From Julia Kelly, internationally bestselling author of The Last Dance of the Debutante, comes the first in the mysterious and immersive Parisian Orphan series, A Traitor in Whitehall. "Kelly spins an Agatha Christie-esque mystery . . . thoroughly delightful and well-researched."Susan Elia MacNeal 1940, England: Evelyne Redfern, known as The Parisian Orphan as a child, is working on the line at a munitions factory in wartime London. When Mr. Fletcher, one of her fathers old friends, spots Evelyne on a night out, Evelyne finds herself plunged into the world of Prime Minister Winston Churchills cabinet war rooms. However, shortly after she settles into her new role as a secretary, one of the girls at work is murdered, and Evelyne must use all of her amateur sleuthing expertise to find the killer. Evelyne Redfern is the perfect character to center a historical mystery series around. She is a spunky, smart, avid reader with an intriguing backstory. When she finds the body of a murdered coworker, of course she is going to investigate and do a better job than anyone else and I am going to enjoy every page detailing her progress. This was a really charming start to a series that I am looking forward to continuing.

Started this as an audiobook because I needed something for my drive. Finished it yesterday morning in print. Pretty good for an author‘s first attempt at historical mystery. Well contextualized historical details but I guessed the murderer super early on so it wasn‘t very complex. Appreciated the references to mystery writers and books sprinkled throughout. I‘d give it a 3.5/5

A Traitor in Whitehall is the first in Parisian Orphan Series. It is a historical fiction mystery series. Julia Kelly has definitely started the series of in a good book.

It's 1940 in England and Germany has begun it's blitz on England. Evelyn Renforn is working at a mutation plant when one night she is spotted by Mr. Fletcher. He offers her a job as a typist at Whitehall. Soon, she is plunged into a murder investigation and looking for ⬇️

I enjoyed reading 'A Traitor in Whitehall '. I will say it was a little slow at the start, but soon picked up. Evelyn is feisty in a 1940 way and I like that about her. I thought there was good character development, intrigue and a little suspense. I really like the fact that Evelyn is a reader and Kelly bought that out in the book. I enjoyed her little spurs with Poole about English Detective Novels vs American ones. I will definitely be reading more of this series. I came upon it from someone's in Litsy that had read it and recommended it. Glad I took their recommendation.

"Mrs. Redfern!" snapped Miss Wilkes, causing me to jerk up and my pencil to skitter across the page of my notebook.

Can I just say how much I LOVE Evie? This is the first book in a new mystery series and I'm hooked! I love Julia Kelly as a general rule and I love how she weaves a mystery. Highly recommend this one.

Great start to a new historical fiction cozy mystery series! I absolutely loved Evelyn ‘Evie‘ and her determination which led to her detective role🕵🏼‍♀️ The mystery had a good little twist and kept my interest. The ending was perfect and definitely set up for more in this series! I‘ll for sure be back for more when the next book comes out!

I always find myself drawn to books set during WWII and this wartime mystery makes for a fast-paced & engaging read. Evelyne Redfern has some notoriety in her past for her parents‘ bitter divorce, but a chance encounter offers her a new way to do her bit for the war as a typist in the underground Cabinet War Rooms. But her first shift leads to a new task to solve a murder, uncover a mole and put her love of detective fiction to practical use!

Evelyn Redfern comes from a notorious family that had Evelyn in the middle of a child custody case.

When her mother died, and her father didn‘t want her, she became known as the Paris Orphan.

To ease her situation, Evelyn found solace in reading mysteries.

I liked her other books better, but a good storyline.

The beginning of the Parisian Orphan historical mystery series, Evelyn Redfern is hired as a “spy”/typist in a secret British underground government bunker during WW2. She is charged with helping to root out a possible information leak, but while working discovers the body of a fellow typist. She teams up with another agent (David Poole) and they begin to uncover secrets about their colleagues‘ lives/backgrounds. I really enjoyed this. The 🔻

robinb pacing was good, Evelyn and David were interesting and compelling characters (we learn fascinating tidbits from Evelyn‘s childhood), the setting felt real/vivid and the story well plotted. I really am looking forward to further adventures with this intrepid, spunky heroine. 4.25/5⭐️ (edited) 1y
