I started the 2000s off with a bang, turning 18 the night of the millennium 🥳 It was then all about friendship, love, and big girl moves, with uni, travel, marriage, pets, house buying, and emigration. There were choppy hairdos, feminist reads, and lots of dancing...it was my 20s! #Belowzer00s

As I emerge out of the festive fog, still not really sure what day it is, here‘s this week and a bits #bookreport. I also read an ARC, not pictured, but it was so bad I‘ll say no more about that 😬

I finished the year on 192 books, which is a record for me, and these were pretty good reads to end the year with.

Tanisha_A Wow! Amazing! Also, be safe. ❤️ 3w
TrishB Great stats 👍🏻 3w
JennyM @Tanisha_A thank you, T 😘 We aren‘t near the fires but my heart is breaking as the country burns. 3w

JennyM @TrishB turning off the telly has had a huge impact on the amount of my reading! 3w
TrishB Apart from football I don‘t really watch telly!! 3w
Kalalalatja Hope you have had some lovely holiday days! And that book in the top left corner looks interesting, what did you think about it? 😊 3w
JennyM @Kalalalatja happy new year! Hope you‘ve had a good holiday too. It was a fascinating read - she‘s a well known Aussie journalist who was duped by a man who wasn‘t who he said he was. And apparently this type of thing is all too common! 3w
JennyM @TrishB if it‘s football the telly is on at ours too! ⚽️ 3w
Sace Sounds like you had a very productive reading year! 3w
Cinfhen Amazing 🙌🏻192 books is incredible!!!! I really liked 3w
Crazeedi congrats on great job! I have 21 Truths to read! 3w
Suet624 Matt Haig‘s book was terrific. 3w
JennyM @Sace @cinfhen @crazeedi Thank you. I read so many great books, too, which is the best thing. I also really liked 21 truths. To say it‘s written in list form, it got me teary in a few places 😢 3w
JennyM @Suet624 it was a great book to read around the mayhem of Christmas - a good dose of perspective! Hope you had a good festive holiday, Sue, and happy new year 😘 3w
Cinfhen It sounded so gimmicky but it worked so well!! Really Original (edited) 3w
Suet624 Had a lovely holiday, thank you. Best wishes for a wonderful year ahead. 3w
Rissreads 192 books! Wow! Are they a mixture of read and listened too? 2w
JennyM @Rissreads yep...it was 45 audios and 147 print books. If only I could read that number in print. How are you...heading to NZ soon? Xx 2w
Rissreads I read 44 print books and listened to 17. I didn't quiet achieve my goal of 50 print books, but there is always this year! I did more than double the amount of Australian books I read though, so very happy with that. Yep, I am sitting at the airport now waiting to board my flight. I catch up with Paula @Centique after the 15th. This is my first overseas trip in 24 yrs! I'm very excited to be travelling and to spend some time with my daughter. 2w
JennyM @Rissreads oh yey!!! Have a safe flight and enjoy your time with your daughter and Paula, too. I‘d love to see your photos with @Centique Happy holidays lovely 😊 (edited) 2w

KarenUK Ooh.... I have this on my shelf unread.... gonna have to change that 😍 3w
Freespirit Hi @JennyM it is still smokey here with flair ups still happening, but not as bad as down south. We really need some good rain. Our farm got 358mm in 2019 which is less than 1/3 our normal...😥 3w

'Round Midnight | Laura McBride
post image

This story is about four women who, over a number of decades, are connected through a Vegas casino. It was touching and ran deeper than I expected. And, yet again, I was impressed with how skilled McBride is at weaving complex stories together (although things did wrap up a little too neatly for me). But overall this was a great read and is worthy of more litsy love.

Cathythoughts Nice review! I have this one on kindle ... must get there. Still reading American Wife ... great storytelling! I think you found me a new favorite author 👍🏻😘 1mo
TrishB Stacked. Not familiar with this author! 1mo
BarbaraBB Great review. Is it as good as 1mo
See All 16 Comments
JennyM @BarbaraBB I actually thought it was better, but in a quieter sort of way. How she manages to bring separate stories together amazes me! 1mo
JennyM @Cathythoughts @trishb I only just read her first novel and surprised she‘s not more popular. So glad you are enjoying American Wife, Cathy. It‘s a great story! X 1mo
BarbaraBB That‘s what I liked so much about her first book too. I must definitely read this one! 1mo
Kalalalatja I haven‘t heard of the author before, but definitely stacking! 1mo
Freespirit I don‘t know this author either. Hope you have a lovely Christmas Jen and try somehow to stay cool😍 1mo
JennyM @Freespirit you too, Sally! It‘s certainly going to be hot!!! 😘🎅🎄 1mo
JennyM @Kalalalatja she‘s only just new to me but she‘s very readable and I‘m surprised that she‘s not more widely popular. 1mo
CarolynM Merry Christmas, Jenny 😘🎄 1mo
JennyM @CarolynM hope you had a lovely Christmas Carolyn. 😘 1mo
Cinfhen Good to know!!! Happy Holidays 😘 1mo
JennyM @Cinfhen you, too Cindy! It‘s been busy - I‘ve hardly had time to read or Litsy! 😘😘😘 1mo
Tanisha_A Jennyyyyyy, happy happy new year to you and family! ❤️🎉 3w
JennyM @Tanisha_A happy new year to you too, T! Hope 2020 brings good things. Hope you‘ve had a good break from work with your family and friends. Much love 😘 xx 3w

The story of a fake heiress was apparently really what I needed to read right now, as I just about inhaled this! I‘m not one for celebrity and social scene news, so I had no idea about the case. However, it makes for compulsive reading and I have a sore neck from so much shaking of my head in disbelief! She was a con artist and sociopath, and the tale is fascinating!

