Love in the Big City | Sang Young Park

Love in the Big City is the English-language debut of Sang Young Park, one of Korea's most exciting young writers. A runaway bestseller, the novel hit the top five lists of all the major bookstores and went into nine printings. Both award-winning for its unique literary voice and perspective, and particularly resonant with young readers, it has been a phenomenon in Korea and is poised to capture a worldwide readership.Told in four parts that recall the structure of Han Kang's The Vegetarian, Love in the Big City is an energetic, joyful, and moving novel that depicts both the glittering nighttime world of Seoul and the bleary-eyed morning-after. Young is a cynical yet fun-loving Korean student who pinballs from home to class to the beds of recent Tinder matches. He and Jaehee, his female best friend and roommate, frequent nearby bars where they push away their anxieties about their love lives, families, and money with rounds of soju and ice-cold Marlboro Reds that they keep in their freezer. Yet over time, even Jaehee leaves Young to settle down, leaving him alone to care for his ailing mother and to find companionship in his relationships with a series of men, including one whose handsomeness is matched by his coldness, and another who might end up being the great love of his life.A brilliantly written novel filled with powerful sensory descriptions and both humor and emotion, Love in the Big City is an exploration of millennial loneliness as well as the joys of queer life, that should appeal to readers of Sayaka Murata, Tao Lin, and Cho Nam-Joo.

Book shopping!

Not sure how this one escaped my radar in 2022, but I just read about it the other day and then read all the wonderful Litsy reviews and just had to have it.

Grabbed #18 in the Dragon Masters series for my 8 year old - anyone else's kids love this series? He's whipping through them, and we can't keep them on the shelves at the library! #RaisingReaders

I fell into a serious reading slump...years of nothing finished, I think; I just finished this beautiful book!! I got a little lost sometimes timeline-wise, but wow, I fell in love with the characters and the way the world felt alive around them. My favorite quote: "I came to the realization that life was merely the forward motion of going from one's first hospital room to one's last." Def recommend!

This is a fantastic, wild ride of a story about a gay man making his way through life in Seoul. There‘s loneliness, heartbreak, the search for connection & meaningful friendships, the challenge of caring for an aging parent, infatuation & maybe, but maybe not, real love, & the joy of being alive in the moment. Raw, brutally honest, & more than a little funny, I really enjoyed this one. Also Anton Hur‘s translation is excellent.

I liked this one, honest, nuanced and poetic.
It felt real and touching.
Also great translation, keeping some of the Korean expressions for atmosphere but not expecting too much of the reader. I knew my K-drama habit would come in handy at some point🤭🇰🇷

batsy I really enjoyed this! Fun and frothy but also bittersweet and nuanced. 2y

a story specifically about the queer scene in Seoul, and broadly about looking for love in the wrong places. Told in a series of vignettes, Park‘s story took me into an unfamiliar world, all while presenting me with interactions and feelings that resonated in their universality. In the end it wasn‘t necessarily the ‘love‘ that really captured me, instead the moments of missed connection and feeling unseen in even the most intimate of spaces.

Young is trying to find love in Soul. He has some longer relationships and some really short ones. Trying to find the right man is not easy in a society that doesn‘t acknowledge that gays exists and that includes his own mother.

I must admit that I‘m sad about this not making it to the Man Booker International shortlist.

I so enjoyed the writing style in this.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3y
BarbaraBB I loved his style too. A very good read but I think too straightforward to make it to the shortlist. 3y
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB Maybe. I‘m more of a do I like it or don‘t I kind of reader? And he pulled me into the story. 3y
BarbaraBB Me too! I was just thinking about what the Booker jury would think! 3y
batsy @AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB I felt like the style is deceptively casual. It seems simple but there's a lot of depth underneath. For that reason I felt like it wouldn't be shortlisted. But it's a lovely book. 3y

I love when I have a good feeling about a book going into it & it proves to be true. This book is exuberant & messy even while being deeply rooted in protagonist Young's trials & tribulations with love, sex, his creative calling, & caring for his ill mother who's devoutly religious & against his sexuality. The tone is irreverent, witty, & funny, but the book morphs into something deeply moving & tender by the end. I really enjoyed it.

batsy Translated by Anton Hur, who also did Cursed Bunny. Though I know not a word of Korean, I'm assuming that Hur did a great job because the style of both authors really came through in the prose. I will miss Young & his perspective, especially his running commentary on the city, his mother, his friends, & the people he meets & falls in obsession/love with. #internationalbookerprize2022 3y
CarolynM Sounds great. Stacked 🙂 3y
nathandrake1997 Exquisite review ❤️ I've been wanting to read this book for so long, being queer myself. The synopsis reminds me a bit of BOX HILL by Adam Mars Jones, a book I absolutely loved. But, it is so expensive here 😭💔 since Tilted Axis press doesn't have a local distributor in India 😭💔 3y

batsy @nathandrake1997 Thank you! 💜 I haven't read Box Hill though I want to, and maybe this might be lighter in tone? But it's a book that's easy to become fond of. And I know, Tilted Axis titles are expensive in Malaysia, as well 😢 We have practically no local distributors for most imprints & a very unsatisfactory library system. I don't like it but I often turn to Kindle titles because of accessibility/cost (though they're not cheap, either!) 3y

