In Search of Wales | H. V. Morton
4 posts | 1 reading | 2 to read
A book by H. V. Morton is more than a travel book: it is a sensitive interpretation of a country's people and their history. The success of his first book on England, established the popularity of something new and refreshing in this type of literature. Mr Morton's travels have gained him thousands of readers in all parts of the world. The author has frequently been requested to define the secret of writing a travel book. He always replies: 'There is no secret. You either enjoy yourself or you do not. If you do, say so; if you do not - say so!' This disarming sincerity is, perhaps, responsible for the charm and fascination of his books. The feel and smell of the countryside, also a sense of movement, find their way into these light-hearted wanderings, and, combined with humour, acute observation, sympathy and an engaging curiosity, have justly gained for them a wide and increasing popularity. Contents Include: I Go in Search of Wales, Find My Way to the Border Marches, Stand on the Battlements of Ludlow Castle - In Which I go to Llangollen, Hear About the Old Ladies and Visit the Hunting Lodge of a Welsh Prince - How I leave Llangollen - I Visit the Cathedral of St. Asaph and the Castle of Rhuddlan - Tells How I went to Bangor - I Explore the Green Isle of Anglesey - In Which I Visit St. Beuno's Church, Explore the 'Land's End' of Wales, See Criccieth - Visit the Grave of Gelert - In Which I Fail to Climb Snowdon in a Train but Succeed on My Feet - I Go to Bala - Welsh Train all the Way to Cardigan - In Which In Enter Black Wales at Llanelly - I Admire Cardiff

TheSpineView No complaints not that anyone wants to hear! Lol!🤣🤣🤣 Seriously, busy at work for the first half then slow the later part. I left early to go by the post office. Kind of normal day. 4y
Itchyfeetreader Taking a sneaky day off tomorrow and feeling v grateful for@opportunity to do so! 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Sounds positive 👍😊 (edited) 4y
Andrew65 @CocoReads Enjoy Friday. 4y
Andrew65 @TheSpineView Normal is so good these days! 4y
Andrew65 @Itchyfeetreader Enjoy the day. 4y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 women inventors 💜✊🏼 4y
Velvetfur It was my parents' anniversary today (53 years) so I popped round to see them and give them flowers and chocs! A box of posh Godiva ones and a box of a new flavour of Lindt truffles (salted caramel) 😁 Our 'little old lady' cat was being very cute and entertaining, but all her loose hairs were flying round and my throat got really irritated so I had to leave ☹️ 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Great that the curriculum is focusing on them, I saw your posts today. 😍 4y
Velvetfur How has today been for you Andrew? All well with you? 🙂 4y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur That‘s fantastic (the anniversary not the cat 🥺), congratulations to them 🍾🥂🥳 The cat in the other hand! 😫 4y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur Overall very restive day, which is good because still very tired! Still a few soreness issues with arm but seems to be continuing to improve. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Today's travel look lovely. Hot outside but the air conditioning works just fine inside while I worked from home. My boss called to check in with me. He submitted my numbers for 1st & 2nd quarters because I am eligible for a bonus and it sounds like the company is paying them out eventually! Woot woot!! He also signed how soon before I'll feel comfortable flying to San Antonio. I told him we'll revisit that when he actually needs me down there. 4y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 I was complaining and they said well make one 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️ see what happened there .. plus I was finding things and re-asked and they said do it. (edited) 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Sounds fantastic, even better they let you run with it! 4y
Andrew65 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick That sounds great and fully deserved. 👏👏👏 Yes too soon for flying. 4y
tracey38 Today was steady at work. My mom had a better day as she was able to go home. But yesterday they found two aneurysms and on is close to her heart and lung. The cardiologists/vascular surgeons are reviewing her case to decide if it needs surgery. Very scary to me. But mom is happy to be home and is able to rest more. 4y
tracey38 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick oh, yay for raises! Our hospital already told us no raises this year, which sucks since we've all worked this whole time as essential workers. I hope you get a good one! 4y
Velvetfur @Andrew65 Thank you! 😁 Yeah it's upsetting about our puddy tat as I love cuddling her ☹️ I'm glad you got some rest today! Sorry to hear about the arm though ☹️ 4y
Velvetfur @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yay for you getting your bonus!! 👏🏻 @tracey38 that's so unfair, I hate companies and they way they treat people 😡 4y
Velvetfur @tracey38 I'm glad your Mum has come home! I'm sure she feels much better there 🙂 That is scary about the aneurysms but at least the hospital are onto it and can do something about it, fingers crossed for her - and hugs to you both 🤗 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @andrew65 @tracey38 @Velvetfur Thanks! I'm happy for a bonus but would prefer they started matching our 401k again. But we've been working hard and want expected so hearing the news was good. Tracey that's awful the hospital isn't offering bonus. You were all right in the thick of this mess! 🤬 At least mom is home. Scary about the aneurysms & hopefully she'll be OK. 4y

We‘ve crossed the border into Wales today taking in Mold, Flint and Holywell, tomorrow we head back to the sea taking in the north coast of Wales.