Hooked_on_books I had a very similar reaction. I really enjoyed this one. 1mo
JennyM @Hooked_on_books yep...I was totally sucked in! 1mo
Buechersuechtling Never heard of this book. I love your picture. 😃 And your review sounds really interesting. 1mo
See All 11 Comments
JennyM @Buechersuechtling it‘s a bit of a crazy ride! How are you, Jessica? Been thinking of you. Hope things have eased a bit x 1mo
LeeRHarry Stacked ! 😊 1mo
CarolynM I've not heard of this either, but it sounds great. I'm stacking it too🙂 1mo
Buechersuechtling @JennyM That‘s so nice of you. Thank you. 🤗 My weekend was hard. I feel like most of my obligations are to much for me at the moment. I‘ve hugely been running out of energy, recently, so it‘s not just the physical pain caused by having too much to do , it‘s also that I‘m mentally drained. I can hardly concentrate and I sleep badly, so I know very well how urgent rest and recouping is. But step by step I will recover. It just takes time. 1mo
JennyM @CarolynM @leerharry it‘s not cutting edge investigative journalism, but something about it really hooked me and I binged! 1mo
JennyM @Buechersuechtling sending healthy wishes to you. Hoping it eases with time x 1mo
Suet624 It‘s actually kind of amazing how many people get away with stuff like this. 1mo
Cinfhen That was my exact reaction too!! Couldn‘t put the book down but it‘s not a great book😛 1mo

This week‘s #bookreport reading was pretty good....

A history of loneliness ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Loving Frank ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You belong here ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Looking for Alaska 🎧🎧🎧
I also watched 🎥 The remains of the day. I agree @Tamra it‘s as good, if not better, than the book!

My library holds #weeklyforecast is a bit of a mix, with a feel good about books, an interconnected story about 4 women in Vegas, and a fake heiress 👑

LeeRHarry Glad you enjoyed Loving Frank 😊 1mo
BarbaraBB I loved another book by McBride so I am looking forward to your thoughts on 1mo
Tamra 👏🏾💜 I‘m so glad you liked it! (edited) 1mo

Cinfhen Me too @BarbaraBB 😉😉can‘t wait to hear your thoughts, Jenny!!! And I really gobbled up the fake heiress story even though it‘s not a very worthy investigative story it‘s very compulsive 1mo
squirrelbrain Great week, and more great-sounding books coming up! 1mo
Centique Oh I‘m glad you said that about the movie, I have that on my list to watch soon 😍 1mo
JennyM @LeeRHarry I so did! Fascinating couple! 1mo
JennyM @BarbaraBB @cinfhen I read that one a few weeks ago and was really impressed at how she brought all the character‘s stories together. This one sounds similar so I‘m expecting good things 🤞 1mo
JennyM @Tamra it made for great viewing. And they were all so young, like 1994 young 😆 Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson looked so fresh faced! @Centique I got a copy from the library to watch...I think you‘ll enjoy it! (edited) 1mo
JennyM @Cinfhen and this one is definitely compulsive reading! I‘ve just had an hour to myself and I‘m already sucked in. Never heard of the case either. 1mo
Cinfhen I think the less you know about Anna, the more compelling the story becomes 1mo
JennyM @writerlibrarian there a lot of love for it. Great book! 😊 1mo

Family dysfunction, mental health, and trauma were all explored in this impactful piece of #ozfiction. I felt the big issues were realistically portrayed and I liked the hint of humour in how it was done. Having said that, however, I‘m still sort of left with a feeling of wanting more. The book was quite short, and maybe that‘s why, but I just didn‘t seem to connect to the characters as deeply as I wanted to.

JennyM @CarolynM I think we have the same take on it. @Rissreads @MrsMalaprop have either of you read this? It‘s set in Perth. 1mo
CarolynM Yes, I liked it, but I never felt fully engaged with the characters. It was good, but it could have been better. 1mo
JennyM @CarolynM completely agree. It could have gone much deeper - I wanted to know more about each of them. Thanks for the recommendation. I‘ll keep an eye out for any more by the author. 1mo
Rissreads No I have not read this but it's on my tbr list. I think I may have added it from when @CarolynM reviewed it. 1mo
MrsMalaprop No, I‘m not familiar with this one. 1mo

Cinfhen Well actually it‘s already on my TBR but now it‘s being moved up my find and read list ❤️thanks for sharing and I also really liked American Wife @merelybookish 1mo
Cinfhen A place for us is waiting to be read for #millennialAuthor #Booked2020 1mo

