5 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
She was admired by women and desired by men, until jealousy and past secrets took center stage. Help Cleo and her friends solve the murder of one of London's leading actresses. When a hotel guest's mistress is found dead in the stalls of the Piccadilly Playhouse, a verdict of suicide is given. Convinced his lover didn't kill herself, Lord Rumford wants the truth uncovered. Against his better judgement, he hires Cleo Fox to find the murderer. Cleo needs to solve this case if she wants to make a living from being a private detective. But she quickly learns that the truth is buried beneath years of secrets; secrets that powerful people want desperately to keep. With the help of her friends from the Mayfair Hotel, Cleo exposes the bitter rivalry and jealousy of London's West End. But can she find the killer before the final curtain closes on the Playhouse?

If you like protagonists who are selfish in the sense that they want to do what they want to do, without thinking of how it‘ll affect others, this is for you. I know she wasn‘t purposely being obtuse about what might happen, but all the same. If not for that, this would be quite fun. Unfortunately, I can‘t stand Cleo and, imo, she‘s just gotten worse in this second book.

BookishMarginalia I agree with you — Cleo has gone backwards instead of forward. 3y
Preciouz29 @BookishMarginalia yes! I‘m all for mixing of classes and women being able to do more, but she just keeps jumping to conclusions! And, whenever she realises she did something wrong, she just says to herself, “well I didn‘t mean it!” 3y

Cleo befriended the help at the hotel and they‘re helping her solve another murder. This one involves finding out who killed the mistress of a hotel guest. But her rich relatives have decided to introduce her to “the right people” in the hopes of getting her married off. Enjoy Cleo‘s earnest attempts to be a regular person, when the rules of society offer few options for women in her situation.

UPDATE: This was okay… it dragged a bit for me. I‘ll probably pick up the next one when it is published, but that‘s about it. 🤷🏻‍♀️
