13 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Two lifelong friends decide to trade places the week before Christmas and end up finding love along the way in this delightful novel from the queen of holiday stories, #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber. Peter Armstrong and Hank Colfax are best friends, but their lives couldnt be more different. Peter, the local pastor who is dedicated to his community, spending time visiting the flock, attending meetings, and, with the holiday season approaching, preparing for the Christmas service and live nativity. As a bartender, Hank serves a much different customer base at his family-owned tavern, including a handful of lonely regulars and the local biker gang. When Peter scoffs that Hank has it easy compared to him, the two decide to switch jobs until Christmas Eve. To their surprise, the responsibilities of a bartender and a pastor are similar, but taking on the others work is more difficult than either Peter or Hank expected. As the two begin to see each other in a new lightand each discovers a new love to cherishtheir lives are forever changed. In The Christmas Spirit, Debbie Macomber celebrates the true meaning of the holidays and the inclusive community spirit that binds us all.

Traci1 @Catsandbooks it was very odd and old fashioned. It was a grandmother telling a story to her 6 and 8 year old grandchildren. The story was about a preacher and bartender who swapped places. It involved bikers and strippers, and the 8 year old explained what a strip club was to the 6 year old. And then it was really preachy. The moral was you shouldn't judge people but it felt very judgy. It was short, though, so a good one I guess to try her out. 5mo
JenReadsAlot I think I have this one on my kindle.... 5mo
Catsandbooks @Traci1 😬😬 oh boy tells you not to judge but then judges the whole time...yikes 5mo
Traci1 @JenReadsAlot you may like it. Seems like she has loads of fans, so maybe it's just me. 🤷‍♀️ 5mo
JenReadsAlot I think I've read a couple before but clearly they are not memorable! 5mo
CogsOfEncouragement I enjoy her Cedar Cove series when I just want an easy, happy read. I‘ve read a couple of her stand alones too and gave them just 2⭐️ though. lol 5mo
TheAromaofBooks She frequently has premises that I think I will like, but they never seem to actually work for me. A lot of her books feel more outline-y to me than an actual book. But a lot of people love her! 5mo
BookmarkTavern At least it‘s finished! 😅 5mo

A December hold came in so I enjoyed another Christmas read. A pastor and a bartender… yup. Friends decide to switch jobs the week of Christmas. One‘s a pastor and the other owns a bar. This book is funny and heartwarming. The narrator is a grandma sharing this special story with her grandkids. A lovely listen.

Right from the start, I loved this heartwarming, delightful and so very fun to read book! Pete, a pastor, and Hank, a bartender, decide to swap jobs for a week. Some things went hilariously wrong, while a whole lot of good came out of their job swap experiment. This book is guaranteed to warm your heart and make you laugh many times. I really enjoyed it!

#WinterReadathon week 1–60 points. I did the first 3 daily challenges. Have yet to finish a book, Christmas Themed or not. I am halfway through the tagged book though so maybe by tomorrow? My new “not a promotion” is taking all my mental abilities and we‘re full up for the first time in weeks so we‘re busy on top of that.

DieAReader Great job all the same!🥳🥳🥳 The new “not a promotion” doesn‘t sound like much fun😬 I hope u get more relax time this week to enjoy some reading♥️📚🤓 1y
CocoReads @DieAReader I think it‘ll be okay once I get used to it—my main gripe is that it‘s more responsibility for not more money as it‘s dangerously close to being a manager, which I‘ve never wanted to be. I like all my coworkers though but we‘ve been going through a lot of changes since the buyout and so there‘s been pushback. That‘s why I‘ve been calling it a “not a promotion”, gotta have some fun with it. 🤪 1y
DieAReader @CocoReads More responsibility & same $ to me also = not a promotion to me too🤪(& maybe a cop out by someone higher on the food chain🤨🧐?). Manager (even those dangerously close ones) definitely should include a pay adjustment! 1y
Andrew65 Great to see you are managing to fit some reading in around all your challenges on the work front. Totally unfair to expect you have to have more responsibility without more pay, but unfortunately that is no surprise from many employers. Sending positive thoughts 🎄🎄🎄 (edited) 1y
CocoReads Yes, it‘s definitely so@etching from up the food chain. They‘re calling it a lateral transfer which is how they can get away with not more pay. I think, in the end, it might pan out to more money but we‘ll see. They are notoriously stingy with the commoners but there‘s always money for construction (at the bigger facilities) and for the top heavy VP level. 1y

First book read for #winterreadthon. A sweet story about best friends set during Christmas.

It also got me a bingo! 🎉 And I‘m half-way to Santaing the entire board. 🎅🏼🎅🏼🎅🏼

Plus, it has a tree on the cover for Day 1 of the #winterreadathondailychallenge 🎄

Andrew65 Wow that‘s a great start and love the stamps! 🎄🎄🎄 (edited) 1y

I knew just from the blurb that this book was going to be hilarious. A bartender and a pastor switching places, I knew it was going to be good. I just wish it had been a little longer, so we could really see how things developed a bit better. Other than that, I really enjoyed the book and got a few smiles and laughs from it.

The Christmas Spirit by beloved author, Debbie Macomber… the perfect book look to kick off your holiday reading! A sweet "once upon a time" story told by a grandmother to her grandchildren. The twist is that her "story" really did happen once upon a time. Two best friends, each thinking the other has it easier than they do, trade places. One swaps out his stressfuland busy pastorship for running his best friends bar, (cont in comments)...

TheHeartlandBookFairy and the bartending friend leaves behind his his late night hours and nonstop work for what he thinks will be it'll be the easy job of being a pastor. The swap takes place right before Christmas and is set to last less than a week but the life lessons and positive changes for each man as well as others around them will stick with them all for a lifetime. The Spirit of Christmas will surely get you all in the spirit for Christmas!