JennyM @valeriegeary I‘d love to see your faves. I bet you have some great ones on your list! 1mo
JennyM @Freespirit so many great books to choose from. Have you done your faves? I‘d love to see what you pick!! 1mo
Rissreads So many I have not read......yet. 1mo
Rissreads @JennyM Is this list ANY books you have read in the last 10 yrs or does it actually have to be books published in the last 10yrs also? 1mo
Kalalalatja I have read half of these, and they where all 5⭐️, 4 of them even made my list 🙌 1mo
Centique I‘m so glad to see A Place For Us! It was so beautiful and so subtly told. And now I have to read American Wife and The Ramblers. 😍 1mo
Cathythoughts Normal People was so good 👍🏻❤️great picks 1mo
Cathythoughts Stacking American Wife 👍🏻👍🏻 1mo
youneverarrived We have 2 the same ❤️ Normal People almost made my list too. 1mo

JennyM @Cathythoughts I think you‘ll enjoy it. Great book! 1mo
JennyM @youneverarrived soooo many to choose from, it was a challenge! Hope you are and bump are good x 1mo
Centique @JennyM it was near the middle of the North Island so we didn‘t feel it in Auckland. No damage anywhere though as far as the news websites I‘ve seen so thank goodness 🙏 Do you live close to the fire area in Aus? That‘s very worrying too. 💕💕 1mo
JennyM @Centique that‘s good to hear there was no damage. We aren‘t physically near the fires (we‘re in Brissie) but there has been a lot of smog since and temps are going to be crazy next week. It‘s going to be a long summer 😞🥵 1mo
valeriegeary @JennyM oh man....I just went through my list. I've only been tracking for 7 years but I can already tell it's going to be tough to choose! Do they also have to be published in the past decade? Or just our 10 best that we've read? 1mo
JennyM @valeriegeary it‘s hard isn‘t it?!?! It started out as those published in the last 10 years, but people have also gone with best read in the last 10 years. I say do whatever makes it easier for you!!!! 😊 1mo
Rissreads @JennyM I will work on my list today. 1mo
Rissreads @Centique I am off to Auckland for 2 weeks to see my daughter in January! Got any amazing/quirky book stores I should visit? ❤ 1mo
Centique @Rissreads oh gosh we are a little light on independent bookstores. Although I think @Lindy could have some recommendations from her last visit. I‘d recommend Unity Books in the central city for new books. For something quirkier I like Evergreen Books in Devonport (second hand books) Devonport is a lovely seaside village to wander around as well (short ferry ride from the city) 1mo
Centique @Rissreads I hope you enjoy your visit! Oh and I haven‘t been for years but Dear Reader in Grey Lynn used to be lovely. 😍 1mo
Lindy @Rissreads @Centique The Women‘s Bookshop in Ponsonby area has a well-curated selection. https://www.womensbookshop.co.nz 1mo
Rissreads Thank you both @Centique And @Lindy . Your recommendations will keep me busy! 1mo
Rissreads @Centique @Lindy any New Zealand books or authors you can recommend? I would like to read something fiction by a New Zealand author or a book set in Auckland or NZ. 1mo
Centique @Rissreads Umm theres Once Were Warriors or In My Fathers Den. Anything by Patricia Grace. If you like historical fiction I‘d recommend 1mo
Rissreads @Centique thanks, I will look them all up. I have seen the film of Once were warriors. 1mo
JennyM @Centique @Rissreads can I come with you?!?! This is making me want to visit NZ! 😘😘😘 1mo
Centique @JennyM @Rissreads yes do! And I‘m always keen for coffees and book chats and amateurish tour guiding as wanted 😊👍 1mo
JennyM @Centique @rissreads how fun would that be. Ah, one day 😀 1mo
Rissreads @Centique I would love to meet up with you for a drink and chat. ❤ 1mo
Suet624 Great list! I‘ve read a number of these and loved them as well. Took a snapshot of your photo so I can grab the two I haven‘t read. (edited) 1mo
BiblioLitten Wonder and John Boyne💙 1mo

Loving Frank: A Novel | Nancy Horan
post image

After putting this off for the whole of the year I can finally join in all the love and say, what a book! Detailing the scandalous relationship between architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his married client Mamah Borthwick Cheney, we come to know a woman making decisions and leading a life well ahead of her time in the early 1900s. I‘m surprised I don‘t know more about her, so down the🐰 🕳 I go!

