Libby Miller has always been an unwavering optimist--but when her husband drops a bomb on their marriage the same day a doctor delivers devastating news, she realizes her rose-colored glasses have actually been blinding her. With nothing left to lose, she abandons her life in Chicago for the clear waters and bright beaches of the Caribbean for what might be her last hurrah. Despite her new sunny locale, her plans go awry when she finds that she can't quite outrun the past or bring herself to face an unknowable future. Every day of tropical bliss may be an invitation to disaster, but with her twin brother on her trail and a new relationship on the horizon, Libby is determined to forget about fate. Will she risk it all to live--and love--a little longer? From critically acclaimed author Camille Pagn comes a hilarious and hopeful story about a woman choosing between a "perfect" life and actually living.

Enjoyed this one! Libby gets a cancer diagnosis the same day that her husband comes out to her. With her life completely upended, she takes off to Puerto Rico to get away from everything and to think about her next steps. I was rooting for Libby the whole time. This was a quick read with some awesome supporting characters!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 this one was sweet and hopeful, as most of Camille Pagan‘s novels turn out to be.

I have been working my way through Camille Pagán's books--many of them are available on Kindle Unlimited, so I love the chance to move between the e- and audiobooks with WhisperSync. Repeat audiobook reader Amy McFadden is fabulous, and her reading of Life and Other Near-Death Experiences is, once again, excellent. This novel begins on the day that Libby Miller discovers (1) she has terminal cancer and (2) her long-time husband Tom is gay. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod She hasn't had the chance to tell anyone about her diagnosis, and after her husband reveals his truth, she decides that she's not going to. Libby had watched her mother die after suffering through cancer treatment, and she resolves not to go through a treatment that won't change the outcome. ⠀

Instead, she unloads everything--she quits the job that makes her miserable, sells the house that she paid for almost single handedly, ⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod and buys a ticket to fly to Mexico, where she and Tom had their honeymoon, in an attempt to recapture the happiness she felt there. The rest of the book shares Libby's memories, her regrets, and her continued denial of her need to share her news with anyone. ⠀

This book is compelling enough, but it's definitely not my favorite book by Pagán. I think part of that may be the trope of not sharing a secret--⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod I became impatient and just wanted Libby to tell her twin brother and her father (and even Tom!) what was going on with her. ⠀

Do you like switching between print and audio? What book(s) are you hoping to finish in May?

A story about a woman who goes to Puerto Rico after suddenly being diagnosed with a terminal illness. She's running away from the problem instead of trying to treat and combat it. The ending was predictable, in my opinion.

I hated this in the beginning and almost bailed but I am glad I stuck with it. For such a heavy premise ( a woman‘s marriage implodes the same day she receives a cancer diagnosis) it is a surprisingly light read. There is not a lot of depth here but I became absorbed in the story and it was a quick read. Not life changing but worth the couple of hours I spent reading it.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Jennifer, have you ever read anything by Greg Iles? He‘s got a new one out and I wondered if you might like him?! 😘😘 5y
Jas16 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I have read anything of his and don‘t read a lot of mystery/thrillers to be honest but if he is someone you think I should I try I will 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Jas16 you probably wouldn‘t like him if you don‘t like mysteries/thrillers! How are you? Is your tbr list caught up btw? Asking for a friend 😉 5y

I shoulda read this AFTER A Small Revolution, but what did I know?🤷🏻‍♀️
This is light, & can veer on schmaltzy.
But it won me over 🙂
It‘s short, it‘s fun, it‘s feel-good ~ more or less. A great book for a readathon, or travel, just for fun.

I enjoyed this light hearted(?) look at grief. Old grief, new grief all kinds of grief.. should of been a downer of a read but the author wrote it through the eyes of a awakened sarcastic mc and I liked her spunk immediately ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

britt_brooke I liked this one, too! 6y

This book was really great! I loved the characters and the story line and it was definitely not what I expected it to be. It was just a really fun and nice book about what to do when life hands you the sourest lemons.

"It‘s permanence that distinguishes grief from other emotional pain. The unfixable nature of never—that‘s what makes it so terrible to bear."

This isn't a light and happy book, but it could of been worse! This is the second book I've read dealing with the idea of/or the actuality of dying. I think I will read something a bit more uplifting next!

This book gets mixed reviews but I liked it. And a big part of it is set on an island off Puerto Rico. Considering the theme (life, illness, death), it's a fairly lighthearted read. The MC is annoying at first but I thought she matured and grew through her experiences. #bookssetbythesea #septphotochallenge #somethinfgforsept

raelaschoenherr I liked this one! She balanced the heaviness with lightness well. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @raelaschoenherr I agree. For me the best part and the worst part was the main character. She was so frustrating, but at some point I started rooting for her and even liking her. I loved that! 8y
raelaschoenherr @BarbaraTheBibliophage Always fun to have a character grow on you! 8y
cajunsyd I agree with all of your comments. I did not like the main character much at the beginning but she grew on me. Overall, the book was just ok for me. I felt that at times it was very cliched and not super-creative. But I enjoyed it enough to want to read the outcome of her situation. On to the next one! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @cajunsyd Sometimes it's okay to have a medium good book. They go fast and then we move forward, like you said. 😎 7y

I went into this looking for something to wrap me up and whisk me away to another place. This just wasn't the book to do it. Someone looking for a beach-y read might really enjoy this one. It missed the mark for me.

Listened to this at 1.5x speed cuz narrator was annoying. And main character was irritating. Not a lot of depth to the story, which doesn't usually bother me if there's likeable characters. Kept listening cuz I wanted to know how it would end. Epilogue was prob best part. Wonder how much better it would've been had narrator not sounded like she was forcing herself to like the story?🤔

Megabooks I got this for free. It keeps getting pushed back on my TBR. Glad to know that's ok! 8y

Starting the audiobook today since I'm stuck in traffic on my way home from work. Although I'm less than five minutes in and I do NOT enjoy the voice of the reader. Sounds like a robot.

OneLitChick Boo! Is it audible? You can return it for a credit... 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I read the ebook for this one. It took me awhile to appreciate the MC. Of course, that's completely different from an annoying actual voice! 8y
