I'm making some headway with #Proust2026 and this passage knocked me absolutely flat today. It's tough reading, no doubt, but I'm approaching it like written Pointillism: I'm often in the middle of a bunch of dots, but at certain moments, the whole picture washes over me. I'm doing 10 pages at a time, and some days I sigh in frustration and have to remind myself of the rewards of slow diligence. But today? Today I was moved to tears.

Amiable “Written Pointillism”: That‘s a fabulous description of a reading strategy! 17m

Swann's Way | Marcel Proust

The most comforting sleep for me is when I have showered and ready to leave, school had been suddenly canceled. I put on pajamas, wrap myself with the covers, lay down my head. I may or may not have a book. I'm so comfortable and that is the only time I truly feel pure hygge. In my middle age, I find i sleep better when the sun is up. During the days following Helene, I would just lay on top of the covers, it was hellishly hot,

Butterfinger and wait for the sun to rise because CUSTOM dictates you sleep at night. No movement is allowed. When dawn came, I could finally get up, go to the car to charge my phone, and listen to the news on the radio. We didn't know what was happening except for the few minutes of 99.9, Asheville Country Station. I relate to Proust finding comfort in the familiar. I assigned characteristics to every wood pattern -70s paneling. If something caused a change, 1d
Butterfinger I would fret. I couldn't create stories of the humanistic looking patterns. I knew it was weird. I knew what every creak in my old home meant. I even knew if my father had a bad day by his heavy tread coming up the porch steps. Stay out of the living room. I am very much like his grandmother. I hate symmetry and right angles. My photos on the wall and my scrapbooks bother ocd, but I see the rhyme and reason. Memories of his mother was touching. 1d
Butterfinger Loving mother vs. obedient wife. Ugh. Give him snuggles for heaven's sake. His gift of a magic lamp is stifling his order. His custom. This was quite fun @TheBookHippie @BookishMarginalia #Proust2026 1d

This book is lovely! Basically it is reproductions of the artworks mentioned by Proust —in the order they appear in the novels!— with a brief contextualizing summary and the pertinent quote from the book. Home run! #Proust2026

Daisey That‘s a fantastic companion read! 2d
Leftcoastzen Very cool!😎 1d

Andrea313 Wow! I'm going to need to get this. 1d
Dilara That is such a good idea for a book (or a website!) 1d
AnnCrystal 😍🎨💝. 1d
AnneCecilie I should have had this when I read Proust. But are all the art work mentioned in Proust real? A lot of art mentioned in book 3 is by a fictional character/ artist 20h
BookishMarginalia @AnneCecilie That‘s a good question. There‘s enough real references to warrant this book, beyond that, 🤷🏻‍♀️🤓 15h

Guys, I am struggling to keep up! I have the worst headache from the Siniusitis I developed from my grandkids being sick over Christmas!! I am so afraid I am going to fall behind... Page 4 of 66 for the week. I must have a large print because my numbers are off from what others have.

Any suggestions?
#proust2026.

TheBookHippie Just slow and steady . I get up drink some coffee read 5 -10 pages. That‘s it. Everyone I talk to says just start slow -you‘ll pick up the pace. 3d
LinesUponAPage @TheBookHippie thanks, Christine! 3d

Lcsmcat Sometimes it helps if I say it out loud in my head, if that makes sense. It slows my reading down and “hearing” the words helps. 3d
BookishMarginalia It's a year-long ultramarathon, so this is what I recommend: give yourself grace. Lots of grace! Proust benefits from slow unhurried reading, just experiencing the text. Plot is not the point. Being is. 3d
LinesUponAPage @Lcsmcat yeah, thats fantastic advice, Linda. Thanks! 2d
LinesUponAPage @BookishMarginalia thanks, Gloria! It's just this dang headache. Sinus infections suck. 2d

TheBookHippie @Lcsmcat excellent advice. I‘m going to try that too. (edited) 2d
TheBookHippie @LinesUponAPage I have complex migraines so I feel ya. I hope it passes soon. ♥️ 2d
lil1inblue I'm still trying to find my groove, as well. I can't imagine a headache helps with your concentration! Give yourself grace while you're healing, and I'm sure you'll be able pick up the pace when you're well. We'll all help each other along! 2d
Butterfinger @BookishMarginalia I love that advice. I think I will join @TheBookHippie but remind me of grace if I give up. I still have guilt from giving up on Ulysses with @Daisey a few years ago. 2d
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger ♥️♥️♥️ 2d
Daisey @Butterfinger No guilt! Some books are for us at certain times and some are not. 2d

First goal met in #Proust2026! 🎉🎉🎉

And in honor of #haikuhive and Proust‘s iconic madeleine:

Warm crumb in tea steam
A small shell opens the past
Time breathes, teasing me

Amiable Great choice! Love McCullough 👍🏼 4d
LinesUponAPage @Amiable he is my favorite historian. I was so sad when he died knowing we wouldn't have any more books or talks from him. I believe John Adams written by Mccullough also will be my next one, although with me I never know what book I'll choose. I need to go check out what you chose. Might add it to my list! 😉 4d

Crazeedi @LinesUponAPage he was such a great writer 4d
TEArificbooks I love McCulloughs writing too. I‘m also going to his John Adams one next month. Glad you‘re participating. 4d
Amiable @LinesUponAPage I read McCullough‘s bio on Adams years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. For this challenge I‘m making my way through the American Presidents series published by Macmillan, so I‘ll likely pick up this one: (edited) 4d
Rome753 I have "1776" on my TBR list. Hoping to get to it this year. I read "John Adams" last year. Really enjoyed it. 3d
