This was my first of Bernard Cornwell. It wasn't the greatest book, so I'm told, so I'll look for some others of his to enjoy. I was expecting more historical fiction rather than fantasy, and it took a while to really get into it because of all the dealings in war & with the gods. It, overall, was good but kind of so-so. I'll donate this to my little free library.
#5joysFriday Thanks @DebinHawaii for the tag!
1) visiting my father-in-law in Reading, England
2) seeing Stonehenge!
3) visiting the Roman Baths
4) visiting FANTASTIC bookstores and literary sites in Bath, England
5) touring Arsenal‘s football stadium in London
So many more things that brought me joy this week! Tonight we arrived in Dublin, so I‘ll have to add our time in Ireland to next week‘s joys!
I can‘t believe I got to see it in real life!!
And I loved the tagged book. Read it years ago. Prompting a huge desire to see it in real life.
My next 4 books for #52bookclub24
I read book 12 of the Saxon Tales for a smelly book - lots of smells, especially in the London scenes.
Wide Sargasso Sea was kind of interesting but also difficult to read and overall a disappointment for me.
The Jókai book was full of twists and turns, I enjoyed it immensely (title translates roughly as Soul Tamer)
The Little Sister didn't quite hold my attention, but I guess I picked it up at a wrong time.
Finally, Uhtred can focus on what he really wants, Bebbanburg.
This is the tenth book in the series, but it's still exciting. I appreciated how subtly Cornwell made Uhtred's age felt. He's not as young as he once was, and while he can still outsmart pretty much everyone around, he's not always in the forefront of the events, and he lets his son do some of the more difficult actions.
I can't wait to find out what happens to him next.
Some of the twists I saw coming, but it was still a very enjoyable read. I loved the character interactions, the humour, and the battle scenes were brilliantly described again. I look forward to the next installment of the series.
#12 of 13. This was good; one of my favourites. It has a shorter time frame and moves faster as a result. Uhltred and Finan are getting old, but still they rise, they out-think, and with fierce loyalty and astonishing luck, they win their battles. So glad I found this series. Uhltred and Finan will be two characters I will not forget. 4/5
Uhtred is now back and master of Bebbanburg and his life‘s dream and wish has been achieved. This is book 10 of 13 and I am intrigued how Uhtred will fare, what challenges will be faced. Four more books in this series suggests that there must be. Cannot wait!
After. My impromptu visit to the British Museum, and my wander around the Stonehenge exhibition, this got my blood up! Although not my favorite Cornwell novel, he again creates these rouguish characters readers cannot help but root for the whole way through. If you love prehistory, battles and violence then I would recommend this one to you!
