For #ominousoctober today - here‘s a book I coincidentally got out of the library today that‘s very relevant to witches! It‘s a very readable academic text covering magic all over the medieval world, a very cool book

This was a comprehensive history of the golden age of magic. At times it read a bit like a dull textbook. It further cemented how much of an ass Houdini was. Yet, I have to admit, the book was always a bit more interesting when profiling him and his massive ego. Most of all, this book made me wish magicians still had TV specials like Copperfield and Henning did when I was a kid! 3.5/5

TheAromaofBooks Those huge-ego guys are obnoxious, yet sometimes they really do seem to need that ego to accomplish what they do 😂 3y
JoeMo @TheAromaofBooks It‘s so true, and they‘re often the ones that get remembered by history. Like in Houdini‘s case, he was a great escape artist but a so-so magician….but he‘s the most remembered magician ever! It certainly helps he died when relatively young and there have been mysteries surrounding him between the false stories about his death and the Halloween seances his wife held annually to try and make contact with him. Attention #ReadersGoneRogue !!
Ok, here's a mix. 3 fiction, 3 non fiction. I think I'm rooting for the occult mind, parallel myths, or one of the fictions the most 🤣 but vote away! Or veto away! Whichever is easier!
Actually I feel like @BookishTrish said she'd read BHPB, but I could be misremembering 🤔
@FantasyChick

FantasyChick Oooh I'd be down for Occult or the Sarah Waters for sure! 3y
Andrea4 @FantasyChick yea, love these choices! @BookishTrish what about you? 3y
BookishTrish Ive read the Sarah Waters but am happy with all the others! 3y

This was my #LMPBC book for January so I don't want to say too much. Basically, I really liked the story, but really didn't like the main character haha She was incredibly self-absorbed, and I thought she stayed that way all the way through.

Final book for #JumpStart2022 as I did finish this Monday!! @Lizpixie @Clwojick
#Pantone2022 - Fragile Sprout - it seemed like it matched better in real life haha @Clwojick

AsYouWish Yay!!! Have you ever watched the movie?? I think it was on Hallmark and they still play it every once in a while. I liked the movie (but that could be more so because Skeet Ulrich is in it and I have a small…okay major crush on that man 😁)💙💙💙💙 3y
Lizpixie Well done you!👏👏👏 3y
Librarybelle Another great choice for so many prompts!! 3y

5/5⭐ The author's thesis is that magic, religion, and science are three equal parts of a triple helix, all work together, and all are equally necessary for a healthy world view. He does a superb job of defending that thesis via a survey of worldwide practices throughout history and how magical, religious, and scientific thought co-evolve over time. (cont'd ⬇) #bookspinbingo #doublespin

hissingpotatoes The book culminates in a strong argument that more magical (i.e. participatory) views need to be reincorporated into modern Western scientific and religious viewpoints in order to combat the current ecological disaster. The author does a phenomenal job of reframing magical practices, often seen as silly and unscientific, as legitimate and logical methods of trying to understand the world and humans' place in it. 3y
