Oh, Canada! | Per-Henrik Grth

Repost for - @Jess861

I hope everyone who has had a chance to start is enjoying Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese!
For our next read, I thought we could pick from two Lori Lansens books. I feel she is a less known Canadian author. These are two of my favourite books by her. Please feel free to look up each book and vote (if you want) on the one you'd like to read.

I hope everyone who has had a chance to start is enjoying Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese! Just over a month to go and I will post a couple of discussion points on the book.

kwmg40 I‘m enjoying my reread of Indian Horse and look forward to the discussion. I‘ll vote for 6d
Tamra I am going to sit the next round out only because I am committed to other reads. I‘ll watch for the upcoming selections. Too many books, too little time! 😆 6d

Kitta I enjoyed Indian Horse! Voting for 6d
Jess861 @Kitta Thanks for the vote - noted! 6d
Ruthiella I‘m so glad for the introduction to Richard Wagamese and look forward to the discussion. Very excited to discover more CanLit! Either Lansens‘ title works for me. My library has both. 👍 6d
lauraisntwilder Oh, wow, those sound so different! I guess I'll vote for The Girls, but either one would be fine with me. 6d
LeahBergen The Girls is so good. 👍 6d
Jess861 @lauraisntwilder That's one of the things I appreciate about her. All her books are so different but they're all just as good as the last one. 4d
Jess861 @Ruthiella Sounds good!! 4d
Jess861 @LeahBergen I know...such a neat concept for a book. 4d
CarolynM My copy of Indian Horse only arrived last week. I‘ll get to it soon. I‘m happy with whatever you choose for the next read🙂 3d

5⭐️ Wagamese so effectively captures the heart wrenching destructive trauma of the Indian boarding school policy.

I knew I was going to like this because I enjoyed Medicine Walk. Deft writer! Lyrical and sensitive despite the subject matter.

@Jess861

Ruthiella Nice review. A little too much hockey for me personally, but yes, excellent writing. 6d
Tamra @Ruthiella the hockey section is a bit too long and seemed an odd tangent for that reason, but I can forgive in this case. (edited) 6d
Jess861 So glad you enjoyed it - such an important topic in Canada! I love the cover on the copy you have! 6d

Tamra @Jess861 I‘m happy the opportunity gave me the incentive to finally get to it. I now realize I also have Ragged Company still on my shelves! (edited) 6d
Jess861 @Tamra He really is a phenomenal author - and he had such a hard life! We are so lucky he found his way to writing. 6d

📕Continuing with Indian Horse for #OhCanada .

📗Started Sugar Street based on @Lesliereadsalot ‘s intriguing review.

📘The Best of All Possible Worlds is my last #Roll100 for January and I don‘t like it at all.

📙Continuing on with Lark Rise a chapter a day for #HashtagBrigade

ChaoticMissAdventures I read Indian Horse last year and really enjoyed it. He is such a talented storyteller. I also didn't like Possible Worlds, which is such a bummer I really like Karen Lord in interviews, and the premise sounds interesting but I just couldn't get thorough it, and I tried 3 or 4 different times. 2w
Cathythoughts Oh no , to the tagged book! I‘m stacking to see what I think. 🤔 (edited) 2w
Ruthiella @ChaoticMissAdventures The writing in Indian Horse keeps the pages turning, despite the heavy subject matter, which I appreciate. Yeah, Karen Lord is so beloved, but alas her style is for me. 2w

Ruthiella @Cathythoughts Our dearly departed mutual friend Jenny @ReadingEnvy gave it 5⭐️ on Goodreads, so I had high hopes. But it‘s just not my cuppa. More romance than SciFi IMO with no real plot. 2w
Cathythoughts Ok. Good information 👍🏻 It‘s lovely to remember Jenny ♥️💔 2w
Suet624 WHY can I never remember to read a Richard Wagamese story? Grrr…. 2w
Ruthiella @Suet624 So many books, so little time! 2w
Lesliereadsalot Looking forward to your thoughts! 2w
BiblioLitten @Ruthiella The book is devastating and hopeful at the same time. 1w
Ruthiella @BiblioLitten A tricky balance! But I think he managed it. 1w

#WhereAreYouMonday

I find myself in Canada today. I‘ve just started the inaugural #OhCanada read. New author for me and the first couple chapters are promising, though I know it‘s also going to make me sad.

Prairiegirl_reading Richard Wagamese is one of my favourite authors! I have not read this one but I‘ve read a number of his others and I think I‘ve rated them all 5 stars. I hope you enjoy it. And yes have the tissues ready. 3w
Ruthiella @Prairiegirl_reading Thanks for the heads up on the tissues! I will try to prepare myself. 3w
BiblioLitten I‘m starting this too! I was in Kamchatka Peninsula and am just about to start Wagamese! 3w

BiblioLitten @Prairiegirl_reading I‘m starting Indian Horse too, but I really loved Keeper n Me by the same author. 3w
Tamra Sooooo good! I have a special fondness for indigenous writers & writing. 3w
Ruthiella @Tamra Good to hear! 3w
Prairiegirl_reading @BiblioLitten I loved keeper ‘n me too! Ragged company, Dream Wheels, Medicine Walk all excellent. Richard Wagamese is just great with character and place. 3w
CarolynM I‘m looking forward to getting started on this one 3w
Ruthiella @CarolynM I have a very good feeling about it based on the first few chapters. 3w

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished this for #ohcanada a few days ago and forgot to update.

Amazing book looking into the effects and horrors of residential schools and treatment of #indigenous Canadians. Told as the story of a young boy, Saul Indian Horse, as he grows up.

Really interesting insight. Be prepared if you don‘t understand hockey to read a lot about it. I think it would be fine if you don‘t know a lot but as a fan this was a bonus for me.

#canada

Jess861 I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! Definitely an important but dark part of Canadian history. 4w

Help a Litten out! I'm wanting to get back into reading challenges this year but I'm having a hard time figuring out what Litsy is hosting these days. It looks like a few I used to do aren't active anymore. Are there any I should know about? (I'm planning to do #bookspin with @TheAromaofBooks and #agathachristieclubR3 with @Librarybelle, of course!)

Picture of my dog's dumb teeth for tax!

TheAromaofBooks I'm participating in - #Pantone2025 and #FourFoursin25 with @lauredhel
- #WickedWords with @AsYouWish
- #Roll100 and #GottaCatchEmAll with @PuddleJumper
- #FictionalTraveler and #ReadorDonate with @julieclair
and my own other challenges, #ISpyBingo and #BookChain

Have you checked @LitsyEvents ? That account does a great job reposting all kinds of shenanigans!!
1mo
Ruthiella You can follow @LitsyEvents for reposts of all the challenges, etc. Good luck! 😃 1mo
AmyG There is #authoramonth @soubhiville where one reads 1+ books from that specific author for the month. #TBRTarot is where a card is chosen and you pick a corresponding book. #readyourkindle is like Bookspin but just for ereaders. Last two are with @Cbee (edited) 1mo
