It is where you go when you need maximum force and maximum discretion. The secrets of the most influential men and women on the planet come to Jack daily--and his staff of investigators uses the world's most advanced forensic tools to make and break their cases. The press will destroy you Jack is already deep into the investigation of a multi-million dollar NFL gambling scandal and the unsolved slayings of 18 schoolgirls when he learns of a horrific murder close to home: his best friend's wife, Jack's former lover, has been killed. It nearly pushes him over the edge. Instead, Jack pushes back and devotes all of Private's resources to tracking down her killer. Only one place to turn: Private But Jack doesn't have to play by the rules. As he closes in on the killer and chooses between revenge and justice, Morgan has to navigate a workplace love affair that threatens to blow the roof off his plans. I have read a few books of the private series and wanted to read the #1, from where it all began and to be honest I was disappointed. The story lacks a lot of detail, no depth to anyone, jumbling between 3 cases becomes idiotic and the length of the chapters is simply horrendous. There are two chapter whose lengths are one single page.
I had read the other parts like 4-5 years ago maybe that's why they looked promising.
Overall 2/5⭐

So first fay of #NutsInMay Read 108/1000.
If i can read this much everyday 1000 pages would seem easy and who knows might strech it 1500.

Knowing how successful the author is I had high hopes. This was my first foray into Patterson‘s work and I will need a strong recommendation on what to read next to give him another chance. It was OK. The chapters were alarmingly short and it flitted around too much at the start for my tastes. A little fanciful and perhaps aimed at the casual reader to bash through on holiday rather than for a serious reader to absorb themselves in.

I liked this one. It was my first Patterson and it won‘t be my last. There were portions of the story that weren‘t needed but I suppose they added to the suspense of the story, another layer of tension.

Started this one today. Not terrible. It is my first Patterson, haven‘t decided if it‘s my last.
I really wish I had my headphones 🎧 since I got dragged to a high school basketball 🏀 game tonight.

Swing and a miss.

I had a feeling when I first started Private about investigator Jack Morgan, I probably would not become very attached to this one.

And unfortunately I was right.

The plot line never picked up speed for me, and for some reason was somewhat hard to follow. No real likable characters, and I was kind of left feeling blah at the ending.

I‘ll try another James Patterson book one day.

MariettaSG Good to know not to read it. 4y
KristenDuck @MariettaSG I wouldn‘t recommend it 4y
ncayea I dont prefer this series either. But try Private: India, I liked that one 🤷‍♀️ 4y

This had so many plots to follow, and I didn‘t enjoy all of them. A couple of them were really good, but that doesn‘t seem enough to justify a pick for me. The book centers on a firm of private investigators and the cases they are working on. The main character was interesting, but I was unhappy with his character arc at the end. I don‘t think I will read any more of this series.

So stinking good! First book of a new James Patterson series and I highly enjoyed it! I love the short chapters as it allows a fast pace to be maintained. It‘s my own fault I didn‘t read it faster! I loved how he had multiple mysteries in one book, I especially loved the NFL angle!

This goes in the "at least it was free" category. It's not that I didn't like this book, but I was so confused with all the different plot lines that I'm still trying to find my way out of this crazy mess. I could have read a book about any one of the plots, but having them scrambled together just did not work for me. I'm not sure Continue with this series.

This wasn't great... but... it was an Audible freebie, and it was OK for a weekend where I didn't want to think much. I also picked up two more in the series today at the library.

Okay for free. Peter Hermann did an okay job narrating. It fit the book. Not a huge Patterson fan, but it was an easy book that required little of me. Sometimes you need that.

Probably finished this since it was audio and I could do other things while listening. Pretty predictable, but fun at times. Won't be trying any more of this series, but maybe I'll try the Alex Cross ones.

Despite writing mysteries myself (YA), I haven't read a lot of James Patterson. He's a master, so there is a lot to learn here. While I enjoyed the plot & some minor characters, like the Irish girlfriend, I wasn't crazy about 3 mysteries going on at the same time. It didn't allow me to feel invested in any of them. Overall, I enjoyed the story, but felt more attention could have been put on the artistry and language.

"I took the off-ramp at Carrillo Street in Santa Barbara and got back on the 101, this time heading south back toward LA."

Not to criticize a master like James Patterson, but there are so many references to directions around Los Angeles, that I'm starting to feel like I'm reading an SNL version of the "Californians."

I am about 60,000 words into Book 3 of the Anastasia Phoenix series, and when I am writing, I exclusively only read books in the same genre. Anastasia Phoenix is a trilogy of thrillers, so I'm reading James Patterson, king of thrillers.

From PRIVATE: "Sometimes I tried to reason and said calmly, 'Just tell me what you want.' This morning when the voice said, "You're dead, 'I said "Not yet.' I snapped the phone closed."

This book was one of those that seemed way too busy. Especially, just listening to the story without being able to easily flip back through pages. I was worried that, with three different investigations plus character development, that I would be lost at times, but it never happened. I really enjoyed listening to this book, and can't wait to start the next one. 😁

I've decided to start this James Patterson series on an Audiobook. So far, I'm enjoying it. The quote in the picture is the first line of this book. 😁
