Bah, I meant to get all my book challenges updated last night, but instead I had a friend over to ring in the new year. Fingers crossed that I actually finished a challenge!

I thought this had a weak start, but eventually I was completely drawn in to Alma Vanderbilt's fascinating life. I stayed up way too late researching Gilded Age mansions.

The Scorpio Races | Maggie Stiefvater

Book 20 of #MountTBR- I may have to check out Stiefvater‘s other books as I loved this one. I love Puck. She is a feisty and strong character. It had just the right amount of a romance and no love triangle!

Well, that was a strange story, but I enjoyed the ride! The resolution seems quite far-fetched and character reactions are almost silly, but I really liked the setting and comedic jabs at health and wellness resorts. And boy, was this a wellness retreat gone wrong!

This is also my last book for #booked2018 #newin2018, so now I am officially done with all of my 2018 year-long reading challenges!

BookishTrish I like this photo! 6y
alisiakae @bookishtrish Thank you! It‘s my yoga mat...seemed appropriate as the background. 🧘‍♀️ 😃 (edited) 6y

Loved this modern-day Pride and Prejudice retelling! It was full of so much heart and beautiful messages. Sometimes retellings don‘t quite make the cut for me, but Zoboi truly took P&P and used it as inspirational framework to create her own unique story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Murder as a Fine Art | David Morrell

My final quarter of #booked2018 is complete. Here‘s what I read—

#newin2018 Heartland
#mcwithaninvisibleillness Reasons to Stay Alive
#spooky The Elementals
#underdoghero Murder as a Fine Art
#MCover70 Three Things About Elsie
#featuresaholiday Better Not Cry

vivastory I just checked out Murder As A Fine Art. Your review has me even more excited for it. 6y
Reviewsbylola It was really good!! The author wrote in his afterword that he immersed himself in 1854 Victorian London for two years in preparation for writing this book and it clearly showed. He went above and beyond by including a lot of details about the period. @vivastory (edited) 6y
vivastory That sounds exactly what I was looking for! I'm looking for a new historical mystery series after I read the final book in MJ Carter's series 6y

I loved this. The use of multiple voices from different generations was really effective in showing how the same struggles come up time and time again. Every voice was unique and the tension was literally felt through the pages. It‘s gritty and bleak but the writing is at times poetic. #newin2018 #booked2018

Night Before Christmas | Nikolai Gogol

I loved this little Russian Christmas tale... it‘s actually really funny. I especially enjoyed the very busy and popular village witch, although as a 41-year-old person, I could have done without this line:

“Vakula‘s mother was no more than forty years old and was neither good nor bad looking (though, of course, it‘s difficult to look good at forty).”

Speak for yourself, Gogol! 😂

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cinfhen Was this your final #booked2018?!?! 6y
sprainedbrain @Cinfhen No, one more to go! I‘m reading this one for #NewIn2018. I‘ve actually read a bunch of new books this year and could use one of them, but I picked this one last year for this prompt and I‘m sticking to it. 😂 6y

vivastory Have you read 6y
vivastory It's hilarious 6y
sprainedbrain @vivastory I haven‘t yet, but I‘m sure it doesn‘t surprise you that it‘s on my list. #1001books 😃 6y
vivastory Yeah, it's really short. I think Dead Souls is also on the list. I think I will make a point of reading that next year. 6y
sprainedbrain @vivastory this was my first Gogol, but I like the humor. Looking forward to more. 6y
Peddler410 @sprainedbrain I hear ya! I‘m read a book aloud to my daughter in which 42 is considered incredibly old for the aunt — i‘m 46 😳 6y

Macbeth | Jo Nesbo

Mehso-so

I just thought this whole reimagining was heavy handed and sloppy. What makes Macbeth a great story is the finesse. I felt no sympathy for this Macbeth. Nothing more than a megalomaniac with no depth. #NewIn2018 #booked2018 #getreading2018 #26of36 #audiobook

Cinfhen That‘s a shame!! Maybe Nesbø wasn‘t the right author to retell Shakespeare !?! ?‍♀️ 6y
Literaturenut His prose were actually quite lovely and well written. I think if he had spent more time to develop the depth of story it would have been better. I would think retelling a Classic is always in ways more difficult because you want to make it your own, but it still needs to be recognizable. 6y
