Pickpick

Okay, I'll admit that this one was a VERY soft pick for me, but hey, nostalgia FTW as this is also one that I have definite memories of reading back in the day 😂 But Trixie really got on my nerves in this one! She was so whiny and impatient and OBSESSED with the ghost fish. Like - maybe other people had other things they want to do?? Also you're on vacation, so you could just let go of the whole “we HAVE to earn money for charity!!!“ thing for ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) like three days?! On the other hand, I really enjoyed the rest of the Bob-Whites, especially when Trixie tried to say that her first impressions of people are always right and Honey called her out on it 😂

Side note, where do you think Uncle Andrew gets all his money?? Because I don't feel like sheepherding in Iowa is THAT profitable!

I had mixed feelings about the whole ghost/amnesia/back from the dead aspect of this story. What did ⬇
1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) you all think? And was Trixie actually annoying, or was I just in A Mood when I was reading this one? Any other thoughts?

I am still really enjoying these, and looking forward to The Blinking Eye this month - although apparently that one didn't have anything as memorable as eyeless fish, as I don't remember it at all! 😆

lauraisntwilder Trixie was annoying! 😆 I thought the ones right before this one were two of the better ones, so this one was almost jarring. 1w
DebinHawaii Trixie was pretty bad in this one. I just remember being fascinated by the ghost fish growing up & how scary the caves were (I‘ve always been claustrophobic) 😱 Funny about the next one. I remember Trixie gets a fortune & although I haven‘t picked it up in decades, I think it starts “Great headed man with blinking eye, a shaded road, a horse‘s cry…” I need to pull it off my shelf & check to be sure. Don‘t ask me how I can remember that! 🤣🤣🤣 1w
BookmarkTavern She was very focused! 😂😂 I think if there had been a more urgent need for the money, I wouldn‘t have found her attitude to be too much. And I feel like every long running mystery series needs at least one amnesia storyline. 😂 So at least we‘ve got that out of the way! 1w
TheAromaofBooks @lauraisntwilder - According to this website - http://trixie-belden.com/books/KathrynKenny.htm - there were at least 8 ghost writers for the series, and it's a little vague as to who wrote which ones. I didn't notice the differences between the books reading these back in the day, but as an adult there are definitely quality/consistency issues (mostly minor) between books. All that to say, I wonder if 9&10 were one author, and 11 was another? 6d
TheAromaofBooks @DebinHawaii - Those ghost fish really stuck with me! I realized that I had somewhat confused the stories from this one and Happy Valley (maybe because they both involve Uncle Andrew, rowboats, and flash flooding?? 😂) as I kind of kept waiting for the ghost fish to show up in HV haha And even if that isn't the exact fortune, I'm still impressed!!! 6d
TheAromaofBooks @BookmarkTavern - I think it was the lack of urgency that is what made it somewhat annoying. In past books, there has been some kind of deadline or reason that the money is needed sooner than later, but here it almost felt like Trixie was just being competitive or something. 6d

Who were the kids in this book? Because they didn't act at all like the Bob-Whites from the first 10 books. Trixie was persistent to the point of being annoying. Their poor uncle! He didn't get to see them much in Iowa (& Trixie almost drowned) & they aren't paying any attention to him in Missouri either (& Trixie almost drowned). I hadn't realized that Kathryn Kenny was a pen name, but it's pretty obvious to me now. #bobwhitebuddies

The Bob-Whites next adventure includes spelunking, ghost fish, & a mysterious voice on the wind.

This was the 1 I remembered the best from my childhood. The description of the eyeless fish really freaked me out as a kid. There were some interesting side mysteries, & I loved the side characters in Andrew‘s lodge. Although I laughed out loud when Trixie said “when has my 1st impression been wrong?” & a last minute kind of pointless twist.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

lauraisntwilder Agreed on that twist at the end -- so unnecessary. 1w
Sparklemn This was one of my favorites. 1w
TheAromaofBooks I also thought the first impression line was hilarious 😂 I appreciated Honey calling her out on it LOL I finished this one so I am hoping to post a discussion post for us today or tomorrow!! 1w

#DynamicDs

Growing up, I wanted to be a #Detective & solve crimes like my heroes. Since it didn‘t happen, I spend a little part of each month getting nostalgic with Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, & Encyclopedia Brown. Here‘s the April books for #NancyDrewBR #BobWhiteBuddies & #EBBR

February's #BobWhiteBuddies read was enjoyable but not particularly outstanding. There really wasn't much “mystery,“ but I did enjoy the interactions of the gang.

Query: What do you all think was the point of making Dan a member of the Bob Whites and then literally never having him do anything with them?? 😂

Feel free to share any thoughts you had on this one!!

TheBookHippie I love the cover. 1mo
BookmarkTavern The more cynical part of me says that subsequent writers saw 3 girls, 3 boys, and saw perfect little developing romances. The more hopeful part says that they‘re writing to people who maybe don‘t get to participate in as many things with their friends because of responsibilities, but they still get to see the BobWhites value and miss Dan. (edited) 4w
BookmarkTavern And I can‘t remember, do we see the journalist again? He‘s been set up as a pretty good long term antagonist for the group, but I don‘t remember seeing him again. 4w

#Read2025 #SeriesLove2025

Finished Book #11 for #BobWhiteBR on Sunday. Trixie & the Bob-Whites (sans Dan of course & Di this time) are off to Uncle Andrew Belden‘s lodge in the Ozarks. Trixie is obsessed with finding rare cave ghost fish to win $500 to buy a station wagon for “crippled children.” As a child, I remember being fascinated with the ghost fish & admiring Trixie‘s bravery in spelunking in the caves. (My claustrophobia could never!)😱

The Marshland Mystery | Kathryn Kenny

I finished these at the beginning of March. Ozma of Oz starts off pretty unhinged, but end up being a more coherent story that Marvelous Land of Oz. This Trixie book was one of my favorites so far. I like that these feel like mysteries a kid could actually solve. This one also included a long-past tragedy and tumbled down mansion, so it was checking all the boxes for this Kate Morton reader. #bobwhitebuddies #BeyondtheYellowBrickRoad

BookmarkTavern What a gorgeous edition of Oz! 🤩🤩 1mo

Honey‘s family is hosting a child violin prodigy while the BobWhites are trying to recreate a collection of pressed flowers for a teacher. Only, there is something out in the local marsh.

This was a mostly Trixie & Honey story. Di is barely there, the boys are in the background, & poor Dan only gets mentioned once. But we also see Trixie learning to not judge people by 1st impressions. & we meet an antagonistic journalist. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

#Read2025 #SeriesLove2025

Finished book 10 last Sunday for #BobWhiteBuddies & I‘m pretty sure this was the first Trixie Belden book I ever read. My sister had this copy & I ended up “borrowing” it & then asking for the rest of the series since she wasn‘t much of a reader. I remembered quite a bit of it as I was reading it, Gaye & her puppy & the gathering of the plants for their teacher. This one was pretty mild mystery-wise & as usual, Dan ⬇️

DebinHawaii … the newest Bob-White was too busy working to join in anything—although actually, all the boys were kept pretty busy for this one. I‘m looking forward to traveling with the Bob-Whites again in the next two books.

peaKnit I used to go to our local “dime store” with my grandma and get Trixie books…such a great memory. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I haven't read this one yet this month, but I am really looking forward to it. The next few are some of the first I read in the series as well, checking them out from our library. Then back in the early 2000s I happened to be shopping the discard shelf - and there they all were!!! So I own several of these in library hardcovers from my own library and love them so much!! 2mo
CatMS I think I read every Trixie Belden books as a youngster they were my favorites. 2mo
