I was fascinated by this background to the Ghost of Christmas Present‘s speech against people doing deeds of “ill-will” etc in his name. #FootnoteGeek #ChristmasCarolReread #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead
I love picturing Dickens dancing as heartily as Fezziwig. #ChristmasCarolBuddyReaf #ChristmasCarolReread #FootnoteGeek
#FootnoteGeek catching up with some favorites I‘ve come across for #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #ChristmasCarolReread
So interesting to think of a time when US securities were practically worthless. #ChristmasCarolReread #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead
Knowing how much Dickens loved these stories, knowing how much of himself he put into Scrooge really helps me to humanize the old codger and find empathy for him. Also he shows so much imagination! Which means he has the capacity to imagine a better self. #ChristmasCarolReread #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead
“My father‘s family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip.” #DickensianDecember #GreatExpectations #OpeningLines @jenniferw88
I‘ve never seen this movie with the great Sir Alec Guinness as Marley, but I bet the Force was with him! 😂 #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #ChristmasCarolReread
#ChristmasCarolBuddyRead Marley‘s jaw bandage was a common practice, as were deathbed portraits like this one of Dickens 😢 #ChristmasCarolReread #FootnoteGeek
Oh how I love this! It seems he really was having fun writing this story. And now I‘d really like to get a special little shelf... #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #ChristmasCarolReread
Since more than one person posted about this bizarro expression I thought we might all like to know that apparently it means to lack compassion...as in I suppose to really not give a 💩? Sorry 😂😂😂 #ChristmasCarolReread #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #FootnoteGeek
“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigor then?” ...in case you were wondering, Scrooge was not advocating more gym time for the poor.😱 Always saddens me to know Dickens became very Scroogey about the penal system later in life. #FootnoteGeek #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #ChristmasCarolReread
Sad to learn Dickens didn‘t really have to exaggerate to describe Bob Cratchit‘s working conditions... #FootnoteGeek #ChristmasCarolReread #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead
Whoa, Dickens throwing some extra shade on Hamlet in this deleted passage.😂👻#FootnoteGeek #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #ChristmasCarolReread
I love this bit about the dummy books, especially the titles...it underlines Dickens snarky humor, some of which is possibly lost on the modern reader but much of which comes through. #FootnoteGeek #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #ChristmasCarolReread
I thought I would share a few goodies from this book to go along with our first installment of #ChristmasCarolBuddyRead #ChristmasCarolReread This is part of the first page of the manuscript. I really geek out at seeing a writer‘s handwritten work with strikes through, etc. I can just picture him scribbling away at his desk!
“France, at the time, was two or more countries...” In some respects, this seems very relevant to America today. #FootnoteGeek #ATaleofTwoCities
#FootnoteGeek with a ‘new‘ insult to hurl at the evening news 😝 #ATaleofTwoCities ...”it would be easier for the weakest poltroon that lives, to erase himself from existence, than to erase one letter of his name or crimes from the knitted register of Madame Defarge.” #vocabulary
#FootnoteGeek ...like the Muffin Man, I sure don‘t understand why we got rid of the pieman. Who wouldn‘t love a pie man walking down their street?! 🥧😋 #ATaleofTwoCities
#FootnoteGeek back and surprised to learn she‘s misunderstood the meaning of this word all her life...thought it had to do with dead bodies not lawyers!😳 #ATaleofTwoCities #vocabulary
Imagine paying to visit the asylum and “see the show of the insane” We have a ways to go on mental health issues but I guess humanity has made some progress 😨 #FootnoteGeek #ATaleofTwoCities
And I just found out in my audiobook of Confederacy of Dunces this morning that the J. in Ignatius J. Riley stands for Jacques. Perfect! #FootnoteGeek #ATaleofTwoCities
I finally found the box with Volume Two of The Annotated Dickens so #FOOTNOTEGEEK IS BACK IN BUSINESS!! 😆 This is indeed an interesting problem and one translators must also grapple with: how to capture a character‘s idiosyncrasies in dialogue when when not presenting it in its original tongue. #ATaleofTwoCities
This illustration perfectly captures all the odiousness of Bounderby. 🤢 #HardTimes
#FootnoteGeek ...well there's an expression that has fallen out of the common parlance...and probably for the best.😂 Also goes to show a simpler title, like #HardTimes is more likely to have staying power.
