The Emerald City of Oz | L. Frank Baum
post image

Haven't a clue what's going on in that picture, but I had to use it.

I saw the #BeyondTheYellowBrickRoad group reading this & was surprised I couldn't place it in my memory. I've definitely read it multiple times but I think it must be one I didn't go back to as an adult. Not hard to see why... Dorothy and Ozma are both kind of obnoxious in this one and I feel bad for Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Still lot of fun to be had though.

W/ the bank ready to foreclose the farm, Dorothy decides to plead to Ozma to let Uncle Henry & Aunt Em move to Oz. At the same time, the Nome King has decided to invade Oz.

A much more solid plot. Nome recruitment & war planning alternates w/ Dorothy showing new places of Oz to her family. There‘s also a huge increase in puns 😆. The ending was a little disappointing, but I‘m also no longer the real target audience for Ozma‘s speech.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

The Road to Oz | L. Frank Baum

I read another Oz book today. Gathering these stories into collections like this one makes sense because they're so fast-paced (and sort of...pointless?). There was an especially fun cameo appearance by a non-Baum magical being, and the book ends with Dorothy still in Oz, which is different. #beyondtheyellowbrickroad

Dorothy again finds herself traveling through fairy lands & meets a variety of characters on her way to Princess Ozma‘s birthday party.

Baum has such a way with creating unique, beautifully absurd characters. We get to meet Polychrome, Button Bright, & the Shaggy Man! & one of my favorites Johnny Dooit. Button Bright may be silly, but it strikes me that if more people were willing to admit they didn‘t know something, we‘d be better off.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Soscha I‘m trying to remember how far I‘ve read in the Oz odyssey. Into Ruth Plumly Thompson‘s Famous Forty. It‘s an ongoing series really, the OZ foundation ppl or similar name, canonizing further books. (edited) 1mo
BookmarkTavern @Soscha I‘ve only read one or two of Thompson‘s, so I‘ve been debating continuing through. But you‘re right, it is ongoing! The most recent book recognized by Baum‘s estate according to Wikipedia was published in 2014! (edited) 1mo
willaful @BookmarkTavern quite a few of the characters at the birthday party have their own Baum stories. 1mo

My favorite part of this one was Eureka the kitten, but she did make me wonder why Toto didn't talk. I thought it was hilarious that Dorothy meets up with the wizard and they don't catch up on what's happened since they last saw each other until they've escaped death, what? 3 times? #BeyondtheYellowBrickRoad

BookmarkTavern Eureka is so fun. She‘s just a little chaos kitten, trying to create drama. 😂 2mo

Dorothy‘s visit to San Francisco is interrupted by an earthquake, where she falls into the earth. There, with her cousin Zeb, she meets up w/ the Wizard again through many adventures.

The way Baum writes animals suddenly realizing they can talk is always so funny to me. This 1 is very disjointed, w/ almost every chapter being a separate, contained adventure. I did love the fantastical elements of the lands under the Earth. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

BarkingMadRead I still have to read this! I may read it next month along with the next one! 2mo

Very fun and silly story! It reminded me of a couple of the Narnia books—I wonder if Lewis had read it. Dorothy, the Wizard, a boy named Zeb, a horse named Jim, and a kitten named Eureka travel through many lands under the earth, each dangerous in its own whimsical way. The Wizard is kind of a badass in this book. It irritated me that it took Dorothy so long to come up with her solution. But at least her speech didn‘t have so many apostrophes.

I got behind last month on #BeyondTheYellowBrickRoad but I‘m loving these books. I‘m a big fan of Return To Oz & this was such a fun read. As always the books & movie are slightly different but I love Billina & Tik-Tok. Billina especially cracks me up! Looking forward to reading the rest of the series. And as always, I‘m struck by the creativity of these books, especially considering the time period they were written. 5⭐️🐓🐓🥚