How has Sunday been for you? I think I‘m still reeling from the 7 o‘clock announcements by the Prime Minister.

Crazeedi What did the PM say? I just finished book 2 of #NutsinMay. A quiet Mother's day here. 5y
CocoReads Very quiet Mother‘s Day—we actually did gifts in combination with the girls‘ birthday yesterday so although hubs and twin 2 are cooking dinner for me-we aren‘t really doing much else. Weather is absolute crap, cold and rainy. I‘ve taken many naps and read 1 book. 5y
See All 61 Comments
kezzlou85 What an announcement that was. My youngest daughters school has already announced that they have no idea how they can do that. Even just reception, year 1 and year 6 is 270 children. Its almost like a second peak is inevitable right now. Seems too early. 5y
BookwormM I had a lazy day breaking up reading with housework and a nap. PMs announcement was wishy washy at best and the new slogan makes no sense to me. The update about exercise was only telling people they can now do what they have been doing here for the last few weeks. Cyclists everywhere all weekend not observing social distancing. We have been sticking to rules but so many people have relaxed already. 5y
Birdsong28 We are no clearer now if than we were this morning! He needs to be like Ireland Scotland and Wales and keep things how they are. It's ridiculous! There will be a second spike and it will be worse than this. 😠📚 📖 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Basically still lockdown bit if can‘t work from home you do so from tomorrow but in main not using public transport. Multiple exercise and travel further for exercise. Schools could open from 1st June for Reception (age 4-5), Year 1 and Year 6. 5y
Andrew65 @Birdsong28 Agree totally! 5y
Andrew65 @kezzlou85 Much too early and sending youngest children who have no idea how to self-isolate. On top of those children how do you manage home learning for those children and take care of children of key workers. Real minefield! 5y
Andrew65 @BookwormM People already acting as if over and no risk. 😡 This will waste the last six weeks, deaths and new cases still far too high. 5y
Andrew65 @CocoReads Yes cloudy, windy and very cool here too. 5y
TrishB Such a depressing announcement. My husband has already had a text from his work to say they will be in touch with further info asap. They supply stuff to the construction industry. 😞 we also don‘t have a car. 5y
kezzlou85 @Andrew65 exactly. The first thing they are gonna wanna do is hug the friends they haven't seen for weeks. They're way too little to understand it all. Plus like you say how do you organise who does what learning between home and school. 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 😬 This announcement doesn't seem wise. I'm so sorry! 5y
JenReadsAlot I want to travel to those places right now.... 5y
Cupcake12 I‘ve just watched the announcement. Have year 8 and year 5 girls so both off til at least sept. I didn‘t really see many changes except allowed outside for longer which everyone seems to be doing around by me anyway! 5y
margreads I never made it to Wales when i lived in the UK despite my grandfather coming from there. Sounds like there is similar frustration there as there is here about next stages we find out today what the next few weeks look like for us 5y
Andrew65 @TrishB Ridiculous decisions and statements. Fancy saying something like that at 7.00pm on a Sunday. I agree with you Trish such a depressing announcement. I‘ve been missing from Litsy for a couple of hours whilst I had an online leadership meeting and wrote a letter for parents. 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW So stupid! 😡😡😡 See Union trouble ahead. Jus written a letter to my parents to avoid them contacting school for information when we have none! 😡 5y
Andrew65 @kezzlou85 Absolutely crazy. 😡😡😡 This will take weeks of planning so many issues the more you think about it. 5y
Andrew65 @Cupcake12 Interestingly only said those year groups, not said if have to phase others in before the end of the year. Still a total lack of detail and too short an announcement. Also said can go to countryside beaches etc even if not exercising from next Wednesday. 5y
Andrew65 @JenReadsAlot I love Wales. 😍 5y
