On the heels of completing Sense and Sensibility, Jane heads to Sloane Street for a monthlong visit with her brother Henry and his wife, Eliza. Hobnobbing with the Fashionable Great at the height of the Season, Jane is well aware of their secrets and peccadilloes. But even she is surprised when the intimate correspondence between a Russian princess and a prominent Tory minister is published in the papers for all to see. More shocking, the disgraced beauty is soon found with her throat slit on Lord Castlereaghs very doorstep. Everyone whos anyone in high society is certain the spurned princess committed the violence upon herself. But Jane is unconvinced. Nor does she believe the minister guilty of so grisly and public a crime. Barron is just sucking me right in with these mysteries now! I loved spending time with Eliza & Henry again and I‘m hoping Chizzlewit shows up in future books. The mystery in this one was quite good, I think it‘s one of the better constructed stories.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ That this story was a bit darker. While we know that women were at the mercy of men, Julia Radcliffe's story really showed how bad if could be.
2️⃣ I wasn't liking Eliza at the first of the story with her lack of common sense and getting huffy at Jane but she totally redeemed herself at the end. Loved that she was just drinking champagne and dancing the night away and then, tumbled to the truth. 12mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣"One should always have a decorative young man about the room, and well- bred if one may contrive it; it lends so much tone to the display."

"Had Willoughby been short, fat, and ill- favoured, Marianne would rather have limped home." 12mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ I would struggle with being respectable in Jane's time. I'd be a little too loud. Anti-Almacks would be a better fit personality wise. I'm one you always know what I'm thinking so mask would be good. Plus I could paint my toenails gold. I hate not having polish on my toes.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ “Sandals, I think— and we shall paint your toe- nails with gold leaf, as it is considered very fast." I thought painting toenails was a modern thing. Google it. It's fascinating.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ Even though I read this back in #JaneAndTheYear2020 I had forgotten the meaning of Braque of Frailty. And that there were so many euphemisms: The Muslin Company...."but the present age held such women in something like admiration, as might be divined from the euphemisms commonly applied to them: High Flyers, Fair Cyprians, Birds of Paradise, Snug Armfuls, Barques of Frailty, Demi-reps."⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Enjoyed that story takes place at the end of April 1811 and that I was reading in April. That's always fun. Also that we are to Jane's books being published.

#9 in this series. I found myself rather confused at times regarding the mystery/ murder, but the scenes of London, dress balls,& her sister Eliza‘s vapors & shenanigans entertained me. #janeandtheexcellentreadalong #serieslove2023

I picked this up at a thrift store, seemed like a fun, light read with Jane Austen as sleuth. But, I only made it through the first 50 pages. I was enjoying the Austen-like time period and style, but it just wasn't keeping my interest.
