Join the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow as they journey across the fantastic magical Land of Oz in search of the Tin Woodman's long-lost sweetheart. In a series of adventures sure to thrill Oz fans both old and new, these beloved friends face such challenges as a selfish giantess and a group of quarrelsome dragons--all to fulfill a promise made long ago to a beautiful Munchkin girl. The Tin Woodman sits on the glittering tin throne of his splendid tin castle, ruling the Winkle Country of the Land of Oz with the help of his best friend, the Scarecrow. All is peaceful and well, but when a young wanderer named Woot asks the Tin Woodman how he came to be made of tin, the emperor recalls his days as a flesh-and-blood woodchopper and his love for Nimmie Amee, a Munchkin girl so fair that the sunsets blushed when they fell upon her. The three quickly decide to set out on a daring quest to reunite the Tin Woodman with his lost love and ask Nimmie Amee to be Empress of the Winkie Country. During their travels, they battle dragons and loons, a mighty sorceress, and an all-too-hungry beast called the Hippo-gy-raf. Luckily, they are joined in their search by their old friend Polychrome, the Rainbow's Daughter, and are aided by Dorothy and Princess Ozma--the powerful fairy ruler of the Land of Oz. But just when they think their troubles are over and their quest is complete, they discover a surprise that leaves all of them truly astounded! This deluxe edition of the rare first edition features all twelve of Oz artist John R. Neill's beautiful color plates, along with his nearly one hundred black-and-white drawings, making this a book sure to be treasured for years to come. The Tin Man remembers the girl he promised to marry & goes on a quest to find her. W/ the Scarecrow, a boy named Woot, & an enchanted Polychrome, they‘ll face many weird & wonderful things in Oz.

I love the buddy road trip & the friendship, but I forgot that this is the book that introduces the fact that nobody ever changes or dies in Oz. Babies stay babies, the old stay old, & your chopped up body parts remain alive independent of you.🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

AlaMich That last one is ICK! 3mo
BookmarkTavern @AlaMich Yeah! I had completely forgotten what happened with the parts of the Tin Man and the Tin Soldier. I had to put the book down for a bit. 😅 3mo

rubyslippersreads I‘m certainly glad they left the Tin Man‘s “creation story” out of the 1939 movie. Of course, we‘ll get another version in Wicked: For Good. 3mo
BookmarkTavern @rubyslippersreads it‘s a really disturbing backstory any time you stop to really think about it. I‘m looking forward to seeing how the movie interprets the musical. 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly Huh, I didn‘t see this book as introducing the fact that no one ever dies, more clarifying how it works in practice! I had wondered how there could be kids and old people and everything in between, and now that part makes more sense. The body parts aspect is very weird, though. 3mo
BookmarkTavern @Clare-Dragonfly I know it isn‘t the first to say no one dies in Oz, but it‘s the first time that I really understood how it applied to body parts. Which, now that I think about it, Langwidere showed up several books ago, so I probably should have had this realization then. 😂😂 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly @BookmarkTavern I was thinking about her and her heads but she‘s not technically in Oz, right? And I don‘t recall any of her heads being animated on their own… 3mo
BookmarkTavern @Clare-Dragonfly Right! She‘s in Ev! And I think you‘re right they‘re not animated until she puts them on. This is such a weird series. 🤣🤣 3mo

Somebody points out to the Tin Man that he never reconnected with the girl whose love caused him to be chopped up and turned to tin. Time for an adventure! The usual random bizarre assortment of creatures and places await. I appreciated Baum explaining a bit of the history of Oz becoming a fairyland where no one dies, though as a mom I‘m horrified at the prospect of babies staying babies forever. Then again, if they can‘t die, maybe not so bad?

BookmarkTavern Yeah, I had forgotten that part too! 😅 3mo

#2023Book19
I‘ve always been a sucker for a “buddy road trip” comedy, so I quite enjoyed this one. I also liked that it was set up to be a potential romance but then took a hard left turn away from that and was mostly about friendship.

Okay, get this:

Someone points out to the Tin Woodman that maybe he should check on that woman that he loved that was the slave of the witch that cursed his axe to chop him up and he‘s like “Sure, whatevs.” On his quest he meets a Tin Soldier who fell for the SAME WOMAN and who was chopped up by his own sword.

Long story short, they find her but she‘s ALREADY MARRIED TO A MAN MADE OF A COMPOSITE OF THEIR BODY PARTS HELD TOGETHER BY “MEAT GLUE”!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Only two more to go in my Great and Powerful #OzReread! 8y
DrexEdit Oz is a strange and wondrous place! 😁 8y
xicanti Sometimes people who've read WICKED come to me all, "Wow, Maguire made Oz so twisted." And I'm like, "Yeah, Baum's books go to some dark places too. They just smile while they do it." 8y

To get over a deep ravine, the Scarecrow allows the long-necked Hip-po-gy-raf to EAT THE STRAW OUT OF HIS BODY so that it will lift him and his friends across. He is essentially a sentient sack for awhile until they can refill him.

Have I mentioned that Oz is a weird place? #OzReread

saresmoore Haha! That IS weird! 8y

Here‘s the Tin Woodman talking to his former head. Like the head when he was a meat person. Which is still fully sentient (and a little rude because he is not connected to a heart either) and sitting in a cupboard of Ku-Klip the tinsmith who built his tin body.

Oz is a weird place, man. #OzReread

UrsulaMonarch 😂😂😂 what a good idea for a reread! 8y
LibrarianRyan I'm trying to convince my library to do an Oz summer theme. Since we are a speciality gov lib I'm having some trouble. However we have original copies of the Oz books that I would love to show off. They are on display but not a good display. I'll try to take a pic next week. 8y

When every book is so packed full of oddity it‘s hard to name a winner, but Book 12 is shaping up to be the weirdest Oz book yet.

You see the TW started out as a woodcutter who fell in love with the Wicked Witch of the East‘s servant girl. The WWotE enchanted his axe to chop off his body parts, so he replaced everything he lost with tin, finally replacing his head.

But the head was kept by the tinsmith in a cupboard and it still works!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk His arms and legs and stuff were still in a barrel out back too. #OzReread (edited) 8y
DeborahSmall I‘m going to have to read all the Oz stories. Only ever read first couple as a kid 8y
CatLass007 I‘ve only read the original Oz book but I may have to invest in a few more, especially this one. 8y

Bradleygirl The Oz books were my absolute favorite in childhood! And reading as an adult, yes you have to wonder if Baum was more than a little high at times. 8y
rubyslippersreads I haven't reread these since I was a kid. Maybe I'll just stick with the MGM version. 😄🌈 8y