Andrew65 @margreads More confusion and no clarity, worryingly you can see this all causing a second spike not preventing it. Have enough people not died this time round and far from the end of deaths from the first peak. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi You are doing better than me with #NutsinMay, not helped by announcements! 5y
TheSpineView Love these pics of Wales! Had a great Mother's Day! The kids are gone home just chillin' now! 5y
Andrew65 @TheSpineView Enjoy your chilling! 5y
TheBookHippie Oh I‘d love to explore all of that!!! Been mostly off all online things since Friday . It‘s been a good fast. 💙 5y
Ms_T I‘ve been absolutely clear on the rules....until now. Work from home but go to work if you can‘t/don‘t use public transport but do if you need to/stay alert to prevent the virus spreading but go out as much as you like...I‘m so confused, nervous and anxious again 😐 5y
Andrew65 @Ms_T And we‘re the intelligent ones! Love to see the science all these changes are based upon because they seem totally stupid to me! Youngest children who can‘t social isolate go to school, secondary age children who can‘t don‘t. Absolutely crazy! 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Great to have you back with us. 😊 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 Very frustrating. 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW I see a rocky road ahead for schools. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 wow that is some mixed signals 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 sending a hug 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Think all us Brits need it tonight! 😳 Can mix with work colleagues social distancing but not mix with families social distancing!?! Can go to school in June to be around other families children, but cannot mix with our nieces, nephews, grandchildren, or children that don‘t live in the same household. !?! (edited) 5y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Wales looks beautiful! I am so sorry all my British friends got such a shitshow of an announcement on a Sunday evening. My thoughts are with you all! 💚 my day was good. I started the day with a bit of reading. Target wasn't a mess so we got some items we needed. Had a socially distant BBQ at the in-laws and saw my pregnant sister-in-law to drop off a few small gifts. Overall a good day, and we'll watch some wrestling when we get home. 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 It does seem to be a weird confluence of guidelines...I‘m surprised they want to send children back out there...are you guys not having the “Kawasaki” problem that we‘re having over here? I fear that now that you guys will relax things, Trump will follow Boris‘ lead..oh, dear! Why aren‘t they afraid of this? I certainly am! Hope you are well, Andrew—be safe, my friend. ♥️ 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve been off all social media since Friday so I have no idea what‘s going on 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
kezzlou85 @Andrew65 yeah gonna be a nightmare. My daughters school sent an email asking parents not to call as they dont know anything. It doesn't say if its just them going back or are they phasing in other years too. Mine are years 5 and 8 so not initially affected by it. 5y
Velvetfur I'm getting upset now, there is definitely a second spike looming and hundreds more people will die. Look what happened in South Korea only a few days ago. I've been getting texts this past week from NHS telling me to shield until 30th June, I presume due to my asthma. Bit flippin' late innit! So now I'm scared to even pop to a supermarket for a few things. I hate this country. 5y
Andrew65 @kezzlou85 I sent a similar letter at 8.30 (written last night), I don‘t understand primaries in potentially from June but secondary not. Makes no sense. Understandably unions not happy. No provision as yet for PPE equipment, tracing and testing. (edited) 5y
Itchyfeetreader @Velvetfur so many of us got letters this week. It makes you wonder doesn‘t it about how organised they are. Also feeling really frustrated. People will die because of this. So not a good end to a lovely weekend 5y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur Yes heard a lot similarly from people over past few days. Horse has bolted scenario. If you do stay in and want deliveries we have managed these easiest through Iceland, regularly opening up new slots. We have a delivery this afternoon and delivering everything asked for. Asda delivery slots seem to be released after midnight. Had one delivery from them but some things not available. We will get through this. 🥰 Stay safe 🥰 5y
