Lost Lake
Lost Lake | Sarah Addison Allen
Now a New York Times BestsellerFrom the author of the beloved bestseller Garden Spells comes a beautiful, haunting story of old loves and new, and the power of the connections that bind us forever...The first time Eby Pim saw Lost Lake, it was on a picture postcard. Just an old photo and a few words on a small square of heavy stock, but when she saw it, she knew she was seeing her future. That was half a life ago. Now Lost Lake is about to slip into Eby's past. Her husband George is long passed. Most of her demanding extended family are gone. All that's left is a once-charming collection of lakeside cabins succumbing to the Southern Georgia heat and damp, and an assortment of faithful misfits drawn back to Lost Lake year after year by their own unspoken dreams and desires. It's a lot, but not enough to keep Eby from relinquishing Lost Lake to a developer with cash in hand, and calling this her final summer at the lake. Until one last chance at family knocks on her door.Lost Lake is where Kate Pheris spent her last best summer at the age of twelve, before she learned of loneliness, and heartbreak, and loss. Now she's all too familiar with those things, but she knows about hope too, thanks to her resilient daughter Devin, and her own willingness to start moving forward. Perhaps at Lost Lake her little girl can cling to her own childhood for just a little longer... and maybe Kate herself can rediscover something that slipped through her fingers so long ago.One after another, people find their way to Lost Lake, looking for something that they weren't sure they needed in the first place: love, closure, a second chance, peace, a mystery solved, a heart mended. Can they find what they need before it's too late? At once atmospheric and enchanting, Lost Lake shows Sarah Addison Allen at her finest, illuminating the secret longings and the everyday magic that wait to be discovered in the unlikeliest of places.

After her husband's death, Kate takes her daughter Devin to visit her great-aunt Eby at Lost Lake, a place she enjoyed visiting when she was Devin's age. But when she gets there, she finds out that Eby is getting ready to sell her land and lakeside cottages.

This one was a little predictable, but still a good read.

I'm making this year the year I really tackle my TBR so here's book 1 of the 24 I'm attempting to get through.

This was a page-turner for me that I had to force myself to slow down and be able to see Lost Lake, it's inhabitants, and the ghosts on the water.

Texreader I‘ve started this a couple of times but it failed to keep my attention. Glad to hear it‘s a good one. Encouragement for me to try again 1y

Sarah Addison Allen novels never disappoint. I didn‘t fall in love with this one the way I did with Garden Spells, but it was still uplifting and a touch otherworldly. It was a surprisingly quick read. I‘m glad this came up as my #bookspin book, and I can‘t wait to read her the rest of her books!

Magical Realism is a genre I always wanted but I didn't even know existed! I really enjoy the subtle hints of fantasy in an otherwise normal world.

Do I ever love magical realism! Sarah Addison Allen is such a purveyor of magic. I‘ll read anything she writes because her character creation and storytelling is so damn good.

I cared about the characters 10 minutes into the book. That‘s magic. (rest of review in comments)

booksbrewsandbooze There‘s several twists here that I didn‘t see coming. Wow.

Selma is one of the most interesting and complex characters. She is unexpected.
2y
booksbrewsandbooze
I get mild Big Fish (the movie) vibes from this... mostly in the magical realism aspect.
2y
booksbrewsandbooze Lost Lake is about the past, the present, the future... what it means to deeply love someone, what it means to deeply love a place, the sacrifices and decisions we willingly make for love, chosen family vs. biological family, the walls people put up, the power of female friendships. 2y
booksbrewsandbooze
It would make a great book to discuss with friends or your book club. Or just read it yourself, let it stay with you like letting chocolate melt in your mouth and appreciate the magic of it all.

This was my first Sarah Addison Allen, and it won't be my last. I loved the characters. More than that, I loved the way the book made me feel - I don't think I can do it justice by trying to describe it, so I won't try. I always love a touch of magical realism in a story - and the magical realism here was woven in perfectly, I think. Going to be hard not to just read another of her books to fill the void left by this one!

Margot0817 I saw Waking Kate is a prequel to this book. Should I read that one first then or start this and go back and read Waking Kate? 2y
rjsthumbelina @Margot0817 I didn't read Waking Kate before reading this and I had no problems following along with it. I didn't know there was a prequel! 2y

On a work trip tonight and tried two audiobooks (on the right). Lionheart is very hard to follow with lots of history and characters; a shame as it started so well. Kings Curse seems less overwhelming but not feeling it yet. So I pulled out an impulse buy-Lost Lake-and am trying to read it in my hotel room now. Hmph. Not quite how I anticipated this evening. Oh well. Good night Litsy friends.

TrishB Lionheart is truly worth the effort 👍 5y
Itchyfeetreader Not read Lionheart but have read a couple of others of hers. If you are not familiar with the period I'd recommend scribbling a quick cast list to keep with you but if like the rest of you may it through the first introducing everyone pages then you'll be in for a treat. 5y
JillR Lionheart was a slow start for me too, but then I really enjoyed it 5y
Texreader @Itchyfeetreader @TrishB @JillR Thanks y'all! I decided to keep going with Lionheart thanks to your comments. I'm still struggling a bit with all the characters (and the narration leaves a bit to be desired) but I think I'll stick with it. It has a lot of promise. 5y

Cathythoughts Yes I've read Ragnar Jonassons books set in Iceland. Very good ! He has a new one , White Blind, coming out in September. I really like our hero, Ari Thor. And The Icelandic setting is interesting, especially the town cut off except for a tunnel & when it snows, cut off completely. I love the flow of his writing. 👍 5y
Jess_Read_This @Cathythoughts I can't wait for the new one! He's definitely a favorite author of mine. When Ari buys himself a book on Christmas Eve it just broke my heart. That quote and scene really stood out in Snow Blind for me. 5y

Cathythoughts I have the new Ari Thor ordered on my kindle. It's out in September, great to find a fellow fan 👍👍 5y
Jess_Read_This @Cathythoughts She's totally different than Ragnar Jonasson. Not even the same genre. She has a whimsical writing style and incorporates a few magical circumstances in her modern day stories set in the South. Each book usually involves a family tragedy, secret, and the eventual overcoming of the circumstance and finding love along the way. She does have a gorgeous writing style though. Just very different than Jonasson's. 5y
Jess_Read_This @Cathythoughts I love that it comes out In September! I last heard October! But I was going to order a print copy from Book Depository. (edited) 5y

Jess_Read_This @Cathythoughts I really liked Garden Spells. 5y