BarbaraBB What a wonderful review again Suba. I just read this one too and really fell for Young and his view on life. 3y

TrishB Sounds great- lovely review 👍🏻 it‘s also expensive here!! 3y
batsy @BarbaraBB Thank you, B! 😘 He's definitely a memorable character. 3y
batsy @AnneCecilie It's not a major twist or revelation, but the subtle shift to a more emotional tone was touching ❤️ 3y
batsy @TrishB Thank you, Trish! As for books, I wish there was a way that it was affordable for everyone whilst authors are also paid generously. A dream world! 3y

Seoul‘s queer scene, finding love in the big city, finding place in the world, taking care of sick mother … those are all big and small problems of Park Young, narrator of the story. He tells us his story in the light mood, humour, but always with the hint of some darker undertones. Interesting and charming.

Cathythoughts Great review 👍 I have it stacked. (edited) 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB I should write a little disclaimer, shouldn‘t I? 😘 Yes, the same reason … because of that I like to read complete longlist before writing reviews, so that I can compare them, and in the comparison with the others, this one is lacking some strength @batsy 3y
BarbaraBB I can see that. It‘s not the winner indeed. But it‘s good in its own way! 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB It is, yes. 😊 3y
batsy @Simona @BarbaraBB Yeah, I totally get what you mean. It likely won't make the shortlist and I understand why; it's not very Booker-y. But I hope that it gains a wider readership 💜 3y

Young is a queer millennial in Seoul, where there‘s still a culture of shame about openly gay relationships. For Young writing is the way to give meaning to life. With humor and melancholy he writes about his job, the care for his dying mother, friendship and sex. And then there‘s love and letting go. The love for Gyu-ho can only be told in stories.

There‘s much more to this book than blurb and cover do imply. #internationalBookerPrize2022

I‘m really enjoying this short novel of a young gay South Korean man dealing with life, friends, family, relationships…

It started just plain fun, before becoming surprisingly sad/touching. Plus a fair amount of ‘They said/did WHAT?‘

Another week dedicated to the International Booker longlist, only six more … I‘m going to start today Love in the Big City by Sang Young Park. #weeklyforecast

rockpools You‘re storming through these! And I‘m v happy to see the page size of Tomb of Sand is SO much smaller than Jacob 😵‍💫. 3y
Simona @rockpools Yeah … I‘m still contemplating about reading Fosse‘s previous books 🧐🤯 … I‘m still waiting for three books to arrived, and one of them is Tomb of Sand … but I saw that the print is quite big with a lot of blank pages and because of that is more around 500p long book than official 739p … that is encouraging, isn‘t it?😘 3y
Cinfhen Any favs yet?? 3y
See All 8 Comments
Simona @Cinfhen Without any doubt The Books of Jacob is the winning book … so far the standing out books are The Book of Mother and Cursed Bunny, but I still have to read 6 more books. 3y
BarbaraBB Interesting! I try to read as many as I can too but I had to start from scratch haha. Just one read, which I loved 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB I found it good, but if I compare it to the others which I have read so far, it is ‘just‘ a story with YA vibes, but with more deep/philosophical musings on bullying … although, some scenes are really vividly good described, gross and unforgettable, but that doesn‘t put a book on a higher, reward worthy level … and one more although - but my prediction is that Heaven is gonna be on the shortlist🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
BarbaraBB We‘ll see! I have bought Olga and have three more books ready to go: The Book of Mother, After the Sun and Love in the Big City! 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB I hope that you will like them all 🤞 3y

LOVE IN THE BIG CITY is a funny and thoughtful story about Young, a gay Korean student who lives in Seoul. The narrative flits back and forth between present and past. If you‘re looking for a plot-driven book, this isn‘t exactly it. It‘s maybe more like an exploration of a queer man‘s life in Seoul. Nightlife. College. His mother‘s illness. His relationships. All its vibrant highs and heartbreaking lows.

Book + noodle soup. I was excited for LOVE IN THE BIG CITY, but I‘m underwhelmed as of page 100. It strikes me as one of those novels where an ordinary person does ordinary things in ordinary ways. I want books in that vein to make the ordinary feel extraordinary—and for me, this ain‘t it. 😔

I‘ve been reading a lot of translated fiction from Asia this year. Not sure what about it appeals to me. The quietness, the slice-of-life quality maybe. This has been one of my favorites. About a gay man living in Seoul and the many people whose paths cross with his. It‘s lovely and sad and just wonderful. Out in Nov in the States.