According to the footnotes, in #HardTimes Signor Jupe's hat with "a pigtail bolt upright (an obtrusive phallic symbol)" was a popular mummers' costume and survived into our times in the form of Sunny Jim of Force Wheat Flakes fame. I'd never heard of any of it so of course I had to google and... yup that's some interesting advertising ? Any Brits familiar with this? #FootnoteGeek
#FootnoteGeek with another for the 'did not know that!' file.... I always thought mocha had something to do with chocolate!
#FootnoteGeek loving this list of alternative titles for #HardTimes. "Two and Two are Four, Prove It!" just might be my favorite...what's yours? #Titles
#FootnoteGeek, perhaps like Queen Victoria, also had no idea of this meaning of the word...glad it's fallen out of use, cuz, um .. ew🤢 #OliverTwist
Dickens around the time he wrote #HardTimes in the mid 1850s, about halfway through his writing career.
So #footnotegeek has just one question: does this mean Daffy Duck was drunk?! 🤔🍸🦆⁉️ #OliverTwist
Sorry for the quotes marathon, but this introduction was so interesting! I have never actually encountered the word 'Bumbledom' before but I think it's awesome and I can think of at least one choice example immediately! 😂 #OliverTwist
This anti-semitism has always really bothered me, so it's interesting to read that Dickens at least evolved somewhat on this over time and tried to make some amends. #OliverTwist
I think I recall a scene about this in the recent BBC series about Queen Victoria! #OliverTwist
Um...nope! Turns out he was just getting warmed up.😊 #OliverTwist
The young Dickens wrote so much he couldn't get life insurance: "the 'Board' seemed disposed to think I work too much." A great example of Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule. Planning to use this on the kids when they complain about homework ? #OliverTwist
#footnotegeek with some neat info for the #bookhistory #bookworm on how these serial novels could be converted to book form.
#footnotegeek ...a round of camphor juleps, anyone??? Nope. I think we'll probably pass. As for the medical definition of julep, I suspect many a bartender would probably concur that it makes the medicine go down quite pleasantly indeed. ☺️ #PickwickPapers
#footnotegeek with a fun Friday fact with which to impress your cab or ride share driver this weekend... a hackney is a type of horse! 🐎 #PickwickPapers
Couldn't agree more here with John Forster, Dickens biographer. The part of #PickwickPapers set in the Fleet Prison is by far my favorite so far. Leave it to Dickens to take what was intended to be a comic, farcical look at the genteel sporting life and use it to shine a light on the plight of those confined to debtors prison. #footnotegeek
"By one set of intimate acquaintances, especially well informed, he has been killed outright; by another, driven mad; by a third, imprisoned for debt..."
Such was the popularity of The #PickwickPapers, that this was the blow back when its author took a month off to mourn the loss of his beloved sister-in-law Mary Hogarth! #footnotegeek
"'Having your likeness taken, sir,...We're capital hands at likenesses here. Take 'em in no time and always exact.'" What an interesting notion that all the prison turnkeys would take Pickwick's likeness by memorizing his looks, taking "a good long view of him" and studying his "features with most intent and thoughtful faces." One of those striking, surprising, and masterfully written little scenes that Dickens is so good at. #PickwickPapers
And here I thought it had something to do with press secretaries. 🌳😳🎤#footnotegeek #spicy
#footnotegeek ...18th and 19th centuries are sounding awfully civilized. #PickwickPapers
#footnotegeek @Riveted_Reader_Melissa More proof for your theory —it turns out Pickwick was a real name too! #InHonorofSpankle #Spankle #PickwickPapers
#footnotegeek finding more evidence on the next page...the stern, glowering Mr. Justice Stareleigh was based on a real judge named Gazelee?! Truth really is stranger than fiction...and Lord Brain would no doubt agree. 😂 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Eamann #InHonorogSpankle #Spankle #PickwickPapers
#footnotegeek musing that while it seems Dickens did have a thing for oddball names...dude's actual name was Bompas?! @Riveted_Reader_Melissa #InHonorofSpankle #Spankle #PickwickPapers
#footnotegeek 19th Century insults edition. In case you were all wondering what a cad really is...you're welcome!🤓#PickwickPapers
