I had no idea what to expect when I started this - or if I did, I was totally caught off guard when it veered in another direction. Amazing slow burn mystery, damaged characters, idyllic setting, atmospheric writing. Really loved it once I got past the first few chapters. This counts for #booked2022 #aboutacult and is also my #bookspin! 😊😊

We made it home in time to be with #Isabel. Her pain meds help, but it‘s apparent that the fluid in her lungs is getting worse. She heads to the vet for the final time at 3pm.

While I wait with her, I thought I‘d review Cultish, a fascinating look at the language surrounding fanaticism. I loved the broad focus on how cultish language & traits appear (to varying degrees))in fitness & wellness programs, social media influencers, and #BossBabe MLMs.

As a lover of horror, I‘m a little ashamed to say this my first Adam Neville read. Even though I think this could have been trimmed down slightly (it‘s 530 pgs), I enjoyed this one. Kyle, a struggling film documentarian, thinks his problems may have been solved when he is asked to shoot a documentary about the 1970s notorious cult, Temple of the Last Days. The film schedule is tight and strange things occur as Kyle and his ⬇️

I love memoirs and the perspective I gain from reading them. I don‘t like to rate someone‘s personal experience, but in this case it‘s more the format and structure of the book that didn‘t work for me. I listened to the audiobook which had a pleasant sounding narrator, even when describing horrific situations in the book. I‘m proud of Faith Jones for overcoming her impossible childhood but I don‘t think I can recommend this book.

I‘ve been waiting eagerly for my audible credit to come so I can get this book on the go. It will be my #booked2022 #aboutacult book.

This was not an easy read. Interestingly written, with 2 main characters & a 3rd relevant, but not prominent one, & constant switches between 1st/3rd person. A former evangelical (Will) who has lost his faith and found obsession with his first girlfriend, Phoebe, who herself is gradually falling in to a religious/terrorist cult lead by John. I was fascinated by these people that I didn‘t like at all.

Dark, sad, trigger-loaded, sublime.
