Sword of Kings: A Novel | Bernard Cornwell
10 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
The Last Kingdom series goes from strength to strength with Uhtred becoming ever more interesting - in so many ways a modern hero, facing a new world, with changing allegiances, but still held by traditional loyalties.

My next 4 books for #52bookclub24
I read book 12 of the Saxon Tales for a smelly book - lots of smells, especially in the London scenes.
Wide Sargasso Sea was kind of interesting but also difficult to read and overall a disappointment for me.
The Jókai book was full of twists and turns, I enjoyed it immensely (title translates roughly as Soul Tamer)
The Little Sister didn't quite hold my attention, but I guess I picked it up at a wrong time.

TheAromaofBooks I read all the Phillip Marlowe books a few years, and while I loved some of them, I wasn't a huge fan of The Little Sister. It lacked the dry humor of the earlier books in the series. 4mo
Librarybelle Nice choices for the challenge! 4mo
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks to be fair, it was a tumultuous time period for me, and I was chipping away at the book a few pages each night, so the conditions definitely weren't ideal. Still, I had read other Marlowe stories that I enjoyed a lot more. 4mo
eeclayton @Librarybelle thanks 🙂 4mo

#12 of 13. This was good; one of my favourites. It has a shorter time frame and moves faster as a result. Uhltred and Finan are getting old, but still they rise, they out-think, and with fierce loyalty and astonishing luck, they win their battles. So glad I found this series. Uhltred and Finan will be two characters I will not forget. 4/5

“Wyrd biõ ful ãræd”

Lord Uhtred is at it again — fighting to create a country that will ultimately swallow his kingdom. And Cornwell again masterfully writes battle scenes so well that the reader is transported to the front line of a medieval shield wall. He also intricately intertwines historical fact and people with the fictitious Uhtred to embroider the steadfast March toward the creation of Engaland.

“Fate remains wholly inexorable”

Mehso-so

An okay addition to the series. SoK kept me reading, but it‘s a very typical Last Kingdom series book. Cornwell didn‘t get too much out of the box for this one. Even so, it‘s a Cornwell Last Kingdom book, so it‘s still an absorbing read. I can‘t wait to read the 13th and last in the series when it comes out this fall!