Freespirit Sounds like a must read Jenny😍 1mo
JennyM @Freespirit it‘s what I think of as a rich and satisfying read. I wish I hadn‘t put it off for so long! 1mo
Cinfhen This is STILL on my list!!!!! Maybe 2020 will be the year I finally read it. 1mo
See All 13 Comments
JennyM @Cinfhen not what I expected at all and in a really good way. She was a courageous lady! Hope you enjoy when you get to it (edited) 1mo
Kalalalatja I can‘t believe that your posts about it is the first time I noticed it! I‘m definitely stacking it 📚 1mo
squirrelbrain What @Kalalalatja said - and I‘m also stacking! 1mo
JennyM @squirrelbrain @Kalalalatja I think it might have been the very wonderful @BarbaraBB who put it on my radar! 1mo
CarolynM I have it stacked already (maybe from @BarbaraBB too) but I'm bumping it up my priority list on your recommendation 🙂 1mo
AlaMich FLW was a fascinating man. I was lucky enough to visit Taliesin in Arizona and it‘s absolutely worth a visit if you‘re ever there. 1mo
BarbaraBB I don‘t know if it was me but I did read it and loved it! I mentioned recently (maybe to you) that I bought another book about FLW immediately afterwards. Haven‘t read it yet though. 1mo
JennyM @AlaMich I can imagine that being fantastic! Their story has really made me curious to know more about them both. 1mo
JennyM @BarbaraBB I will have to check this one out as well. Fascinating character. 1mo
JennyM @CarolynM hope you enjoy it Carolyn. It‘s quite a story! 1mo

This story is about the sexual abuse of children by the Catholic Church in Ireland so, for that reason, it will not be a book for everyone. However, I thought Boyne handled the subject with sensitivity and courage. He writes so beautifully💔

Tanisha_A Never read Boyne, he is super on my list. Ugh, time. 😭 Also, can I park myself in your chair for the rest of December? It's lovely! 2mo
JennyM @Tanisha_A he‘s really great, I have no doubt you‘d enjoy his books. And you can come and sit in my chair anytime. How is work...any relief from it in sight? Hope you are looking after yourself 😘😘😘 2mo
Tanisha_A @JennyM Hi love! Aw, you are the sweetest. I am definitely visiting Australia sometime, and i shall sit in that chair then. ❤️ Work is better now, waiting eagerly for 19th 'cause that's when i start my holiday which goes on till Jan 1st. Eeeee! 1mo

Plans for the #weeklyforecast ☝️

I‘ve been saying I‘ll read Loving Frank since January, but this week I WILL read it!

Have a good week everyone 📚

emilyhaldi Loving Frank is so good!!! 2mo
JennyM @emilyhaldi I‘ve had a weird resistance to reading it and have put it off all year! No idea why, as I only ever hear good things. 2mo
CarolynM I'll be interested to see what you think of You Belong Here. 2mo

Megabooks I‘m interested in your thoughts on Boyne‘s! 2mo
JennyM @CarolynM I got it out after your review - it sounds great! 2mo
Cinfhen Good luck with Frank 💚🍀I‘ve only heard good things 2mo
JennyM @Megabooks at halfway I‘m really enjoying it. Not my favourites by him but he tells a great tale, so it‘s still fantastic! (edited) 2mo
JennyM @Cinfhen thanks Cindy! Will be good to knock this off the pile. And even better if I enjoy it 😊 2mo
LeeRHarry I loved Loving Frank!!! Hope you do too 😊 2mo
Cinfhen I wasn‘t too Gaga over the Boyne ~ it was just ok for me. And I‘m not familiar with 2mo
BarbaraBB I loved Loving Frank too. So much that I bought another book about him but that has turned out to be one I have a weird resistance towards! 2mo
Kalalalatja I have never even heard of Loving Frank, but I‘ll look forward to your review! It sounds interesting 🤞 2mo
JennyM @LeeRHarry I know...so I‘m extremely hopeful as you know how synced we usually are 😘 2mo
LeeRHarry @JennyM 🤞😘 2mo
JennyM @Cinfhen it‘s not my favourite by him, but I do love his writing style, even though this is a tough subject 💔 The other is #ozfiction and one that @Carolynm recently read. (edited) 2mo
JennyM @BarbaraBB it‘s weird when we have these resistances to certain books. One thing that has put me off though is that the print in my copy is quite small and dense, so it is literally hard to read. I‘m really hoping I‘ll love it🤞 2mo
JennyM @Kalalalatja there is so much love for it. I‘m hoping I share some of it 😊 2mo
Cathythoughts Thanks! Have a good one you too 👍🏻❤️ 2mo

This week went according to plan, with four books read and one in progress. I loved three, particularly The Fragments. But I was surprised to really not enjoy The five people you meet in heaven. I adore Tuesdays with Morrie, but this was not that, and I was glad it was short so I could move on. Boyne is fantastic as usual... #Bookreport

TrishB Great week 👍🏻 2mo

This book was an absolute treat and one that I could have quoted from all day long! A literary mystery that flipped between two timelines, I found the storytelling clever and really well done. I also really appreciated the locally authentic descriptions of Brisbane, quirks and all, which just added to the experience. #ozfiction at its best!!!

post image

#Bookreport - finished the bottom three, as planned! All were 👍

#Weeklyforecast - starting the week with the recommendation by @BarbaraBB (We are called to rise). After that, it‘ll most probably be two from yesterday‘s library haul. I also have Looking for Alaska as my 🎧

CarolynM I liked The Fragments a lot. Looking forward to your review🙂 2mo
JennyM @CarolynM that‘s next one up I think. I‘ve only heard good things so I‘m looking forward to it. 2mo

