Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting
Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting | KJ Charles
19 posts | 11 read | 9 to read
Robin Loxleigh and his sister Marianne are the hit of the Season, so attractive and delightful that nobody looks behind their pretty faces.Until Robin sets his sights on Sir John Hartlebury's heiress niece. The notoriously graceless baronet isn't impressed by good looks, or fooled by false charm. He's sure Robin is a liar-a fortune hunter, a card sharp, and a heartless, greedy fraud-and he'll protect his niece, whatever it takes. Then, just when Hart thinks he has Robin at his mercy, things take a sharp left turn. And as the grumpy baronet and the glib fortune hunter start to understand each other, they also find themselves starting to care-more than either of them thought possible. But Robin's cheated and lied and let people down for money. Can a professional rogue earn an honest happy ever after?

A very nice read about young society Ladies at soirées which were trying to get selected for marriage by gentlemen. To add intrigue there was a brother and sister team plying their trade as fortune hunters. Without warning the book plunges the reader into graphic non hetrosexual sex encounters. The story itself was so good with funny, sensual and sad moments along with enduring friendships, the graphic sex didn't really enhance this lovely book.

Mehso-so

I wish I could find similar books written by men. I liked the setting and I guess the premise, though it is a bit tired of a trope at this point.
It is a quick read, all good things but I just don't feel the characters. There was sex and they say they like each other but I didn't see a lot to like. The story was a bit too predictable and I just felt a bit underwhelmed.

I can't decide if I like this book but this line has me cracking up ?

I was doing a bunch of simple data entry today while in office (I work from home most days but had in person meetings today), & I though what a great time to listen to an audio book. Not long in the sex started, & I don't know if I am one who can listen to sex scenes in public! I spent most of the time a bit freaked that the headphones would randomly stop working and my phone would take over 😂
And of course HR walked by me during this time!

CoverToCoverGirl Lol.. 🤭 1y
kaysworld1 When I read a spicy book in public I am always looking over the top of the book to see if anyone is watching me 👀 1y

#fourfoursin22 alternating (alternating povs) @Lauredhel
2nd #roll100 done for April

Loved this one! (have I read a KJ Charles that I haven't loved?) great m/m historical romance.

shanaqui I think the closest to one I didn't like was Jackdaw, and even that had aspects I enjoyed... 3y
CarolynM She's really good💖 3y
llwheeler @shanaqui I haven't read Jackdaw yet, though I hope to get to it someday 3y

#roll100 picks for next month! I'm intrigued by the 3 rolls, gonna try picking 2 and using the 3rd as a stretch goal/bonus.

49 - Thanks for Listening, a short story collection I got cause I needed one story from it for a course I took. Glad for the push to read the rest of it.
100 - The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting, my newest ebook acquisition and one I was gonna dive into asap anyway!
3rd in comment ⬇️

Thanks @PuddleJumper 😊

llwheeler 85 is Gulliver's Travels, which I'm leaving as a stretch goal cause I still haven't read The Moonstone (one of my Feb picks) so that'll be the next classic I pick up. And I might not even get to it in April, let alone two classics... 3y
PuddleJumper Sounds like a great idea! Good luck! 3y

Sometimes you need a little #romantsy 💕
This is a great historical M/M romance by KJ Charles whose fantasy romances I love. I like that Charles undoes some old tropes and has characters learn a little about social injustice or privilege along the way - without getting preachy. And of course there‘s some heat to this! 🔥🔥
@CarolynM thanks for putting this on my radar!

Lucy_Anywhere The Will Darling series by KJ Charles is also lovely! 3y
CarolynM Glad you enjoyed🙂 I agree with @Lucy_Anywhere The Will Darling Adventures are lots of fun. 3y

Thanks for a great month of #NewYearWhoDis !

I completed 4 books (bailed on 1 😬) and am planning to read 2 in February! I had already read 2 on the list, and will hopefully read Witness of the Dead and Know My Name at some point!

Most of these books I would have never picked up without this yearly reading challenge.

I LOVED this book! This might be my first M/M historical romance. At least none other come to mind. I really enjoyed this one. I loved Robin, Marianne, Hart and Anne! I really loved all the characters and the story. It was fun, funny, but also raised some interesting points about birth, etc.

It definitely would never have been on my radar if it wasn‘t for #NYWD

As ever with K.J. Charles, this was so much fun. It has more in common with Band Sinister than most of her other books, and the nice thing about K.J. Charles is that you can trust that her characters communicate properly (at least as far as their needs and dislikes go).

Started this book today. Robin is obsessed with Hart's thighs from the beginning.☺️

I didn‘t really have time to binge-read this yesterday, but I did it anyway because KJ Charles gave me no choice. She bombarded me with sibling bonds, card games, math, Robin Hood nostalgia*, pairings with chemistry up the wazoo, and her phenomenal ability to dig deep into how people in a class-obsessed society navigate love across class lines. I loved every second of it.

5 stars

*be aware it‘s not a retelling so much as a loose homage

CarolynM I loved it too💕 4y

It‘s book & beer o‘clock! I dunno if I‘ll be able to finish THE GENTLE ART OF FORTUNE HUNTING tonight, but I‘ve carved out time for a solid binge. The book remains awesome. KJ Charles is so damned good.

I figured it was about time I tried Driftwood Brewing Co‘s signature IPA, too. Like most IPAs, I found it too hoppy at first gulp but the more of it I drink, the better I like it. Funny how that works.

Delightful M/M regency #romantsy. K.J. Charles never disappoints.

Breakfast with KJ Charles. I do wish her book formatter would put the cover image at the start of each book. It‘d make it so much easier to do social media posts where I gush about how much I‘m enjoying the the thing.

And y‘all, this queer Regency sorta-kinda Robin Hood retelling is awesome so far! I wish I had the time to binge read it as it deserves.
