A Game of You isn‘t my favorite volume in this series, but it does play an important role in the overall story arc. Even though this is a bit of a standalone in some ways, and Dream and the endless aren‘t featured much, in other ways this is the volume where the more disparate threads of this world start to come together and you really feel like you‘ve found your footing within the larger story.
This comic was written in the early 90‘s and I don‘t think it gets enough credit for that. I really hope we get to see Wanda again. I loved this little group of humans and the importance of found family. I loved Wanda for her strength, sass, and her vulnerability. At one point, I was a smidge bored with Barbie‘s dream world, but not so much that I wanted to quit reading. It‘s not the main plot, but we do see some of Morpheus‘ power at the end.
This is probably my least favorite Sandman so far. I'm still giving it 3 stars because the story was great just a few things in it were very disturbing. This book has just one story about Barbie who left Ken and is still messed up with her dreams. My favorite character was Thessaly, I absolutely adore her! A lot of strange things happen in this book.
As a kid Barbie created a land in her dreams, and now that dreamland is entering into the real world.
I was pleasantly surprised by the representation in this one, with a trans person and same sex relationship.
It also touches on unwanted pregnancy.
3rd book finished #SuperSeptember
I‘ve been enjoying going through all of the Sandman comics and so far I‘m up to volume 5, A Game of You.
Every volume has its own flavor of stories, all connected to the Sandman, the King of Dreams. This one is more loosely connected since he only shows up towards the end.
It‘s mainly a hero‘s journey filled with magical elements, and discusses identity and personal choice vs ancient ways. All told through a wide array of female characters.
Eh this was okay. Not my favorite in the series. A side character from one of the previous volumes is the main character in this one and there‘s very little of the Dream King. The storyline was confusing and characters that I felt I should know and remember I don‘t so this left me feeling really confused and frustrated. Still going to continue on though. Hopefully the next volume is better. #Scarathlon2020 #TeamSlaughter #OutstandingOctober
I'm loving how all the puzzle pieces is coming together. I can see that I will have to re-read the series again after finishing it to truly appreciate its beauty.
This volume made me realise that things that I dismissed or disliked in previous volumes is of greater importance.
It is one of those series that you only really cherish every bit of on the second read through
And truly falls in love with on the third and millionth read.
I read this age 18 and it was the first thing I‘d ever read with a trans character. Rereading it I see why there‘s criticism of how Wanda was written - she‘s treated like shit by almost everyone then she dies - but I love her as much as I did when I was a teen. She deserved better, and I prefer the ending I made up where she survived and becomes a witch, but this was such an important book for me and Wanda is one of my favourite characters ever.
This one was a bit of a diversion from the plot, into the world of one character‘s, Barbie‘s, dreams which were coming into fruition in the real world. Not a lot of Dream & Death in this one, but they do make appearances. While a bit different, it was still very enjoyable.
I remember of having that EXACT fantasy when I was little 😂
Slowly making my way through this series. Thoroughly enjoying each volume. #currentlyreading #graphicnovel
Really enjoyed this volume focused on Barbie. A nice character arc for her with minimal participation of Morpheus. On to the next in the series.
Poignant.
My favorite in the series so far. The story of Princess Barbara and the small kingdom of dreams she rules over. That kingdom is being threatened by The Cuckoo. I liked the telling of the tale alternating between the kingdom and what is happening on earth. There are a bunch of cool characters in here, and not all of them get out alive.
A GAME OF YOU skirts so close to the Death of Magic--my least favourite trope--that you could argue it embodies it. Many people do, making this one of the series' least popular storylines.
Personally, I've always seen it as the Transformation of Magic; a trope I'm down for, painful though it is. That crucial difference helps me love this volume, though it still contains some deeply disappointing and harmful rep on other fronts. 👇
Because I need more books to read... I'm totally being sarcastic but I do want to read this.
Alvin realized she was meant to be Wanda, but when she passed away her family refused to recognize that. Barbie knows how important it is to #beyourself

George is that stereotypical #creep in the apartment building. He does all the usual creepy stuff. He won't talk to you when he meets you on the stairs. He turns the TV up too loud. At night he releases birds from his ribcage to give you bad dreams. You know, the usual stuff. #RockinMay
A Game of You is many people's least favorite Sandman story arch, but I think it is probably my favorite. This scene shows Thessaly, Hazel, and Foxglove walking the Moon's road to find Barbie.
Not exactly #walkingontheMoon but close enough. #RockinMay
I thought a lot about #diverselovestories for #feistyfeb Books have been such a huge part of broadening my horizons when it comes to diversity. Growing up in the rural South, Hazel and Foxglove were the first lesbian couple I ever met, and their neighbor Wanda was the first trans person I ever knew. I loved them, and they were people, and that altered my view of the world for the better.
#Bookface #day3. I love it when a great cover goes with great book. #graphicnovel #readjanuary
I like that this series keeps bringing back side characters and giving them their own story. The end, though...why did it have to end on that note? Good, but sad. Now on to the next one.
Finally dipped my toe into reading this series and I'm loving every bit of it. It's one of those graphic novels that make you look into yourself for what disturbs you, and question your own ideals. Can't wait to read the rest.
I very much liked this series. Got me started on exploring comics.
Wanda is my real name, Barbie-baby, Alvin's just the name I was born with