JennyM @Cinfhen it was good but a bit predictable (edited) 2mo
Cinfhen Hmmmm, that‘s how I felt about her last book I read 2mo
CarolynM One of my book group friends, who I usually agree with, really disliked it, so you never know. Hope you will like it, though. 2mo
JennyM @Cinfhen I would say so. It was a good enough read and it kept me entertained, but I wasn‘t wowed 2mo
JennyM @CarolynM I read the first page last night and was pretty impressed so I‘m thinking I‘ll probably enjoy it. And it starts off in Brissie, so that always 👍 2mo
Cinfhen Now I‘m curious about the tagged book that you and @CarolynM are discussing!! More info please 😉 2mo
CarolynM @Cinfhen It's a kind of literary mystery about a lost manuscript, told over 2 time lines. As I said I really liked it, but my friend thought it was contrived and and not well written. 2mo
BarbaraBB Looking forward to your thoughts on We Are Called to Rise! 🤞🏼 2mo
Kalalalatja I‘m super interested in the Boyne book, so I‘m looking forward to your review! ☺️ 2mo
JennyM @BarbaraBB I‘m about halfway through and, while it‘s heartbreaking, I‘m enjoying it very much. 2mo
JennyM @Kalalalatja I‘ve been meaning to read this for a while - might roll over into next week, but it‘s on the bedside table, so I will get to it soon! 2mo

Crooked River: A Novel | Valerie Geary
post image

This was such a lovely, richly told story by the very talented @valeriegeary The sense of time and place was just perfect, and I felt deeply for the sisters, Sam and Ollie, as well as their recluse father, Bear. And bonus - I didn‘t see the ending coming, which had me flipping pages quickly and even shedding a tear at the very end. A book with heart and soul, and a few 🐝 and 👻 ❤️

Cathythoughts Lovely review!! Looking forward to this one 👍🏻❤️ 2mo

Stevens, the long-serving butler of an English country house, is given an unexpected #holiday. As he takes a trip through beautiful South-West England, and further away from the house and his duties, he begins to reflect on his life and the class and culture of a changing Britain.

The writing is just gorgeous and I‘m already hooked - I think I‘m going to love it. #movember @Cinfhen

Cathythoughts I‘ve only seen the movie ❤️❤️💔💔 2mo
Tamra I‘ve both read it and watched the movie countless times. As sacrilegious as it might be, I think the movie is better. Best two actors! So much is conveyed by body language alone. 💜 2mo

KarenUK @cinfhen 😘💕 @jennym so glad you are enjoying it....😊👍 2mo
Billypar Agreed with everyone else - I read this last year and loved it. The writing sucked me in right away, but the emotion building underneath the surface snuck up on me. Funny too- I thought Stevens' views on 'bantering' were hilarious (and as an awkward introvert, oddly relatable 😅) 2mo
sprainedbrain Great book! ❤️ 2mo
JennyM @Buechersuechtling @cinfhen @freespirit @karenuk @billypar @sprainedbrain it‘s fabulous and I can see why there‘s all the love for it. And it‘s just so British - I think Stevens might be related to some members of my family 😉 2mo

Crooked River: A Novel | Valerie Geary
post image

For this week‘s #bookreport, I read & enjoyed 3 books, particularly The Man Who Saw Everything. I also finished Girl, Woman, Other on audio, which was fantastic and definitely a winner for me.
My #weeklyforecast is a little quieter, as I have a busy week work-wise. But I‘m really excited to be reading Crooked River by our very own @valeriegeary . Then it‘s the Ishiguro rolling over from last week & The Confession for my commute 🎧

Kalalalatja Looks like a great week! 2mo

Hollywood Notebook | Wendy C. Ortiz
post image

These challenges are really not good for my TBR, because this sounds fascinating! I want to read it.

‘A prose poem-ish memoir of fragments where Ortiz takes us through the streets of LA and the internal maps she's charting as she moves from her twenties to her thirties in a studio apartment in #Hollywood. A cartography of love, loss, and transformation; it‘s a portrait of the author's psyche overlaid on a map of the city she makes her home.‘ GRs

