The Magician's Lie | Greer Macallister
94 posts | 89 read | 140 to read
The Amazing Arden is the most notorious female illusionist of her day, renowned for sawing a man in half. One night, with policeman Virgil Holt in the audience, she swaps her saw for a fire axe. A new trick or an all-too-real murder? When a dead body is discovered, the answer seems clear. But under Holt's interrogation what Arden's story reveals is both unbelievable and spellbinding.

So proud of this #library, celebrating a grand opening after outgrowing their old digs where my children enjoyed so many hours. Loved this book set in this #smalltown. MC recalls working at the Biltmore: Books. Shelves of them, walls of them. . . I wanted to run my fingers along the endless series of spines . . . and inhale until I was drunk on the smell of old paper. “All the books anyone could ever want,” he said. . . . For anyone to read."

How was this book so good. I felt almost constant suspense but it was also a sort of nice meandering tale. Really loved it, this is exactly the kind of thing I like to sink into in the winter.

I absolutely LOVED this novel. It was enchanting, dark, alluring and clever. Set during the turn of the century this is spellbinding mystery; did Arden a famed illusionist kill her husband or is she an innocent victim? She has only a few hours to tell her tale & seal her fate.

I enjoyed it, but wasn‘t crazy about the end. I really liked the setting and the atmosphere. I also love the cover. There was an interview with the author at the end of my copy; I had been wondering as I read, and it was confirmed, that Arden‘s magician mentor in the story was a real woman. There really weren‘t many women illusionists at the time. One of the events near the end of the story (a fire at a theatre in Chicago) also really happened

I greatly respect this author‘s talent with word use. She certainly crafts them into beautiful phrases. But I felt the story was solely surface beauty. Its hollow interior quickly collapsed.

A man is dead and an illusionist is suspected. She tells her story, allowing the reader to decide if she is truthful. There was one plot point that seemed a little too convenient, but overall I quite enjoyed this one. Great setting (late 1800s-early 1900s).

This book ticks a lot of boxes that I like to have ticked: historical fiction, trains, magic that may be real, mystery, just the right amount of romance... so naturally I enjoyed it. The writing was ok, and the story moves along nicely. A good fun read.

Also, I accidentally got a large print edition from ThriftBooks... that started out annoying, but by the end I was really liking it. I guess I‘m of that age now? 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

I‘m struggling through the middle of this book.. I‘m 165 pages in and feel like it‘s too late to bail, but I‘m really not caring about Arden‘s backstory.

I was enjoying this book at the beginning, but now I‘m not feeling it.

However, I feel like I‘ve been bailing on a lot of books lately and wondering if this gets better and if it‘s worth the read?

MidnightBookGirl I listened to this on audio and the narration was great... but I know that there are some books I would have bailed on otherwise. We read this for book club and it made for a great discussion. However, if it's not working for you, drop it! 6y

This was a good group for book club, but I humbly suggest your group not doing all 25 discussion questions. 10 is plenty. I do appreciate that they were provided.

The violence level may be a bit much for some readers. This book is intense. Reading a story about a female magician in the golden age of magic was enlightening. Recommend.
