Murder at the Mayfair Hotel
Murder at the Mayfair Hotel: A Cozy Historical Mystery Book | C.J. Archer
9 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
It was the most fashionable place to stay in London, until murder made a reservation. Solve the puzzle in this new cozy historical mystery from USA Today bestselling author of the Glass and Steele series. December 1899. After the death of her beloved grandmother, Cleopatra Fox moves into the luxury hotel owned by her estranged uncle in the hopes of putting hardship and loneliness behind her. But the poisoning of a guest throws her new life, and the hotel, into chaos. Cleo quickly realizes no one can be trusted, not Scotland Yard and especially not the hotels charming assistant manager. With the New Years Eve ball approaching fast and the hotels reputation hanging by a thread, Cleo must find the killer before the ball, and the hotel itself, are ruined. But catching a murderer proves just as difficult as navigating the hotels hierarchy and the peculiarities of her family. Can Cleo find the killer before the new century begins? Or will someone get away with murder?

There were many aspects of this book i did not love- TBH Cleo and many of her decisions annoyed me. But i enjoyed it enough to give the second book a chance.

I‘m a big C.J. Archer fan and really got into this first book in this series. Definitely different from her other series but it has a great cast of characters.

My sister started reading this series and decided I had to read them, too, so she would have someone to talk to about them 😂 A soft pick for me, some things didn't quite hang together, but overall I liked Cleo and thought this was a decent start to a series - my sister already finished book 2, so apparently I'll be reading that one soon!!

#WickedWords - Invitation @AsYouWish - I don't know if I've ever finished all five in the right month before!!! 😂

Andrew65 Looks a great series. Well done 🥳 1y
IndoorDame I went on a binge of downloading a bunch of the free offerings in iBooks this morning (usually series starts) and this was one of them along with several other “golden age” detective/cozies. I‘m excited to have so many new options just waiting for me! 1y

mabell I saw the audio for this in hoopla, but it didn‘t grab me from the description. I‘m interested to see what you think of the series! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @IndoorDame - That's how they got my sister hooked 😂 1y
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - This first one was definitely a little slow in spots. I was reading other things as well so it didn't bother me as much, but there were some pacing issues. Since my sister owns the books, we're writing in the like we do for #LMPBC so that adds to the fun 😂 1y
IndoorDame @TheAromaofBooks that‘s always the way 🤣 1y
mabell That would make it more fun! I listen to cozies as I work (generally they can be a good balance of diverting, but not too distracting), so I‘m always on the lookout for a new one! 1y
PuddleJumper Yay! 1y
AsYouWish Yay!!! Good job!!!!💙💙💙💙 1y
rubyslippersreads I just read this for my IRL book club. I agree with you about the pacing. I wonder if Mr. Armitage is supposed to make the reader think of Richard Armitage? 😍😄 14mo
TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads - Ooooo could be!!! 😁 14mo

I finished listening to this cozy mystery on my walk today. It had enough twists to keep me guessing about the culprit to the end. I liked Cleo Fox and the other characters so this is a series I'll be continuing. 1st book done for #AwesomeAugust @Andrew65

Cleo had her annoying moments, but mostly an enjoyable read and the mysteries were fun and engaging. I‘m hoping she‘ll soften as the books continue and be less likely to allow her imagination to cause her to leap to conclusions.

The tagged was a fun romp. This was an #audiolisten Enjoyed the narrator and the adventures of Miss Fox. She learned a hard but valuable lesson about jumping to conclusions. Real people paid dearly for her errors, but she felt remorseful and did her best to make amends. Looking forward to book 2 :-)

Seven Kinds of Hell had potential, but way too many coincidences. So-So.

By the Book ended up feeling dated and flat. Bailed.

#CurrentlyListening to this first in the #CleopatraFox #cozymystery series — it has been good until about 2/3 of the way in when one of my pet peeve tropes reared its ugly head: the protagonist jumps to conclusions based on very faulty assumptions. Sigh. Hope this recovers ASAP.

UPDATE: Reader, it did. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