Cinfhen Need to check out this book and yours @Megabooks xx 2mo
JennyM @Cinfhen you have to suspend belief a bit. And I don‘t know what @Megabooks thinks, but it felt a bit YAish to me. Don‘t think it is though, is it Meg? 2mo
Megabooks @JennyM @Cinfhen I think all the teen characters could push it YA, but I felt the use of the teacher (Ms Witt) to really drive the story put it adult for me. My meter for YA is “would I hand this to a parent friend of an 8th grader (13/14 yo) and say, ‘your kid would love this!‘?” The answer to that question about this book would be no. At least not around here. 2-0 adult 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
Cinfhen I like your barometer @Megabooks but I put YA at a higher age like 15-18 and that changes the perspective so I will adjust my expectations 😘 2mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen I put it lower because I think that most kids that read a lot are starting the YA books in middle school. Are there some that I still consider YA, that I might say, “give some guidance with this one (to a 13 yo).” Sure. But overall, I put the bar a little younger. 2mo
Cinfhen That‘s probably true @Megabooks voracious readers are reading YA in MiddleSchool but I‘m not sure authors are writing for that particular age group. It‘s hard to understand/ classify these genres (edited) 2mo
Cinfhen Books are for everyone and every reader!!!!! 2mo
JennyM @Megabooks @cinfhen so interesting to hear how you both gauge books. For me, it felt YA because of some of the themes (which I won‘t mention due to spoilers). But content wise I wouldn‘t give this to anyone under the age of at least 17. I‘ve googled, and I don‘t think it is classified as YA. 2mo
Cinfhen For me, if a book feels OVERLY DRAMATIC or OVERLY ANGSTY and it‘s filled with “ teen talk” I tend to classify it as YA 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen @JennyM I would say this is not that, Cindy! I agree there‘s different levels of YA. Like Julie Murphy‘s stuff I‘d definitely give to a middle schooler, but Emergency Contact is more 15+, but definitely angsty and romantic enough to be YA. Why is there always romance in YA????????? 2mo
Cinfhen I definitely have to read this now just to satisfy my curiosity @Megabooks @JennyM I did read and really like this book by Lisa Lutz 2mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen I liked The Passenger too. I own it and How to Start a Fire, and I liked them so much, I bought The Swallows on pub day. 👍🏻 I haven‘t read The Spellman Files series, though. I‘m generally not into series. 2mo

Fleishman Is in Trouble: A Novel | Taffy Brodesser-Akner
post image

Throughout this book, I constantly and fiercely flipped from loving it to hating it, and I very nearly bailed halfway. So I‘m really surprised to find myself saying this, but I think this might be one of the best books I‘ve read all year! The last 70 pages (Rachel‘s section) were phenomenal and I finally got it. It‘s layered, clever and really insightful. Highly recommend...even if I did spend most of my time eye rolling Fleishman!

Fleishman Is in Trouble: A Novel | Taffy Brodesser-Akner
post image

For this week‘s #bookreport, I finished Testaments on 🎧 and it ended up a so-so for me. I finished and enjoyed the new Sarah Bailey (an 🇦🇺 author) and am now in the middle of Fleishman and King. I‘ve put Fleishman down for a few days - it‘s just not pulling me in. BUT, all the 🌟 for King‘s writing memoir. Brilliant, funny and just what I need to get my creativity flowing as I finish a rather dull paper for work.

rachelk Yes! ‘On Writing: Memoir of the Craft‘ is brilliant! 3mo
JennyM @rachelk he is so smart and so funny! It‘s a fantastic read! 3mo
Cinfhen I‘ve heard others say that Fleishman is a tough start. I‘ll be curious to see if anything changes next week. Thanks for sharing your weekly reads!!!! 3mo

TrishB I might wait for Fleishman on a kindle deal. 3mo
JennyM @Cinfhen @trishb don‘t let me put you off cos it‘s probably more me than the book. But I do feel like I‘m reading something different to what‘s been hyped. I‘m not getting all the nuances or the characters at all...I‘m mainly doing a lot of eye rolling, so it‘s probably just me being a grump 😬 (edited) 3mo
JennyM @Hooked_on_books I wish I‘d read it years ago! 3mo
Cathythoughts I loved Fleishman... but I didn‘t have any preconceived idea of it ... & I missed the hype 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3mo
JennyM @Cathythoughts I‘m gonna give it another try in a day or too. You and I usually have similar taste in books, so you have me wanting to keep going. It hasn‘t helped reading it while being away and tired, so I do think my headspace is a factor in it. X 2mo

Advice from one of most #iconic writers of our time on how to #expressyourself. Bumped this up as my next read - I‘ve heard it‘s a little gem 💎 #movember

CarolynM 👏👏👏 3mo
TracyReadsBooks Love this book! It‘s an excellent read. 3mo
JennyM @CarolynM thank you! The book prompt fairies were looking over me when I packed this one for my work trip 🧚‍♀️ (edited) 3mo

JennyM @TracyReadsBooks if the foreword is anything to go by, I‘m in for a treat! 3mo
Cathythoughts In always hear great things about this book 👍🏻❤️ 3mo
JennyM @Cathythoughts Cathy, it‘s brilliant. I really think you‘d enjoy it. I imagine it being great on audio, as I believe Mr King narrates it himself 3mo

I‘m away with work for a few days, which means lots of time peopling and me generally finding myself #crave (ing) for quiet time with my book (which is very good after a not so sure start). But my room is lovely and, if you squint hard enough, you can see kangaroos sun-baking on the lawn past the water 🦘 #movember

