I listened to this one over audio. I‘m still not sure how I feel about this one. On one hand I found it interesting to hear about the early colonial days in America from the perspective of a woman. Her ability to survive in the wild after escaping the settlement was interesting. Some parts I found compelling but other parts felt a bit repetitive. There was something that was off for me, not sure what. It was also my first Groff book. #bookspin

Tamra I felt the same. 8mo

Oh boy, this one I did not like at all. I‘ve read a few Lauren Groff books and enjoyed what I read. I just did not care for this one. Sorry Lauren.

#authoramonth - Finished in February

Tamra I wasn‘t that crazy about it either. 9mo
Hooked_on_books I LOVED Matrix, and this did not live up to it as a worthy follow up for me. And when I read it I felt like everyone was raving about it, so it‘s refreshing to see this. 9mo
dabbe #fanofthepan! 🤩🤩🤩 9mo
Laughterhp @Hooked_on_books I loved the Matrix too and the reason I picked this one up. 9mo

Making slow headway in February on many challenges, though I did enjoy the tagged book for #AuthorAMonth and downloaded a couple more Groffs to my ever-growing ebook backlog. She sure writes a lovely sentence, tho the book was brutal in parts.
Fav of the month: prob Rachel Incident?
I DNF'd my #bookspin (American Mermaid)
+ finished another of @vivastory #AuldLangSpine picks which was also fun (The Art Thief)
A good month!

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Fantastic month!! 9mo

What a day to finish this one! “Big” (ish lol) snowstorm here in 🗽

Groff‘s words kept me so engaged for a story that in other‘s hands I think I‘d find pretty tepid. This one requires a strong stomach though: lots of blunt talk about biology (let‘s leave it at that) & relationships with animals when you are in survival mode. Set in Colonial America, also grapples with spirituality, sexuality, & classism. #AuthorAMonth

Hmmmmmmm 🤔

Plot was propulsive enough in the beginning, but eventually became repetitive. Also, there are some wonderful nature descriptions, but there were times when the prose felt forced, like Groff was trying too hard to be literary.

I always silently scoff at myself when I write a critique, like I could do any better. 😜 That‘s why I am a reader, not a writer.

Suet624 I gave it a so-so too for the same reason. 9mo
sarahbarnes I‘m curious about this one but I‘ve definitely seen mixed reviews. 9mo
Hooked_on_books I absolutely loved Matrix and this one was a little disappointing to me as a follow up. 9mo

Tamra @sarahbarnes it wasn‘t terrible otherwise I would have DNF it. Definitely try it! 9mo
Tamra @Suet624 I saw that! 😏 9mo

Groff is an auto-read for me. Love her work. However, I did not love this one. Maybe it‘s because I read it immediately after North Woods. Maybe because this book is grueling and depressing. Groff gets in a lot of great points about a woman‘s place in the 1700‘s, about men and their greed and folly, about nature. But the ongoing visuals of a young girl trying to survive in the wild was relentless. The writing itself was spectacular.

AmyG How was North Woods? 11mo
Suet624 @AmyG Oh my gosh. North Woods was perfect. I absolutely loved it. Beautiful writing with some sentences that just made me stop reading for a bit, so creative. I don't reread many books, but I'll read this one again. 11mo
Tamra I hear North Woods would be big shoes to fill! 11mo

Suet624 @Tamra Yes, and even though North Woods dealt with sad events it had a lighter touch with them. I have a very warm spot in my heart for that book. 11mo
Tamra @Suet624 I‘m anxious to read it. 😃 11mo
AmyG Oh wow! High praise. Now if I can only get to it….many Litsy challenges. 🤣 11mo
Suet624 @Tamra @AmyG I've called 5 bookstores in Vermont and none of them can get copies of North Woods and keep them on the shelf. Backordered for the long list of folks waiting to buy it. I don't think the publishers were prepared for it being on a Best Of list and for the number of people who wanted to purchase copies as gifts. I don't want to oversell the book, but I personally would have grabbed 5 copies for gifts. 11mo
Tamra @Suet624 wow - that‘s amazing! I just put a hold on a library copy. (edited) 11mo
AmyG I got the ebook a while ago when I started reading the hype. And I guess I was lucky because I gave one as a gift. 11mo
kspenmoll My son is so good at scouring the internet local bookstores & finding books but he ran into the same problem! 11mo
Suet624 @kspenmoll there will probably be a surplus after the holidays. I bet the publisher is bummed that they didn‘t have enough copies available to sell. Or maybe it‘s the booksellers who didn‘t order enough copies that are bummed. 11mo
kspenmoll @Suet624 That sounds about right Sue. A Christmas run on. Eventually I can probably get it at the library. I don‘t mind waiting. (edited) 11mo

I really loved this book. In particular, I liked that no creature or perspective is to small or undeserving. Just a very different and interesting read. 👍

This book was absolutely phenomenal! Lauren Groff has a way of writing that is just so beautiful and descriptive. Matrix is still my favorite book by her of all time - this didn't top that in my opinion - but it's still one of the best books I've read this year! 💕📚 #catsoflitsy #rumpel

Wonderful book. Set in 1700‘s , one can identify with this girls struggle through her life , she is fleeing oppression, she has her hopes and dreams. There is immersion in the world at ground level, sensing it , finding home, finding meaning in the soil the stones. Everything is alive…the girl, the trees, the birds, the pulsing earth. I love Lauren Geoff‘s writing.

I‘m going to take a break from Litsy for awhile.

I have a tenuous relationship with Lauren Groff‘s work. I found Fates and Furies to be pretentious and unbelievable, but I loved Matrix. The Vaster Wilds falls somewhere in between. I enjoyed the writing and the story of a girl struggling to survive in the wilderness of colonial America. I didn‘t find anything new or eye-opening thematically. It reminded me of The Island of the Blue Dolphins, which I loved as a child. I will try Groff‘s next work.

SamAnne Good review. I had the same experience with Fates and Furies and Matrix. My library hold just came in for Vaster Wilds and I‘m looking forward to it. 13mo

Chelsea.Poole @Suet624 I loved it!! And I wasn‘t a fan of her previous, tagged, that everyone else adored. It‘s survivalist historical fiction with excellent writing. 11mo
Suet624 Oh good. After having read North Woods I‘m kind of dragging through this one. Hopefully at the end I‘ll have enjoyed the overall experience. 11mo
Chelsea.Poole @Suet624 I‘m in the middle of North Woods and it is phenomenal. I see why this would be a little more of a drag after that it. 11mo

Read an ARC of this couple weeks ago and it is still sitting with me. I know Groff‘s writing isn‘t for everyone, but this one is just something. It‘s a survival story, but also a study of the depths to which humans will sink when faced with horrific circumstances. This is a very, very dark book.

squirrelbrain I just applied for this yesterday on NetGalley - good to hear your views. 1y
PatriciaU @squirrelbrain it is a fascinating study of what can happen when basic human needs are not met. I have followed Groff on social media for a few years and I surmised from some of her posts that she really struggled with Covid and the uprising triggered by the George Floyd murder. If her writing is an indicator of her mood, it was pretty dark. 1y
