Complete Stories | Edgar Allan Poe
19 posts | 11 read | 2 to read
Edgar Allan Poe's gift for the macabre-his genius in finding the strangeness lurking at the heart of things-was so extraordinary that he exerted a major influence on Baudelaire and French symbolism, on Freudian analysis, and also on the detective novel and the Hollywood movie. His psychologically profound stories of encounters with the marvelous, the uncanny, and the dreadful represent-in contrast to the optimism of writers like Emerson and Whitman-the other, darker side of the nineteenth-century American sensibility. This collection is a pick, even though I averaged only 3/5 among all the stories. It‘s a great introduction to Poe which concludes in his more famous work. The narration is solid and clear. Definitely a Poe fan after reading this collection.

A vain man who refuses to wear his glasses. His name says it all. Because of his vanity, he ends up marrying his great-great-grandmother. Couldn‘t stop laughing at him.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm scrolling through my feed, and seeing this graphic after the defined buttcheeks on your The Tell-Tale Heart post, I'm laughing out loud. 🤣 2mo
GingerAntics @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I did not notice those butt cheeks!!! 🤣😂🤣 That is ridiculously funny to have this right after. 2mo

An ancient Egyptian mummy electrocuted back to life. They spoke to the mummy in Egyptian about all sorts of topics. Explores the idea that not everything was invented by Europeans.

Metaphysics with Poe? Poe‘s visit to the Dead Philosophers Society? The Dead Philosophers Society reads Poe? I don‘t know, this is definitely tied with The Masque of the Red Death. This definitely turns on all the brain cells and gets you thinking.

AlaSkaat I have never read any of his stuff before 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I still can‘t follow you. I would love to learn about the books you read 2mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat I‘ve never read any before last night. Some I love. Some I hate. Some I like. He definitely has a lot of variation. I‘d say definitely get a collection like this so you can explore different writings of his. 2mo
dabbe @TheBookHippie Yes indeedy! 🖤🐦‍⬛🖤 My juniors always loved him the best, too. Wonder why? 😂 2mo
GingerAntics @dabbe he can be gory. He can be dark. He can be mysterious. He can even give a happy ending now and then. He‘s seemingly got something for everyone. 2mo
dabbe @GingerAntics And he knew how to gut-punch us to our very souls. He dared to question everyone's sanity and whether we all feel madness once in a while. He even loved graveyards ... like me. 2mo
Doll8455 My grandfather was a Baptist preacher and he loved for me to read anything by Poe. 2mo
GingerAntics @Doll8455 wow, that‘s shocking. Most of the Baptist kids I knew were never allowed to read Poe. 2mo
Doll8455 My grandfather was open minded and would never put up with “banned books”. 2mo
GingerAntics @Doll8455 so glad the world had a person like him! 🧡🧡🧡 We need more of him. 2mo

Poe‘s version of The Decameron, where the rich revellers are hunted down by the plague and killed. This is justice! Love it. This is my absolute favourite, by far, so far.

GingerAntics @dabbe I love when the plague comes in and is like “nice try rich people!” 🤣😂🤣 2mo
dabbe @GingerAntics Is bad of me to wish something like that now? Hey all you privileged people--wake up call! 😂😂😂 2mo
GingerAntics @dabbe I was kind of hoping for that during COVID, but I‘m down for that now, too. Rich people generally do need a wake up call and a reality check! 2mo

Intriguing look at how people deal with death and loss, and the different ways this managers in people‘s lives. Dramatic ending. Love when “verisimilitude” appears in a story.

A horror read along (forgot the #) and reading House of Leaves with my boyfriend.
2. I‘m not sure honestly. To something far prettier than my current name. I feel like my name is pretty boring 😅
3. This answer changes daily, but right now it‘s Square Hammer by Ghost.

I joined a book club. (After 8 months in a new city, it's probably time to make some friends.🤷)
My first meeting is tomorrow night when we'll discuss 5 stories by Poe. 🦇🕷️
So tonight I'm playing catch-up.
Tommorow, I will be a bit nervous. 😬

krismlars It‘s hard to make new friends, I‘m in the same boat. Have fun! 8y
mcipher Have fun! Book Club means at least you'll have one important thing in common right off the bat, even though it's scary. Plus there's always chocolate and/or wine. 👍 8y
batsy Good luck and hope you have fun! And it's Poe! Wine is always a friend during these things 😁 8y

BarbaraBB How brave of you! Do you like these short stories? I didn‘t, which would have made me extra nervous 😉 8y
merelybookish @krismlars Thanks! It does seem to take more effort as you get older. 8y
merelybookish @mcipher @batsy We meet at Whole Foods so maybe 🍫🍫but no 🍷🍷. 🙄 8y
merelybookish @JacqMac Thanks! I'm hopeful! (Just sometimes my introverted side kicks in.) 🙂 8y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Thanks! I think I'm more desperate than brave. I do miss having girlfriends! ☺️ I'm okay with Poe. Mostly I like the ornate 19th c. language and he does create a good unreliable narrator. But I don't care much about the plots. 8y
BarbaraBB Having some girlfriends makes life better, I agree. A book club seems perfect to find them. I hope you have a great evening! 8y
Tamra Good for you! I bet it will be fun. 👍🏾 8y
mydearwatson I love Poe! Have a great time! 8y