squirrelbrain Ugh, peopling... looks a lovely place though! 3mo
Cinfhen that‘s pretty fantastic/ getting to see Kangaroos lounging in the sun!!! This book is HIGH up on my radar so I‘ll be very curious to see your review (edited) 3mo
JennyM @squirrelbrain it‘s tiring being sociable all day. And then it‘s drinks and dinner, and I just want my bed and book 😩 3mo
See All 24 Comments
JennyM @Cinfhen they are super friendly 🦘as well. The book is good, but it took me a little getting used to. It felt a bit contrived and gimeky for the first 50 pages. But then it seemed to settle, and now I‘m really enjoying it. I will be so interested to see how you find it. 3mo
TrishB Enjoy your break 😁 know that feeling! 3mo
Cathythoughts Lovely pic ! I hope you enjoy the book ... I really did. As for being sociable all day & THEN dinner & drinks .... I hear you. Some people thrive on it ... I‘m with you , I find it exhausting .. and over the years I‘ve got better at excusing myself early 👍❤️ 3mo
Lizpixie We stayed at a campground at Lake Conjola on the south coast of NSW a few years ago, the place was crawling with kangaroos, possums, birds, wallabies & wombats. They‘d come up to the tent looking for food with joeys hanging out their pouches.🦘 3mo
erzascarletbookgasm Ooo, 🦘 enjoying the sun! Looks like a lovely place. Hope you‘ll enjoy some quiet time in the night. 3mo
Tanisha_A Lovely view! Enjoy! ❤️ And, I want to read this too. 3mo
LapReader That looks like a place I stayed at in the Hunter. 3mo
batsy Boo to the constant peopling! But yay for this stunning view. Hope it's not too taxing and you get to enjoy 💛 3mo
LeeRHarry There‘s so much buzz about this book atm, hope you continue to enjoy it😊 3mo
Buechersuechtling @JennyM @Cathythoughts I perfectly understand what you‘re saying. I am so like-spirited. I don‘t like peopleing and I‘m not good at it, either. But please, Cathyhoughts, reveal some of ways of credibly excusing yourself, maybe I can use them also. I mean, what can one say: “Excuse me, I need some me-time for reading.” surely is no clever idea, is it❓ 3mo
JennyM @TrishB @Cathythoughts it‘s just so much hard work talking to people. Hats off to extroverts! And I seem to have found my groove with Fleishman now. No chapter headings, different narrators and lots of middle-aged man talk about porn threw me! But I‘m enjoying it now 😂 3mo
JennyM @Lizpixie @lapreader we‘re at Hope Island on the Goldie and there are kangaroos everywhere!! 3mo
JennyM @erzascarletbookgasm thanks Jessie. I‘m snuggled up now fully peopled out! X (edited) 3mo
JennyM @Tanisha_A @LeeRHarry thanks lovelies. This one is getting lots of hype - wasn‘t sure at first but I‘m into it now 😘 3mo
JennyM @batsy I knew my Litsy peeps would understand! Peopling is hard! 😘 3mo
JennyM @Buechersuechtling @Cathythoughts I‘m learning to stay for as long as I can and then excuse myself when I‘ve reached my peopling limit 😂. I‘m usually one of the first to leave but I think people do understand - they know I‘m quiet and there are always a few other introverts who will leave when you do. (edited) 3mo
Cathythoughts @Buechersuechtling @JennyM I don‘t have any magic wand excuse ... but there was a time I would have been afraid of drawing attention to myself or of being rude by leaving early .... now I feel stronger in myself & simply say goodnight & thanks! & I don‘t care if I‘m the first to leave anymore. I‘ll only end up wrecked & really stressed if I stay too late 🤷🏼‍♀️hope that‘s helpful ❤️ 3mo
Cathythoughts Re the book , I remember the middle aged men & the porn was annoying at the time. But the rest was so good , I kept on going. And I‘d forgotten all about that side of it till you mentioned it there 3mo
Buechersuechtling @JennyM @Cathythoughts Thanks for reminding me to stand up for my own well being. I think that counts as magic wand. ✨ 3mo
Itchyfeetreader This made me laugh. I have just unashamedly run away from a weekend with colleagues in the midst of 2 weeks of peopling and dived into this book! 3mo
JennyM @Itchyfeetreader hope you manage to sneak away as often as possible. I was only 3 days away and, man, I‘m so glad to be home!!! Peopling is hard!!😊 (edited) 3mo

