The Bewitching is a Gothic within a Gothic within a Gothic—three timelines that interlock perfectly. Sinister, intricately plotted, and deeply unsettling, it blends witch folklore, dark academia, and mystery with real emotional weight. A beautifully constructed horror novel that reads effortlessly and stays with you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AnnCrystal I so badly wanted to read this, but a few reviews claimed it was triggering in a few ways. Did you find anything too difficult to digest??? 📚💝 5d
WanderingBookaneer @AnnCrystal : There are definitely moments that could be triggering for some readers, especially around abuse and power dynamics. For me, reading horror by a Hispanic author, I expect some of that horror to come from real-world abuses of power and systemic harm, so it lands differently than it might in other fiction. That awareness helped me contextualize those scenes, but it‘s worth going in prepared. 5d
AnnCrystal Thank You @WanderingBookaneer true, I've have come to expect this too (with books written by both Chicana and Native authors).

I'm such a coward that it makes it difficult...There have been some authors that I have learned to trust, who know how to write difficult subjects with respect to both their characters and their readers.

It's exciting that there is suddenly more choices in fantasy/horror being published by Latina and Native authors 📚💝.

This was a great book--4.5 ⭐'s. The only thing keeping it from a 5⭐ was the relationship between Alba and her uncle bothered me. I don't mind that it was there, but the graphic nature of it was a little much for me in terms of being open door.

Pretty good read ⭐ There were some parts that felt repetitive and Ngl, I didn't like one of the girls, but I thought the premise was interesting. A story about witches, superstitions, and vampire-like creatures. One part I did really like was that the contemporary MC wasn't forced into a relationship #queer

coffees TWs: relationship between uncle x niece, highly dubious consent, coerced/forced relationship, manipulation, murder 1mo

About halfway through this book and idk, it's not bad, but it's also not that good. I always end up getting her books, even when most tend to be 2.5~2.75 reads, idk, ig since she's the only fem Mx horror writer I know 😅 this book might also end up being a meh read, we'll see how it goes #amreading

This was a very entertaining gothic paranormal thriller. It follows three different timelines, and reading how they connect was very well done. However, the whodunnit portions of this book were very predictable. I guessed very early what was happening. I still enjoyed the journey overall. 4⭐️

I realized I never posted my reading bracket from October OR September! So here we are. Some tough choices as I've read some great books. The World We Make is my latest quarter finalist, honestly the audio production pushed that one to the top. And for October I chose the Bewitching, great atmospheric story perfect for spooky season.

I really enjoyed this multigenerational story about witchcraft, even if a lot of it was predictable. The multiple storylines were laced together pretty tightly, though I wish they slightly differed just to not have it as predictable as the overall story was, but it worked for what it was trying to accomplish. Alba's POV was by far my favorite, but at the same time, it felt the most fleshed out of the three.

Doppoetry The villains were despicable, though some were stronger and a lot more interesting than the others, motivation-wise. 2mo
Doppoetry I wasn't an adult in the '90s, so I can't really say how open college kids were in terms of their sexuality, but I can't imagine it was as acceptable as it is today, so I had to wonder. It was still nice to have openly LGBTQA+ characters. 2mo

I really liked this author's writing style and her voice. This book had a wonderfully spooky atmosphere for Halloween, and the setting was perfect. I did find it a little slow and tedious in some parts, and I was not surprised by anything at the end. Also, some stuff was just gross, and that's not meant in a gory way.

AnnCrystal 📚👏🏼🤩👍🏼💝 this one caught my attention. Haven't purchased, it's on my (very long) TBR. (edited) 2mo

I thought the blending of Mexican with European/American witchcraft folklore was cool. The story dragged for me at times, but it had great vibes for this time of the year. 🎧

I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book! I read it for a book club but I might explore more of this author's work now. It follows the stories of three women from different time periods (1908, 1934, & 1998) who have encounters with evil witches. The world building was great, I loved the interconnection and overarching themes of the three stories. The audiobook was very well done, the narrator made each time period feel distinct.

Kenyazero I‘ve heard of this one, looks like it‘s a good read! 3mo
KT1432 I‘m really excited about this. I loved Mexican Gothic (it‘s not for everyone though), and I‘m currently reading a vampire story by her that went out of print for a while, Certain Dark Things, and I‘m really enjoying it too. I think she may be a pretty consistent author for me. 🙂 3mo

I don‘t usually read seasonally books but if you do this is perfect for Oct. I do always enjoy a generational saga, witch (misspelling intentional 🧙🏾‍♀️) this book is. This is my favorite of the books I have read so far by this author. Engaging, fun, and a great escape.

I reaaally enjoyed the main story plot but there‘s so much that didn‘t need to happen.. iykyk 😅 It was also SO predictable to me that I was hoping for some big twist that never came. I wanted to give it a higher rating but since I can‘t see myself recommending it, I just couldn‘t do it..

While this wasn‘t my favorite from this author, it was still very good. There were slower parts in the middle but it picked up again. This story follows three MCs and goes back and forth to their different times, with the “present day” being 1998. There‘s an eerie, witchy feel to it and plenty of mysterious events. Each MC has a mystery to solve with the three connecting in the end. The characters were well written and there was so much intrigue.

jen_the_scribe Also, the narrator was fantastic! 4mo

New listen while I hop on the treadmill and cook dinner. It‘s been way too hot to walk outside lately but a good audiobook helps make the treadmill less dull.

Miranda is writing her thesis on Beatrice Tremblay, a little known horror author whose novel was based on the disappearance of her college roommate in the 1930s. As she digs deeper, parallels arise with the stories her great-grandmother, Nana Alba, told her in Mexico. A tense, gripping tale of witchcraft and survival, told in three alternating timelines. And what a beautiful cover!

I liked how there was a mysterious vanishing in each timeline, but it didn't grab me and keep me there. The writing was good, but there were unanswered questions at the end.

Thank You @TheSpineView for creating this fun play-card & for the tag 💕🐎📚.

1- Haven't preordered in years. Just tried returning to mail ordering books, but waiting for their safe delivery drove me crazy 😂. While I WAS tempted to preorder the tagged book...I'm just going back to keeping a lookout for books wherever I may find them. Do miss having a bookstore, I use to have books preordered/ordered and held for me all the time.

2- back when I did preorder, it would be by series first, then by favorite writers.
