Demon Copperhead: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver

What a really good, really sad book. I loved it, but it broke my heart many times over.

I have to say the ending wasn‘t what I expected. If you‘ve read it I assume you understand.

For those who have read David Copperfield, how much does this resemble the Dickens?

CSeydel It‘s extremely faithful to the original! I enjoyed seeing the parallels. 8mo
AmyG I didn‘t quite expect the ending either. 8mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I really enjoyed picking out the characters from the original. I agree with @CSeydel I thought it was very faithful. I did wish this aunt character had a beef with donkeys like the original, I kept waiting for that hilarity 🤣. 8mo

dabbe I've read David Copperfield, but not this, I'm ashamed to say. It's on my TBR, and I'm moving it up so that I can compare. I loved David Copperfield, so I hope I'll love this one, too. 8mo
Cinfhen This book really deserves all the accolades!!! 8mo
Cathythoughts I loved this book. Heartbreaking and beautiful. I havnt read D Copperfield either. (edited) 8mo
JuniperWilde I recent heard the author on a podcast speaking about classism, and the entrenched discrimination directed at people from Appalachia. Her commitment to DC the MC was really evident. She was emotional speaking about him. Agree re the ending. 8mo

Demon Copperhead: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver

I thought this was excellent: I really enjoyed the authentic voice of the main character, narrating his way through all kinds of struggles and crises as he comes of age in Appalachia. Lots of emphasis is put on Appalachian, culture and dignity, and insights, particularly into the opioid epidemic. I can‘t compare it to David Copperfield, as I haven‘t read it, but understand there are many parallels. #Booked2023 #AModernTakeOnAClassic

TheBookHippie If you liked it I‘ll try it!!! I‘ve been on the fence about it. 11mo
Scochrane26 I love this book, & it just won the Pulitzer Prize. Kingsolver said she went through each chapter of David Copperfield, so I think it mirrors it closely. I‘m not planning to read David Copperfield though! 11mo
Singout @TheBookHippie I‘d love to hear what you think when you read it! 11mo

Cinfhen It‘s so DESERVING of the Pulitzer 💙 11mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, I am thrilled for Kingsolver‘s Pulitzer win with this! I haven‘t read Copperfield either, but I did pull up the Wikipedia page and check out how BK connected them. That was plenty—no need to go back to Dickens. And after I finished Demon, I needed several light and sunny books to balance the bleak story line. 11mo
TheBookHippie @Singout I‘ve read Copperfield, that was my hesitation. I‘ve yet to see someone who has read both. I put it in hold at the library! I‘ll let you know! 11mo

In this retelling of Jane Eyre, Jane is working as a waitress before she takes a job as a legal secretary for grumpy, difficult Edward. But Edward isn‘t so grumpy or difficult when he is with Jane. As the two grow closer Jane struggles with the differences in their circumstances and secrets in Edward‘s past come to light. This was a clever update but for me it was only a light pick.

Oh I loved this! Demon as a narrator was just heartbreakingly gorgeous - self-aware but also naive to the world around him.

This is my favourite Kingsolver book; it felt almost autobiographical and I learned so much about Appalachia and the opioid crisis, but it was less preachy and less didactic than some of her other novels.
