The Cruellest Month | Hazel Holt

Staying with an old friend in Oxford, Mrs Malory finds that her godson is more upset than his family realises about having found a body, crushed under falling bookshelves, because he believes it was no accident. She decides to investigate.

I would have loved the setting and characters in this cozy when it first came out around 1990 but now I found it rather meh, especially in its characterisation of gay men.

Reggie Were they the sassy sidekicks? 9h
rwmg @Reggie See spoilers below 6h
rwmg There were two gay men in the novel. One was the murderer and the other was a bitch who took great pleasure in telling the POV character how he and his then boyfriend had emotionally manipulated her 20 years before, thus wrecking some of her most precious memories of her university days.

No objection to gay men being the villains but not when they are the only gay men in the book.

Book 4 marks the end of the Edwardian Murder Mysteries. Lady Rose & her friend (her name escapes me at the moment) are funny & do get into some hilarious situations and as always Davina Porter is excellent. 3⭐️

This one was extra jarring & felt like a totally different series. Just when I finally had gotten used to the 2nd narrator, this one has a different one. Everything felt off in this one. Sigh. 3⭐️

Pickpick

I‘m giving this a soft pick. While there are differences in the Agatha Raisin series since R.W. Green took over, they are subtle & don‘t bother me much. Not so in the Hamish Macbeth series. In this one & the next one especially it almost feels like a completely different series. I will still keep reading but it‘s not the same. 3.5⭐️

Book 3 in the Edwardian Murder Mysteries is just ok. Very similar to the first two books and nothing stands out, but they are easy listening fluff narrated by the amazing Davina Porter. 3⭐️

Pickpick

I liked book 2 in the Edwardian Murder Mysteries series better than the first. Lady Rose & her “companion” crack me up. These are fluffy cozy mysteries narrated by the amazing Davina Porter who does a great job with the various accents. Can‘t go wrong with M.C. Beaton! 4⭐️

Pickpick

Everything I like in a cozy mystery. Amateur female sleuth, police detective boyfriend, likable supporting characters, small town setting, and a mystery that I can‘t figure out. I‘ll read more of this series. 4⭐️

This was my April pick for #ThematicCozies #Sport, and also my #BookSpin #DoubleSpin

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! Also - I got Indiscretion in the mail yesterday!!! Thank you so much for sending it back, I genuinely forgot you had it 😂 But in fairness I've had The Smile of a Stranger for so long that I literally don't remember who is supposed to get it next! 😂 😂 😂 5d

Mehso-so

This “cozy” mystery was very light. I found it a so-so book. The plot wasn‘t great and it was quite far-fetched. A 3/5 is generous
