The Wake-Up Call
The Wake-Up Call: The Addictive Enemies-to-lovers Romcom from the Million-copy Bestselling Author of THE FLATSHARE | Beth O'Leary
23 posts | 32 read | 9 to read
'Beth O'Leary is that rare, one-in-a-million talent who can make you laugh, swoon, cry and ache all in the same book' Emily Henry Two sworn enemies. One failing hotel. Love is the last thing they need . . . It's the busiest time of the year, and Forest Manor Hotel is quite literally falling apart. So when sworn enemies Izzy and Lucas are given the same shift on the hotel's front desk, they have no choice but to put their differences aside. The hotel won't stay afloat without some sort of miracle. But when Izzy returns a guest's lost wedding ring, the reward convinces management this might fix everything. With four rings still sitting in lost property, the race is on for Izzy and Lucas to save their beloved hotel - and their jobs. As their bitter rivalry turns into something much more complicated, Izzy and Lucas begin to wonder if there's more at stake here than the hotel's future. Can the two of them make it through the season with their hearts intact? 'Heart-warming, touching, sharp and sexy' Lia Louis 'Gorgeous, evocative' Carley Fortune 'This is not just a great rom com, this is a Beth O'Leary rom com' Gillian McAllister 'An utterly delicious read' Louise O'Neill

A delightful enemies to lovers read, I enjoyed the characters and the fun story line, the banter and the humour made it all an engaging read for me. Quirky Izzy brings the “sparkle” to every room she enters the polar opposite of her co-worker Lucas who she is now being forced to share shifts with. One of those reads that leaves you with a big smile and just feeling happier.⭐⭐⭐⭐

I'm normally not a fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope but this one was cute. Lucas and Izzy are more flirty/competitive than mean or nasty. And the author did a good job of showing both sides and why they were hesitant to be honest with their feelings. The hotel is a fun setting with a cast of characters that added to the story as well. #cuteromcom

I love Beth O'Leary and her dual narratives.
I did find this one of her weaker books, though, and it was much lighter than her usual books. She normally has a few twists in there and a little drama/ trauma backstory. I did still really like both of the main characters. An easy read, but it seemed to take me forever to finish it!

Lots of romance tropes in this one and they were done well. I usually don‘t like poor communication but O‘Leary did a great job weaving this story and pulling everything together.

Great use of tropes in this book: grumpy vs. sunshine, enemies to lovers, and workplace romance, which are some of my favorites. I loved the competition that they had with one another as they try to save the hotel. So many fun misunderstandings, comedies of errors, and missed opportunities making for a slow burn and well developed relationship between the two. A sweet romcom that readers will enjoy!

I loved The Switch and The No-Show and at first I didn‘t think I was going to enjoy this story. It‘s about two bickering coworkers at a hotel that is on its last legs, and as it went on I grew to like it. I especially liked the quirky hotel setting and the efforts everyone was making to keep it going. O‘Leary writes light fiction that always has a little bit of seriousness added in, and this was the same.

A little light for a Beth O‘Leary - in a good way. Fun, charming, and light with a cast of sweet characters

I‘m glad this book had a satisfying (if abrupt) end because the middle was a little one-note. Overall I liked but didn‘t love it. I liked the setting of the old, family-run hotel and the side characters (I often liked them more than the 2 main characters). I suggest reading it in the Christmas-New Years time frame if you‘re going to!

I was disappointed that I didn‘t love this book. Normally I can‘t put BOL books down, but this one I found myself struggling to get through. The characters are unlikeable, the storyline is a little dull, and it didn‘t flow very well. Also, Lucas‘ lines were so choppy and awkward. I‘m not sure if this was to portray his accent, but it didn‘t read nicely and almost caused me to give up on the book entirely.

I borrowed the bingo board to demonstrate how tropey this book is, not something I usually expect from O'Leary. Nor did I much appreciate it, though on my third try I did manage to get over the hump and enjoy the book overall. But there really should be a “character needs a kick in the pants“ box for this sort of book, in which one person (usually a woman) is a petty, vindictive pain and the other person (usually a man) somehow loves them for it.

willaful It is a Christmas book, though you can't tell from the cover. 3740 word search points! (Including my first finds of mistletoe.) Prompt maze: enemies to lovers.

Beth O‘Leary is an auto read romance writer for me. I often complain of the overused miscommunication trope a romance, but this is now my litmus story for how to execute this trope successfully. It was fun to root for Izzy and Lucas the entire time. I also appreciated the flushed out ending.

After a month of mysteries and spooky stories, I really need a warm and cozy romance, and this fit the bill. It might not be my favorite by this author (I think I‘ve read them all?) but I very much enjoyed it! And it‘s kind of Christmas-y without feeling like I‘ve got a jump on that holiday.

This may be the ultimate enemy to lover story I have read in a long time. I enjoyed all the found family feels. This book has a Christmas mood without being a Christmas read. And though I don't usually enjoy the miscommunication thing, there is a line in here that I won't soon forget.

Izzy & Lucas work the reception desk of a charming hotel in the Old Forest (which is now on my bucket list) in danger of closing forever. All the remaining employees pull together to get them thru their last Christmas & hope to find a way to keep it open. Despite "hating"each other I &L compete to return some lost wedding rings found on site & learn end up learning about & falling for each other. Not as good as The No Show but still charming.

bookandbedandtea I was a bit frustrated that the reason they hate each other is due to a misunderstanding a year ago which they had never once tried to talk about. And that they clearly never talked much before it or they would have questioned the issue sooner. 14mo

This is my second book by Beth O‘Leary and I loved it so much. This was such a cute fun read and I fell in love with the characters. One of my favorite tropes is enemies to lovers and this had it. I definitely plan to read her other books!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
This is O‘Leary‘s most straightforward romance so far, and the summary honestly sounds like a silly Hallmark Christmas movie, but don‘t let that put you off.
This still has all her usual, wonderful work - endearing MCs, dual POV, side characters that shine so bright - I was so happy to read this & will continue to read anything she writes.

It was a good enemies-to-lovers story set around Christmas time in a hotel that faces closing down.

It was missing the typical Beth O'Leary twist to the story. Or was the twist just obvious to me very early on?

What a great enemy-to-lovers rom-com. While it had some of the traditional tropes, it still felt refreshing & new. The story takes place around X-mas, but even for a grinch like me, it was enjoyable & created the right atmosphere.

Izzy and Lucas both work at Forest Manor Hotel, a whimsical but ramshackle hotel in England. I absolutely loved the dichotomy of Izzy and Lucas‘ personalities, and the side characters provided such depth to the story.

peanutnine I can't wait for this one! I love O'Leary's books! 1y
