"UTTERLY COMPELLING . . . WONDERFULLY SATISFYING . . . VIRTUALLY FLAWLESS."--Chicago TribuneBALTIMORE WOMAN DISAPPEARS DURING FAMILY VACATION, declares the headline. Forty-year-old Delia Grinstead is last seen strolling down the Delaware shore, wearing nothing more than a bathing suit and carrying a beach tote with five hundred dollars tucked inside. To her husband and three almost-grown children, she has vanished without trace or reason. But for Delia, who feels like a tiny gnat buzzing around her family's edges, "walking away from it all" is not a premeditated act but an impulse that will lead her into a new, exciting, and unimagined life. . . . "TYLER DETAILS DELIA'S ADVENTURE WITH GREAT SKILL. . . . As so often in her earlier fiction, [she] creates distinct characters caught in poignantly funny situations. . . . Tyler writes with a clarity that makes the commonplace seem fresh and the pathetic touching."--The New York Times

I like how Anne Tyler writes, I like her style. This is the story of a 40 yr old woman who has reached that time in her life when she feels unseen, underappreciated, that life has somehow turned out in a way that was unexpected. Oh the turmoil of being middle aged. Wanting things to be different and not knowing if it's possible, necessary, or if you should stay in your lane and do what is expected until your time is done.
3.5 stars

jlhammar Me too! I always know I'm going to enjoy her books. 2y

79/Ladder Of Years is not for everyone (you may find it tedious or plotless), but, for me, it's five stars. Tyler captures the bland, monotony of daily life, as well as the invisibility of matriarchs, the gears that keep patriarchal societies in motion.
I speculated about the ending, worried that no possible version would feel satisfying. It wasn't, which is a credit for the reader to empathize with Delia.
Anne Tyler is one of my favorite authors.

MemoirsForMe Great review! And so nice to meet another Anne Tyler fan! 🙌🏻 I‘m reading Saint Maybe right now. 3y
MelKelsey @UwannaPublishme, thank you! I haven't read Ssint Maybe yet! Let me know what you think. I picked up Redhead by the Side of the Road today. Have you read it? 3y
MemoirsForMe Oh, you‘ll love Redhead! More endearing and quirky characters. I loved Micah and his sisters. I‘ve been on a quest to read all of her books. I‘m getting close! 3y
MelKelsey @UwannaPublishme cool quest! Let me know when you finish! 3y

#LadderofYears #AnneTyler #BookSpinBingo

Delia Grinstead, 40-year-old mother of three almost-grown children, on a sudden impulse, walks away from her marriage, hitches a ride into the unknown, and settles in a strange new town. But soon after she begins her impersonal, unencumbered new life, fresh responsibilities inevitably accumulate.

EadieB This is a story about the 90's but feels more like the 50's. It has themes of abandonment, identity and a second chance for love. Has bits of humor but depressing in parts. Tyler's books are enjoyable. I think I will read Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant next. Read this and find out how Delia seems to have found a new and exciting life. 3y

I first discovered Anne Tyler in 1995 when my bookstore recommended this novel. Back then, I envied Delia‘s fearlessness. She just walked away from everything (boring job, ungrateful family) to start a new life. This reread made me appreciate Anne even more as she skewers the complexities of our relationships. They‘ll never be perfect, but they‘ll survive the storms with a little faith, compromise and much love.

Somehow this is my first Anne Tyler book. How is that possible?
#mounttbr

Leftcoastzen How is that possible? I think I haven‘t read this one . 5y
Ruthiella I came to Tyler relatively late too. I first read A Spool of Blue Thread because of the TOB. Amateur Marriage is my favorite so far . 😀 5y
merelybookish @Leftcoastzen I don't know. It's funny how that happens. I've known about her and seen her books around all my life. 🤷‍♀️ 5y

I didn‘t hate this, but I didn‘t really like it either. I never really felt invested in the story. It started with promise; middle aged Delia is living a mundane life, largely ignored by her husband and teenaged children. One day she just walks away... But after that it just lost me. I actively disliked Delia, and felt slightly baffled by the whole second half. A pick because it was a light read during a crazy week, but otherwise 🤷‍♀️

I start a new job today after previously working 22 years at the same firm. To say I‘m nervous would be an understatement! I‘m so not ready to be the new girl 🙈. In theory though I‘ll have much more reading time as I have a longer commute, but I suspect this week I‘ll struggle to focus, so I‘m choosing something I hope will be fairly easy going!

JennyM Ooo, good luck. I hope you have a great first day 😊 (edited) 6y
Cathythoughts Oh Jill.. the best of luck ! It is hard being the new girl ... but you won‘t be the new girl for long. I have that book too ( not read yet ) so I look forward to your review... good luck 💕 6y
