Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade
Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade | Diana Gabaldon
From the exquisitely talented and award-winning author of the Outlander Saga come two additions to the oeuvre, both featuring Lord John Grey. This dashing character first appeared in Gabaldons blockbuster, Voyager, and readers cheered him on in the New York Times bestselling Lord John and the Private Matter.Diana Gabaldon takes readers back to eighteenth-century Britain as Lord John Grey pursues a deadly family secret as well as a clandestine love affair, set against the background of the Seven Years War.Seventeen years earlier, Greys father, the Duke of Pardloe, shot himself, days before he was to be accused of being a Jacobite traitor. By raising a regiment to fight at Culloden, Greys elder brother has succeeded in redeeming the family name, aided by Grey, now a major in that regiment. But now, on the eve of the regiments move to Germany, comes a mysterious threat that throws the matter of the Dukes death into stark new question, and brings the Grey brothers into fresh conflict with the past and each other. From barracks and parade grounds to the battlefields of Prussia and the stony fells of the Lake District, Lord Johns struggle to find the truth leads him through danger and passion, ever deeper, toward the answer to the question at the centre of his soulwhat is it that is most important to a man? Love, loyalty, family name? Self-respect, or honesty? Surviving both the battle of Krefeld and a searing personal betrayal, he returns to the Lake District to find the man who may hold the key to his quest: a Jacobite prisoner named Jamie Fraser. Here, Grey finds his truth and faces a final choice: between honour and life itself. From the Hardcover edition.

A page from a missing volume of his father's journals turns up, and Lord John starts to find anomalies in the accepted version of his father's death nearly 20 years previously.

Some definite retconning going on here, but still a good yarn.

I started the day with 3 books in progress. Pandemic party animal that I am, I will finish them all by midnight.

First done, the second book of the Lord John series, which was a perfect pleasure listen: Gabaldon‘s great writing, a fun mystery with a dash of sexy times, an excellent narrator, my favorite redcoat, and a few glimpses of Jamie Freaking Fraser.

Ugly audio cover, so enjoy this photo of perfectly cast David Berry instead.😍

sprainedbrain Omg this was also my #DoubleSpin for December! Finally! @TheAromaofBooks 3y
Scochrane26 I like the Lord John series, too. The Scottish Prisoner has lots of Jamie, if you haven‘t gotten to that one yet. 3y
CarolynM Shh! Don't tell anyone, but I like the Lord John books a lot more than Outlander😆 3y

sprainedbrain @CarolynM I can understand that! They are fantastic books all by themselves, but I do love Claire, so... not sure I can count out the Outlander books. 😉 3y
sprainedbrain @Scochrane26 I have had them all for years but I‘m making my way slowly through, reading them when I start jonesing for Outlander world. I think Scottish Prisoner is next for me! 😍 3y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 3y
inthegreensandblues I love LJG too.❤️ Scottish Prisoner is my last story left to read and have been sitting on it for years, probably bc I know I'll be out of new material then. 😂 But have looked at it a few times lately and thought of going for it... 3y

“To the best of Lord John Grey‘s knowledge, stepmothers in fiction tended to be venal, evil, cunning, homicidal, and occasionally cannibalistic.”

Gotta love Diana Gabaldon 🤣

I began the series in 2014, in time to watch the new STARZ series. I've read all of the Outlander series and all of the Lord John Grey series. If you enjoy historical fiction, time travel, and tremendous storytelling, check out these books.

While I'm enjoying this audio book, I don't know how I feel about any other narrator besides Davina Porter being book Jamie. This "Jamie" sounds more like Dougal.