#sorry (and sorry for the terrible 🎥 tie-in cover) #movember

erzascarletbookgasm This book ❤️💔. The cover‘s not that bad, some others are worse! 3mo
batsy It's OK, you never have to apologise for James McAvoy 😁😍😍 3mo
JennyM @erzascarletbookgasm @batsy lol...they just look so intense with their longing stares 😆 3mo
See All 22 Comments
Cinfhen Still on my TBR!!! And im agreeing with @erzascarletbookgasm @batsy cover isn‘t bad although I see what you mean about those angsty faces 3mo
Kalalalatja This is the movie that made me crush on James McAvoy 😍😍 but I‘m with you on the cover! 3mo
Cathythoughts Yes they do look intense ! I don‘t know what it is about Keira Knightly, but I can‘t take to her ..... I really want to read the book though (edited) 3mo
batsy @Cathythoughts I'm swooning over James' face, Cathy #shameless 😂 Agreed, I too can't quite warm to Keira ... Not sure why. The book is very good ❤️ I was so emotional by the end of it. 3mo
Centique @batsy *swooning here too* #synchronisedswooning Did you see him in Becomjng Jane? One of his earliest movies. Apparently not that accurate about Jane Austen but I didn‘t care cos I was in lurve..... Now I‘m going to have to go watch that again. 3mo
Centique And oh yes - what a book! One of the biggest emotional roller coasters ever, I totally loved it. 😍 3mo
batsy @Centique Yessssss! Swoon central! 😍 I have to say I loved the movie despite accuracy issues. And now I want to watch it again, as well 😂 3mo
batsy @Centique Also, that hashtag 🤣 3mo
JennyM @batsy @Kalalalatja @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm @Cinfhen @Centique so it looks like we‘re all team James, not so much Kiera! 😆 - it‘s a very good read though (edited) 3mo
batsy Apologies @JennyM for camping out in your comments to swoon over McAvoy 😂🙈 3mo
JennyM @batsy 😂😂😂 drool away, it‘s all part of the #synchronisedswooning 3mo
Tanisha_A Joining y'all in #syncronisedswooning. 🤤 And, I feel like watching the movie too @batsy and @Centique 😁. I think tonight 3mo
KarenUK Love this book and movie so much! And I love Keira! #teamkeira 😂 ... that green dress! That library scene! And #syncronisedswooning may be the best hashtag ever! @cinfhen @jennym 3mo
JennyM @Tanisha_A @karenuk love it! Hope you enjoyed rewatching the movie 🎥 3mo
Freespirit Another great book! 2mo
JennyM @Freespirit how are things looking with you, Sally today? Hope you are doing ok xx 2mo

Where the Dead Go | Sarah Bailey

My latest read has a #gonegirl theme, with the disappearance of a 15 year old girl and the murder of her boyfriend. Halfway through, I‘m liking it and have no clue who‘s done what or why🕵️‍♀️ #movember

Cinfhen Hmmmmm, sounds REALLY good!!! Is it YA?? I really liked Gone Girl but I find most books didn‘t really hold up to that comparison so I‘m intrigued by this one. 3mo
JennyM @Cinfhen not YA, but no way near as good as Gone Girl, although I am enjoying it. Very police procedural and it‘s also book 3 in a series, and I think you kinda need to read the others to get the main detective character 3mo
Cinfhen That‘s good to know!! I‘ll pass ~ thanks 😊 3mo

JennyM @Cinfhen and I see I‘ve missed half the prompt off #girlsgonewild and got it completely wrong 🤪 It‘s a Monday 🙄 (edited) 3mo
Cinfhen It works for me 🙌🏻🎉😊 3mo
Centique PS the fabric you‘re wearing looks gorgeous - makes a lovely photo! 3mo
JennyM @Centique thanks my lovely. It‘s my favourite long skirt - I just about live in it all summer 💐 3mo
Centique @JennyM it‘s gone from winter to summer in about 3 days here so I‘m currently trying to find enough summer clothes - and I‘m definitely envious of your skirt! 😍 Are you in Aus? 3mo
JennyM @Centique it‘s always so sudden the change in seasons. Although I‘m in Brissie so it does tend to just be varying degrees of hot 🥵 3mo

Top ones are my #bookreport for the week: enjoyed all the print books, particularly Lady in the Lake, which I didn‘t expect to as it‘s been getting mixed reviews. Still going with The Testaments on 🎧 but #unpopularopinion, if it wasn‘t an Atwood, I think I might have bailed 😬

Bottom ones are my #weeklyforecast. Tagged book is #3 in an Aussie cop series (Jane Harper-ish) & I CANNOT wait to get Fleishman that‘s waiting for me at the library!!!

Eggs 💗Lisa Jewell 3mo
JennyM @Eggs I really liked this latest one. Again, I‘ve seen mixed reviews, but I thought it was one of her better ones...couldn‘t put it down 😊 3mo
Cinfhen I liked Lady in the Lake and LOVED Bad Blood!! I‘m dying to read Fleishman but I‘m waiting for the paperback version available in April!!!!! 3mo

Cathythoughts I listened to The Testaments too. Not sure I could have read it. It‘s on for our Bookclub this Friday , so it will be interesting to hear what the ladies think. I did not think it a prize winning book. 3mo
JennyM @Cathythoughts I think watching the TV series has spoilt it for me. I feel I know where it‘s going. And I suspected I‘d feel like this - it has big shoes to fill 3mo
JennyM @Cinfhen I have high expectations for Fleishman! 3mo
Cinfhen I was VERY disappointed with 3mo
JennyM @Cinfhen I‘m definitely with you on that. 3mo
Cathythoughts I loved Fleishman 👍. I have Bad Blood on my kindle , but I‘m not inclined to read it 🤷🏼‍♀️... maybe I‘ll try soon 3mo
TrishB Fleishman only my radar at some point! Looks great. 3mo
JennyM @Cathythoughts @trishb I got very excited after your review, Cathy. Looking forward to getting my mitts on it 3mo

Cinfhen Or you could wait until #Booked2020 .... this would work for a prompt #SneakPeek 3mo
JennyM @Cinfhen oooo, happy days! My groaning end of year TBR says thank you! 😆 3mo
JennyM @Cathythoughts it‘s been one that I‘ve been meaning to get to...gets looks of praise 3mo
