Patient Zero
Patient Zero: A Curious History of the World's Worst Diseases | Lydia Kang, Nate Pedersen
10 posts | 5 read | 17 to read
A very timely history of disease outbreaks, from the authors of Quackery: stories of outbreaks (and their patient zeros), plus chapters on the science, culture, and cures for different types of epidemics and pandemics. Popular reading on a timely topic.

Two for one today ?

Patient Zero is an overview of infectious diseases through history and Quackery is about their "cures" ?

They're bith very informative and easy to read.

I liked how the author started each chapter like a case report: patient zero, year, location, which disease, etc. The book discussed prevention and masks in addition to diseases and vaccines. Recommend for anyone interested in epidemiology.

I mean, everyone who gets a birthday coupon from Barnes & Noble immediately goes out and buys a book about horrible diseases with it, right?

KristiAhlers Seems like a solid choice to me 🤣 2y

Amiable @KristiAhlers @AmyG @EvieBee I have a weird fascination with epidemiology. My husband refers to my reading selections as my “Disease of the Month Book Club.” 😀 2y
EvieBee Lol! They‘re fascinating! Have you by chance read this one? 2y
Amiable @EvieBee I have not but I LOVE THE LOOKS OF IT! Thanks for the heads up! Stacking right now.
FYI, I work at a hospital and part of my job is to write patient education documents, so that's why I'm fascinated by this stuff. I'm not really a hypochondriac or a complete weirdo. ;)

EvieBee @Amiable LOL! I love mysteries of all kinds even medical ones. 2y
KristiAhlers @Amiable hey nothing wrong with that. I‘m not allowed to read those kinda books or visit webMD as I‘ll have all the diseases according to the hubby 🤣 2y
Amiable @KristiAhlers Ha! He‘s not wrong —WebMD is a dangerous place! 😀 2y
RamsFan1963 I've read this, it was extremely entertaining and also rather gross at times 2y

Went to B&N to look for birthday gifts for my Mom and I'm so proud of the fact that I only bought 1 book for myself 😄.

Not exactly anyone's choice as light holiday reading, but this is the book that struck me as the most interesting of #December, and the one I discussed most with other people, especially non-readers.

Ah! Nothing says Christmas and holidays more than reading about deadly pandemics 🤣 Seriously, it was an excellent examination of the various deadly diseases that have inflicted mankind, the causes and the various methods to cure (and some gory and gruesome attempted cures) the sick. TW there are some graphic descriptions of the diseases and their effects on the body 4 🧫🧫🧫🧫 1/2

I‘m a bit of an infectious disease lover, especially zoonotic ones, so this book was absolutely fascinating to me. However, you don‘t need special medical knowledge to enjoy it.

The authors look at diseases from antiquity to now, who were the first cases, plus interesting stories of discoverers and survivors. From modern diseases like Ebola, HIV, and Covid-19 to older ones like leprosy, ergotism, and smallpox. #NerdVibes 🤓

Amiable I‘m also a fan of this sub-genre! My husband calls it my “Disease-of-the-Month” book club. 😀 (edited) 2y

4/5

This was a super interesting overview of the history and origins of different disease epidemics throughout history. I learned a lot not only about the diseases themselves, but how medicine has progressed through history to combat disease.

1. Patient Zero by Lydia Kang and Nate Pederson

2. The Dating Dare by Jayci Lee

3. I wanted to do pregnant 1970s Wanda from WandaVision, but didn't manage to get it done in time.
