Spooky tale of gothic ghosts, long lost sisters, and all-too-human predators haunting a Rhode Island B & B in winter. Read it for Women in Horror month, but thriller fans who don‘t mind a ghost in a secret passageway will love it too. Vivid setting & “meta” style commentary on gothic lit tropes are used well. #gothic #spooky #sisters

If you are going to set a book somewhere then visit. It is really inexcusable to get street names wrong or describe areas of a city wrong. Take a research holiday.

York is amazing, and so far I get no sense of that from this book. It's generic England!

This was just the charming read (with slight macabre undertones) I needed for this snowy day. The Skull is Klassen's retelling of a folktale he found in a library in Alaska. The author's note was an interesting peek at his creative process, but also how we reshape stories in our memories over time. The story itself is about Otilla who runs away & discovers a house in the woods with a talking skull. A creative, dark, children's story with (CONT)

vivastory wonderful illustrations & a great underlying message too. Another solid #AuldLangSpine read. @larkken @monalyisha (edited) 3mo
Suet624 I love seeing what you‘ve been reading recently. It feels like a departure from your reading history. 3mo
vivastory @Suet624 Thanks, Sue! It has been a refreshing change of pace. I still enjoy a good classic & lit fic, but I am embracing my eclectic tastes 💙 3mo

LeahBergen Wonderful illustration! 3mo
TieDyeDude I loved the way the author's note added another layer to this book! 3mo
vivastory @LeahBergen There were a few pages where Otilla & the skull were wearing masks lol I liked the illustrations a lot. Will def be checking out more Klassen, 3mo
vivastory @TieDyeDude It's funny because I don't always read author notes, but I found this one to be really thought provoking. 3mo
Larkken 🖤 such a great intersection of cozy and creepy! 3mo
vivastory @Larkken I just placed a hold on a Lemony Snicket book he illustrated “The Dark“. It looks promising. I was completely unaware of Klassen before receiving your favorites list. 3mo
TheKidUpstairs I remember him posting somewhere with a “why I love libraries“ story about reaching out to a library in Alaska with a vague “I saw a story in your library, please help me find it“ query - is this the result? 3mo
vivastory @TheKidUpstairs It is! He specifically mentions in the author's note that this was an Alaskan library. 3mo
quietjenn @vivastory he's one of my favorite working illustrators! 3mo
batsy This is on my wishlist. Glad to see you liked it. I've loved whatever I've seen of his style... So distinctive. 3mo
Aimeesue Klassen is the best, period. I love his artwork for Barrett‘s The Three Billy Goats Gruff, too - has that same darkish undertone. (edited) 3mo

I was sold when I saw this duology had been dubbed "Heartstopper with ghosts." A captivating YA debut, deliciously swoonworthy & packed full of frights, unfolds with a ragbag team of seers, friends & an assortment of lively ghosts on the cobbled, haunted streets of York. Love, friendship & loss mixed in with a healthy pinch of mortal peril & adventure is a wonderfully diverse & beautifully written ghost story riddled with twists & turns.

GirlNamedJesse Oh my god it‘s comped to Cemetery Boys AND Heartstopper?! brb buying both immediately. 😂💙 3mo
GirlNamedJesse Not ghost related, but heartwarming in a way that makes me feel like I‘m reading Heartstopper are EL Massey‘s novels. I loved them so much I bought them as ebooks and in print. 💙 3mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @GirlNamedJesse Yes!! Isn't it the most PERFECT combination?! Honestly, I'm obsessed!! 3mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @GirlNamedJesse Ooh, I've never heard of El Massey!! I'm looking them up immediately!! I'm always looking to add more books to my teetering TRP!! Thank you for the recommendation!! 3mo

My December pick for #12Booksof2023. The two stories about the mothers are the ones that have stuck with me the most. Likely because I am a first time mother and am reminded every day of the dangers and difficulties we face both from outside and within. As a jaded horror fan, none of these stories particularly “terrified” me, but they were definitely the right kind of creepy for the isolation of the winter season.

Andrew65 Thanks for playing long, a great way to review 2023. See you for #12Booksof2024 on Christmas Day. 3mo
