Here‘s my first #MiddleGradeMarch book. It is for the prompt “a book older than me.” I listened to the audiobook and I am so glad I did because the narrator was French which was delightful for me to hear. My father taught me a few words in French, then I studied it in school/college. I loved this book! There were so many good lessons. 18 #BookSpin #23 #BFC22 #AClassicAMonth #ChildrensClassic #ReadYourShelf #MGMarchThroughTime #Buzzwordathon

I finished it!!! Finally! This is definitely #AlmostAChunkster 640 pages of the most dysfunctional family ever. They were always plotting against each other and they were full of themselves. Anyway I‘m done with it and glad of it. #14 #BookSpin #9 #BFC22 #ReadMyRoom #AClassicAMonth #sharreadathon #KicktheSlump #20in4 #Pantone2022 Daffodil #TidyBookshelfDiverseReading #WintersRespite #TheRoyalReadathon

This is an American classic, written by an American author, but is the story of a girl of Swedish descent. She has a gift for music and works hard all her life on mastering her piano playing and later singing. She is rewarded for her efforts with success. She never forgets her beginnings though and her family back home. #2 #BS 8 #BookSpinBingo #BFC22 #JUMPSTART2022 #AClassicAMonth #LiterALLyBOOKish #Pantone2022ColourChallenge #Wintercosy

A short and horrifying read about a woman who is driven into madness. The narration started out passive, then turned to disturbing, giving insight into the mind of a depressed woman who is oppressed in mind and body. Such a great and important read. Recommended.

This is a fabulous and endearing story for children and adults alike. A story of friendship between a sulky orphan girl, a boy full of self-pity and a delightful boy who charms animals. The setting is beautifully depicted and some dialogues in Yorkshire accent is fun to read. One of those happy and make-you-feel-good books, with plenty of discussion opportunities if reading together with a child.

Although written more than 60 years ago, this book is still relevant today and the messages are clear. A frightening tale and a warning of how we become less human when our intellectuals are suppressed and we become mindless slaves. Filled with literary references, great quotes and an intriguing plot, this is a good reminder of what we have is valuable.

A Study in Scarlet | Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

"There's a scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it."

An excellent introduction to the famous literary detective's sharp mind, peculiar methods and powers of deduction. The sensible Dr. Watson is also introduced in this first book. A tragic tale of love and deadly revenge.

This story within a story, explores the responsibility of mankind towards each other. A young scientist, Victor, in a fit of madness, created a hideous 'wretch', who out of desperation, stalks him & goes on a murderous rampage, killing those close to him. I sympathise with both Victor & the 'wretch' for their torments. A really good gothic horror story, but was a bit tedious reading the detailed description of the scenery during Victor's travels.

This is a classic horror and romance tale from a whole different time period. An opera ghost or a 'phantom' who haunts the Opera house, a love triangle and a tragic hero. Ultimately, it's a sad story of a lonely man who never knew love and became obsessive and possessive. Err, I may be the only few ones who have not watched ALWebber's musical or the movie adaptation.

BeckyK I adore the musical, especially the 25th anniversary performance which was filmed, and is on Amazon if you fancy a watch. I have the book but haven't read it yet! :) 8y

This has been a fun reread for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and a first read for Through the Looking Glass. Charming illustrations by Sir John Tenniel. 💗
