Practical Magic | Alice Hoffman

Reread, I haven‘t read this book since 2006, watched the movie countless times, found out the movie was a book and this was my very first Alice Hoffman novel ever read.

That being said, the movie is very different from the book! The book is still good and I barely remembered how it went! ⬇️

Ladygodiva7 Gillian has super short hair, Sally doesn‘t meet Gary until 80 pages from the end, Jimmy was dead for over a year, Sally‘s kids are 13 & 16 & Gillian finds true love 💕 Still a 5-star for me! 5h
Texreader I‘m so glad I finally read it a couple of years ago. There‘s at least three books I think? 5h
Ladygodiva7 @Texreader There‘s 4 books total! This one is now considered book 3. 46m

A book that took me for forever to finish (9 months) and that I initially loved and then fought with and then liked again. The reasons for all this: The unique way of story telling. And just because it‘s so special, I would also recommend it.

Swamped this week, so a bit late posting my review. This book was the perfect read at the perfect time. A quietly mournful tale of two people building a life on the frontier when their familiar life becomes unbearable. I didn‘t mind the magical realism and elements of ambiguity around the child. I loved that the story centered on the female experience, contrasting Mabel, Esther, and Faina‘s relationships with society, but also ⬇️

CSeydel … that Jack is a fully realized character, portrayed with nuance and complex emotions, rather than simply a foil or a driver of plot events. 4⭐️ 3d

All in all, the book and it's characters are so different from their movie counterparts, especially the relationships all the women have towards each other, Sally's daughters included, that I find I can enjoy them as separate pieces.
So glad to have read it and knocked it off my TBR list this year!!

I loved this book! A bit out there, yes. But that‘s what reading is for me- a place to temporarily escape normality. Merritt is hilarious, Delphie‘s growth is what life is all about, and Cooper‘s dreamy-ness is, well dreamy, even when he‘s broody. A fun, fluffy, romance book full of emotion that I happily read in a day. Book #113 in 2024

this book is a book about storytelling - the stories that get told during our lifetimes and those that remain untold. The protagonist is an author who, at the end of her career moves back to her homeland of DR where she buys a plot of land and builds a cemetery for her unfinished/untold novels. But some stories don‘t want to stay untold. With a touch of magical realism and a mix of historical & cultural elements from DR, this was my sort of book.
