Rivers of London - Body Work Vol.1
Rivers of London - Body Work Vol.1: Collected original comic series | Ben Aaronovitch, Andrew Cartmel
22 posts | 30 read | 12 to read
Peter Grant looks look your average London police officer, but he is actually a part-time wizard in a very elite branch of the Metropolitan Police. It's his job to investigate those crimes that regular cops don't like to talk about because they often involve vampires or strange things in Underground tunnels. Peter's latest case features a self-driving killer automobile, a Serbian refugee, the Most Haunted Car in England, a handsome drug dealer with a nice paisley scarf and a seemingly harmless wooden bench with a dark past! Collecting the sell-out smash mini-series, Rivers of London: Body Work!

Thank you @BethM for this interesting Dark magic graphic novel read. While I enjoyed the plot the characters weren‘t really my style? But anyone who enjoys dark noir will like this I think. Kind of read to me like Supernatural. My favorite character is Toby, …and Molly. #lmpbc group g. I will be sending it on to you @phantomx on Monday!

I felt lost a solid 80% of the time. The story seemed relatively light on plot. Maybe you only get it if you‘ve read the novels? Meh for me. #lmpbc

KathyWheeler I do think these are better if you‘ve read the novels. 3y
LibrarianRyan Interesting. I was wondering if they were connected to the novels at all, but didn't look into it. I am still looking forward to it though. 3y

It‘s very interesting reading this series in graphic novel format after having read all the books! But it still has the same vibe and atmosphere of the books which I was thrilled with.

Good. I liked the artwork and the overall story. Except a) if I hadn‘t read at least the first Rivers of London/Peter Grant novel I wouldn‘t have had a clue what was up with all the magic and the Folly and Nightingale and Molly etc etc etc, so definitely not a GN to just pick up and b) the story felt a bit flat after the denouement of Rivers of London. It was a hell of a story. But I‘d like to pick up the next GN, since I do like this world.

“X5. Normally a lovely car...”

This first of four comic book runs that were pubbed between ‘Foxglove Summer‘ and ‘The Hanging Tree‘ features haunted BMWs!

Artwork is great and hews to the novels‘ descriptions. You can also see how DC Sahra Guleed, DI Miriam Stephanopoulos, and PC Peter Grant work *together* (a dynamic that evolves in the GNs to bring the readers to the coherent unit they are in ‘The Hanging Tree‘)

luvamystery65 I'm in the middle of The Hanging Tree right now. Should I stop and read these or read after? 7y
Dogearedcopy @luvamystery65 You‘ve already passed the references to haunted BMWs and black mold, so at this point I would finish reading/listening to ‘The Hanging Tree‘ and then hit the comic trades 1-4. After I finish GN#4, I‘m gong to listen to the novella, ‘The Furthest Station‘ and a short story I found before finishing up the extant cannon with GN#5 🙂 (edited) 7y

‘The Hanging Tree‘ just mentioned “haunted BMWs” from a prior case which perplexed me. I remember a Classic Jag, a Ford Asbo, and a VW bug taxi from earlier novels but nothing about BMWs, haunted or otherwise. It turns out Ben Aaronovitch slipped in a reference to the first Peter Grant graphic novel, ‘Body Work‘!

Definitely putting the 4 Peter Grant gns on my buy list when I go in on Free Comic Book Day 2018 (#5 pubs in June)

I picked up the first volume of this comic to see if I'd be interested in the novels, and it's a pretty interesting premise. I might grab the novel next time I see it somewhere.

The art in this series is fantastic.

Starting the graphic novel version of this series. Love these books.

hlgreenfield I've only read the first one far but I loved it. Didn't know there was a graphic novels version! 7y
RanaElizabeth Ugh, I actually wasted way too much time today trying to figure out if there was a compilation volume for these. I love these books and the world so much I figured I would give it a shot. 7y
melrailey @RanaElizabeth @hlgreenfield I don't know if there's a compilation of all the graphic novels or not. I'm just doing the trade paperbacks. But this first one was good. I love this world. I think I just lack two actual books. 7y

Continuing my obsession with this series, I read all three of these yesterday while waiting for my hold on book 6 to come in. The character design is a bit off for me (why is Peter wearing a suit all the time, and why are all the women tiny-waisted and high-heeled?), but the humor is just right.

Continuing on my obsession with the Rivers of London series with today's #bookhaul. Gonna wait to read these graphic novels for two things: the third to be released later this month (pre-ordered woot woot!) and me finishing the last book currently in the series. Don't want it to end! #riversoflondon #benaaronovitch

elkeOriginal I have the 1st - just need 2 & 3! Thanks for the heads up that one is coming! 7y
brennahawleycraig @elkeo I think it's July 25! I only knew because I decided to go for the first two and was doing some research 😂 7y
elkeOriginal And these graphic novels are totally new stories, right? 7y
brennahawleycraig @elkeo that's what I understood. The only one I couldn't tell for sure on was the first. The others I saw people putting them in between books in terms of timeline. That's why I'm waiting...don't want to ruin Book 6 accidentally. 7y
elkeOriginal That is what I thought/understood too 🤞 7y
