DGRachel @bedandabook YES!! I love this trilogy and have read the first two books 3 times and the last one twice. The first book is the weakest and I‘ve heard a lot of people struggle at least with the beginning, but if you can make it to the Institute, the pace really picks up. I appreciated the first book much more after reading the second. Taken as a whole, it‘s a roller coaster ride of emotions. 6y

DGRachel @AceOnRoam Oh no! You must have selected the wrong version. I know it‘s been translated into a lot of different languages, but the original is in English. 6y

AceOnRoam I'm going to try the other ebook library service @DGRachel as my Overdrive only has the translation. Very strange for an Australian Library collection lol. It will be next year now as my dance card is sooo full right now. 6y

#EvilFriends was tricky. I'll go with Gollum/Smeagul. He's somewhat evil but likes to be friends with the hobbits.

Cathythoughts @Robothugs @erzascarletbookgasm it‘s about Brian Keenan, a man from Northern Ireland who was kidnapped & held prisoner in Beirut & how he mentally & physically survived this experience. It‘s a long time sinse I read this true story. It‘s not a light read. It‘s excellent 6y

TrishB I‘ve read this, not my usual sort (non fiction!) but him and John McCarthy were so inspirational I read both their books. 6y

During WWII, Anthony Burgess‘s wife was robbed and raped by a group of US Army deserters. In A Clockwork Orange Burgess is trying to understand what would lead people to do what they did, and to see if he could find any redemption for them.

The result is a book about #EvilFriends (‘droogs‘ in the book‘s slang), raping, and destroying anything.

quietlycuriouskate I will probably put off reading the book indefinitely and won't go anywhere near the movie. I'm curious about the slang, though, droogs and horror-show: why is it Russian-based? 6y

BarbaraBB @River_Voice Burgess spoke many languages (including Russian) and he knew that if he would use the slang of his time (the 1960s) his characters‘ vocabulary would sound outdated in years to come. Therefor he decided to invent his own slang, Nadast, based on Russian and other linguistic elements. 6y
