While trying to avoid attention, Tao stumbles into an adventuring party‘s quest and builds a found family along the way. This is charming and funny, with sweet characters. A low pick because it just reads like someone‘s D&D campaign with slightly flat characters and underdeveloped side characters and elements of the story. #Fantasy #FortuneTelling #Cozy

The premise of this book is that four siblings each learn the date of their death, and then how they choose to live their lives. I thought it would be more like The Measure, but instead the book has four sections that feel completely separate, telling the story of each sibling. Themes range widely from AIDS, women in business, mental health, ethics in scientific research, marriage, Israel and the Middle East, and more. Good, but not my fave.

A beautiful about four siblings who know their impending death dates thanks to a local fortune teller. Varys, the oldest, is driven to study longevity to try to defy death. Daniel is reliable until losing his job pushes him over the edge. Klara infuses inspiration through her magic& youngest Simon who lived life boldly as it was predicted to end by the age he was 21. Throughout are themes that really make you think about living with purpose.

Interesting font choice.

(I just randomly opened the book and took a picture. Didn‘t read it until just now. Is the universe outing me? I don‘t think I‘m exactly the Queen of swords but….)

TalesandTexts What an interesting combo. Does this page hold the queen of cups as well? The one above the swords? 1y
Sace @TalesandTexts the page of swords precedes it. Which… confuses me? I thought the court cards were page, knight, Queen, king. 1y
TalesandTexts Yes, you‘re right. That‘s the structure. But given the description, I thought it was either a cups or a wands description. 1y

Sace @TalesandTexts I wish I knew the cards well enough that I could even guess at a random description 😂 1y
TalesandTexts 😂 i‘m sure you will soon enough 1y
Andrea4 That is an interesting font choice. Perhaps the author decided to pair the “female“ courts together and then the “males“ to kind of compare and contrast? 1y
Sace @Andrea4 apparently the author hand wrote her books? Very impressive if that‘s true. I‘m just glad to have this book. It‘s hard to find inexpensive copies of her books (which must be out of print). I‘ll look at the at the book again and pay more attention to how she organized. 1y

I‘ve always been fascinated by tarot. It probably started when I was 12 and saw a deck in a bookstore and bought it…and didn‘t do more than look at the cards (I wish I still had the lovely box I kept them in). I decided to get serious about learning tarot in 2020.

Fast forward 4 years and … I still haven‘t learned tarot. But I have a couple decks and a bunch of books! I‘ve been thinking about my cards a lot recently. I might be dipping back in.

ElizaMarie YES go for it! 1y
Sace @ElizaMarie I don‘t think my end goal will ever be to read for others though. 1y

I read this because it was mentioned in reviews for The Measure, but apart from the core idea (how would knowing the date of your death affect your life), it couldn't have been more different. It was more serious, more realistic and better written, yet I liked it less. The lives of four siblings take wildly different, but mostly tragic paths, with Daniel's the least convincing. A low pick because it is certainly thought-provoking, if not pleasant.

1. I loved the summer reading program for kids. Whoever read the most books won a prize--I still remember winning a dictionary and being absolutely thrilled. It was the '80s 🤷‍♀️

2. I get books mostly from the library, Goodwill, Half-Priced Books, bookshop.org, basically everywhere! Trying to avoid Amazon

3. The Immortalists, mainly because it was mentioned in a lot of reviews of The Measure, a recent book club book.

I loved this sweeping tale set in Georgian England. Red is a great character, resourceful & engaging, with skills in fortune-telling. She is involved with a wealthy family but realises they‘re lying to her & her life is in danger. Dickens vibes in the immersive historical world, pacy story-telling & dastardly deeds with an orphan hero. Beautifully written, a book to be swept away in.

Just WOW . 5☆ This was an excellent read. I had to keep putting it down because I knew the protagonist was in trouble again! You ever read books like that? Red is an orphan who reads fortunes through the square of Sevens layout. After her father dies when she is 7, she is fostered by a kind man who raises her. She finds out she is the heir to the DeLacy fortune and vows to claim it , though the family doesn't realize she exists. ⬇️

Crazeedi So she undergoes the quest to be recognized in court. Except she has many obstacles she faces, and has to run from trouble at many turns. The plot of the book is complex but totally engrossing. Pay attention to the cards at the beginning of each chapter! If you like magic you will like this book 2y
