Mehso-so

Apparently there‘s a max to how much Japanese weirdness I can handle. Reading this one just after Oyamada‘s The Hole turned out to be just a bit too much. It is a short book with three chapters in which a man meets his friend in different circumstances and accompanied by different characters. Very atmospheric though nothing much happens. Weird again and I don‘t know what to make of it.

Librarybelle The cover is intriguing, at least! 11mo
LeahBergen I find that sometimes “Japanese weird” can be very weird indeed. 😂 11mo
vivastory Second @leahbergen . I have to know, what did you think of “The Hole“? (edited) 11mo

vivastory Nvm, I just saw your lovely review 🙂 11mo
BarbaraBB @vivastory I really liked The Hole and I think I would have liked this one just as much had I not read The Hole just a week ago! 11mo
squirrelbrain It‘s a cute cover though! 11mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m with Helen. What a cute cover! @squirrelbrain 11mo
TheAromaofBooks I always wonder about books that are translated... like is this average Japanese fare, or did it get picked for translation BECAUSE it's weird? 11mo
BarbaraBB @TheAromaofBooks Good question! I have the feeling it‘s Japanese fare yet I can‘t be sure of course! 11mo
Megabooks That‘s an excellent question @TheAromaofBooks ! I didn‘t care for this Japanese memoir I finished yesterday. Just so bizarre but in a very Japanese way. 11mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Never heard of that one. But it does sound Japanese for sure. I also read lot of Japanese thrillers, they are less weird @TheAromaofBooks (I keep thinking of your question). Do we know Japanese Littens we can ask? (edited) 11mo
TheAromaofBooks I can't think offhand of any Littens from Japan. But the general concept may apply to other languages as well? German, French, etc. It's even interesting to me what books make it here from Britain and vice versa. I love reading cheesy romances - do they have those in Scandinavian countries, and “they“ (whoever they are haha) just choose to only translate “Nordic Noir“ types of books? Or do people from those areas really prefer that style of book? 11mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks By the way, books from my country that have been translated are hardly ever the quiet, character driven ones 11mo

This book embodies the weirdness I love in Japanese fiction. Oyamada‘s books are full of unsettling strange events and bizarre dialogue between characters. Along with detailed food descriptions I can‘t get enough of. The three long chapters in the book look at relationships and children in some very interesting ways.

batsy I really want to read this! Glad to see it was a pick for you. 1y
sarahbarnes @batsy I think you‘ll like it! I really enjoyed her other two books and this one is just as good. 1y
BarbaraBB This looks so good! Like @batsy I really want to read it. I haven‘t read her before, any suggestions where to start? 1y

This book is very difficult to review. Three very short stories all interlinked, they are well written, a bit weird and the author succeeds in making you feel uneasy. I really enjoyed it (?) and will definitely read more from the author.

Thanks to NetGalley and to the publisher for this ARC
