it was just a mess. Viv is left behind when the Rapture occurs and takes her parents along with thousands of other Believers. As a non-Believer, she and bff plus cute boy search for the truth. Great concept, but the pacing was off, road trip too easy, conflict resolved quickly, too much romance, over-the-top conspiracy stuff. I liked that religion plays a role in a YA novel since it rarely does but this was terrible.

Zelma Apparently this was named one of the 40 best YA books of all time by Rolling Stone. They do not know YA. 🙄 7y
CocoReads Sounds dreadful. 7y
Megabooks Too bad. I liked it 7y
lynneamch Did you ever read this one? It was a very early Oprah pick. I liked it so much that I kept it to read again. 7y

#backtoreading #anditsaugust #apocalypticread Day 25

Another pair of books 📚 I have on my #tbr and need to get to. I hope they are good. I believe Vivian confronts an apocalypse. Sure sounds like it from the title.

Also, #lavender from the garden.

This came to mind for the #missing prompt. Vivian's parents and many other members of The Church of America go missing one night. It appears they've been lifted straight through holes in their roof. What follows is an amazing journey to find the truth. #maybookflowers #strongYAgirls image from google

Is anyone else worried that if the world ends on Tuesday, you won't finish the book you're reading? What book or books would go unfinished? What book would you read or re-read if you knew the end of the world was 3 days away?

cariashley This is amazing, I've had this thought multiple times and felt like such a weirdo!! I ❤️ Litsy. Anyway I usually think it when I'm reading something I don't love, or when I'm putting off a series ending that I do love but want to save. 8y
she_barks @cariashley ha ha - yes - social media for weirdos 🤖. 8y
Varshitha 😂😂.. This is awesome.. I have multiple books which I am halfway through so I'll probably finish them first.. And I would re-read To Kill a Mockingbird as I have wanted to do it for a while now .. 8y

jpmcwisemorgan If the world ends I'm hitting up the nearest liquor store and grocery store. I'm taking my haul to the nearest library and holing up there until people come to their senses. Oh, and the liquor is because in the new world order we will need something other than cash to make purchases. Yes, I've planned for this. 8y
Laura317 Well, I'm not expecting anything to be different Tuesday. But if I had to choose a book - probably Anne of Green Gables. That would remind me of a sweeter, kinder, and gentler time in the world. 8y
she_barks @jpmcwisemorgan I'm dying! 😂😂😂 If the world ends, expect a #Litsy takeover of all liquor stores and libraries. We'll be the survivors! 8y
Kleonard I'd lose my book on Overdrive! 😂 8y
she_barks @kleonard good point! We'll need a few geniuses that can help make sure Overdrive and Litsy servers stay up. 8y
Amandajoy I just went to the grocery store, I have a case of wine, & a bookshelf full of TBRs. I'm ready! 8y
Posemn Why haven't I thought to prepare for Tuesday?! And, drat! The library AND all of the liquor stores are closed here on Sundays. Guess I need to head to my closest BN later today (since I'm up before dawn with the time change). 😱 8y
minkyb This made my heart sink @she_barks I never thought of Tuesday in this particular way. 8y

Solid, but not amazing. It feels like I wanted a little more of something to make me really love this one, but I can't quite figure out what that something is.

I really liked the premise of this book and the scariness of the church of America. But I didn't like Vivian's story or journey throughout the book. I found it uninteresting and at times not very believable. I wanted to like this one, but it didn't work out.

Fave squad is going to have to go to Vivian and Harp! While the first book is much better than the second, these young woman prove that, with ingenuity and guts, you can survive the apocalypse. #augustphotochallenge #augustofpages

LauraBrook I read the first book last year and loved it! It felt so real, and I loved their friendship. Thanks for the reminder to read the second book, and sooner than later! 8y
Megabooks @LauraBrook The second book is just ok, but I still love those girls! 8y

I liked this one, but I'm not sure it has enough oomph to carry on as a series. I'll give the second one a go if I can get it from the library and see.

Daisey I felt kind of the same way. It was an interesting concept, but too many aspects were left unanswered to keep me really intrigued by the story. Will be curious to see what you think of the sequel. 8y
Megabooks If you didn't like the first one, you probably won't like the second. It pretty much sucked and was predictable. And I loved the first! 8y

Interesting take on the apocalypse. Almost like the author was imagining what the United States would become if all Christians were Westboro Baptist "Christians." Curious to see where it's going.

DitrieMarieBowie That's a terrifying thought. 8y
steph_hashes_tags Traveling woman discovers herself AND the apocalypse? This is so my wheelhouse, definitely going on the high-priority TBR. 8y
Megabooks The first book is excellent, but imagine your own ending instead of reading the sequel! 8y

"People just like to tell themselves stories about where they came from. They can't help themselves. They don't trust the world around them--it's too good for them, or not good enough--so they tell themselves stories about it."

Entertaining YA end of the world journey w/ friends. Important themes.

5🌟 Original YA pre-apocalyptic novel. It's great that everything seems to be set in current timesish, so it's very accessible. The plot moves quickly and with a lot of action! The characters are memorable. The Book of Frick says buy this novel, but make up your own sequel 😉

Megabooks I even bought it ($2.99 on Kindle) but not the second one. 9y

I LOVE the female friendship at the core of this book. It's one of those books I dip back into fairly regularly as some kind of little reassurance.