Andrew65 @Itchyfeetreader From my dealings with things over schools they are so not organised! Look at the debacle over vouchers. We have had to set own system up and have to hope we get repaid. 🤞 5y
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Best way to be 🥰 5y
Itchyfeetreader @andrew65 that‘s so annnoying. This isn‘t hypothetical it‘s real people‘s lives, health and food. Some of this stuff isn‘t difficult to actually do either. 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat A few cases of Kawasaki, that is incredibly worrying! Obviously I‘m vulnerable as older male hits two indicators not to mention things taking tablets for but not in shielding category. Thanks will try my level best. 🥰 5y
Andrew65 @Itchyfeetreader No it‘s not. 😡 5y
Velvetfur @Itchyfeetreader @Andrew65 Thank you xx Probably many people who've died should've been shielding but didn't know that; I didn't know because all along the guidelines have said 'severe asthma' and mine isn't severe. But now I'm told it applies to me as well. I've just been lucky so far. Thank you for the delivery tips Andrew x 5y
Velvetfur @Andrew65 I can't imagine what you're going through emotionally, Boris' waffle last night couldn't have been more worrying. I'm worried for the poor little children in schools crying because they're scared due to not really understanding the situation, as well as worried for the adults in their lives who will be at risk. What a horrible world we live in 🙁 5y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur Unfortunately at the moment it is a very worrying and depressive place. Seems totally unbelievable situation. Very worried school wise about a number of situations, 4, 5 and 6 year olds would be better off with their parents. Take care, try to keep away from news at the moment and do something to distract your brain. Sending best wishes. 🥰 (edited) 5y
Velvetfur Btw @Andrew65 and @gradcat what is the Kawasaki thing? I would normally just Google it myself but I don't know if I should put 'the Kawasaki situation' or if that would just give me a load of rubbish! 5y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Kawasaki-disease/ Seems a number of children with this disease have also tested positive for Covid 19. Aware three children died from it in New York and have been others. 5y
Velvetfur @Andrew65 What the.... That sounds horrible, I'll take a look at the link now, thank you. In response to your other comment, I don't bother with the TV news or newspapers, but I'm really bad for being on Twitter all the time and getting the 'real' news from there....probably should limit my time on there though xx 5y
Velvetfur @Andrew65 Oh. Right. I see. So Covid wasn't doing it's job properly by not killing off enough kids, so fate has given us Kawasaki disease so all ages can now benefit from a bit of death. Nice one, fate. **angry face** 5y
TheBookHippie People keep sending me this article @Andrew65 I too wonder if we are at this long term if the entire education model will fall and a new one built https://medium.com/regenerative-global/education-is-over-8b9d57502b2c (edited) 5y
gradcat @Velvetfur & @Andrew65 Sorry Vikki, my hours are all turned around again, so I‘m getting messages rather late. I woke up at 2 am today, so maybe my hours are being righted! Anyway, I see that Andrew told you what Kawasaki is...we have dozens of cases in New York City, but it might become worse—who can tell? I hope you two are keeping safe. 😘♥️ 5y
Velvetfur @gradcat That's ok, there's no rush for you to reply and we're in different time zones anyway! 😂 I hope your recovery is going well. That disease sounds horrendous, the poor children 🙁 I've been shielding but I'm going to have to go out to get some food today, I'm running out....need crisps and chocolate! 😂 5y
gradcat @Velvetfur Give me sunflower seeds & Werther‘s hard candies, and I‘m set!! 😂 5y
Velvetfur @gradcat mmmmmm seeds 😁 5y
gradcat @Velvetfur You would NOT believe how many I eat...if you planted me, I would grow into sunflowers, pumpkins and/or sesame! 😂 5y
