#RedRoseSeptember #day5 #HitTheNorth My next read is set the most north you can get & still be on the planet! It‘s 1937 and Jack has joined an expedition to the Arctic Circle. Leaving Norway by ship spirits are high, but the Arctic Summer is brief & ends up alone after his companions desert him. Soon, the sun goes down for months & the sea freezes and Jack is trapped. But alone, he‘s not. Something is waiting in the dark. #SomethingWickedFall

arlenefinnigan Love the cover ❤️ 5y

In 1918 most of the person on Iceland were wondering whether the Spanish Flu or war would #HitTheNorth. However, for Máni Steinn there are other things to worry about - most pressing: being queer in a country that doesn‘t accept you.

This short book packs a punch, and I would highly recommend it!

#RedRoseSeptember

Cinfhen Oh, totally new to me xx Thanks for the recommendation 😁 5y
arlenefinnigan Oh this sounds excellent. (see this is what annoys me when people make out we're living in the worst of times now. 1918 was worse, really.) 5y

All of these books I‘ve read #HitTheNorth in their title whether the Adirondack Mountains in the tagged book, Alaska in True North, North Korea, or Northanger Abbey. 🧭

Cinfhen Fabulous collage 🙌🏻💜 5y

#redroseseptember #hitthenorth I think this qualifies as north, right?

Cinfhen Ha!! 5y
arlenefinnigan I loved this. I heard an interview with Neil Gaiman where he said the only bad review he'd seen of it what someone saying "there's no original stories here, it's all just old Norse myths!" "well..... I thought I'd made that clear in the title.... It's like buying a pizza and complaining 'this is just dough with tomato and cheese on!'" 5y

Glinda is the Good Witch of the South in the book, but North in the movie. #hitthenorth She tells Dorothy she‘s always had the power to have #sweetsuccess in going back to Kansas. As for #whatyoulove, it‘s no secret I ❤️ Oz. 😊🌪👠🌈 #RedRoseSeptember #SoulSeptember #SelfImprovementSept #multitasking

#RedRoseSeptember #HitTheNorth

I haven't actually read this yet. It's from the 'ol tbr pile. Picked it up a couple years ago at a used book sale. 🤷‍♂️

I like the author though so I plan on getting to it...someday. 😜

arlenefinnigan That sounds VERY complicated! 5y

AlaMich I liked this a lot, although it would have benefited very much from some thoughtful page shaving. Like about 200 pages, if I remember correctly. 5y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @AlaMich Its a chunkster for sure. I'll get to it one day. ☺️ 5y

North and South (Revised) | Elizabeth Gaskell

Pickpick

#RedRoseSeptember Day 5: #HitTheNorth reminded me of this classic reviewed by Iphigene: “Gaskell‘s novel is a reflection of a changing era. Take Margaret, a woman raised in the South where things were traditional—women don‘t shake men‘s hand or work in factories. Ironically, her so called conservatism (unfamiliarity with the Northern Ways) is a misfit to the south.” Her full review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-1B

arlenefinnigan I've never read any Elizabeth Gaskell, I really should. 5y
Kimberlone I really love this book (totally underrated) and the bbc miniseries is super good too. 5y

Winter Study | Nevada Barr

#RedRoseSeptember

(Day 5 - #HitTheNorth)

*Anna Pigeon must hit the north in this, Barr‘s 14th in the series. Sent to Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior, Anna is expected to trail the wolf study team there, so that she can bring that knowledge back to her bailiwick in the Rocky Mountain Nat‘l Park. But it wouldn‘t be an Anna Pigeon mystery without danger and death at every turn, and here, the wolves are beginning to act in unnatural ways.

arlenefinnigan Wolves gonna wolf, whatcha gonna do 🤷‍♀️ 5y
EadieB @Cinfhen That book looks interesting! 5y

gradcat @arlenefinnigan & @Cinfhen 😂🤣😂😅 You two are hilarious! 😆 5y
gradcat @EadieB I always liked Nevada Barr‘s books. I haven‘t one in a long while, but I know I read almost all of them. They‘re really great if you like the outdoors, + you learn a LOT about the national parks featured in the books. Barr traveled to all of them to do her research, and the books reflect that. ♥️ 5y
EadieB @gradcat I am reading a new one from NetGalley but it's a bit different than what she usually writes. 5y
gradcat @EadieB Yes, I noticed when I was looking back on her Anna Pigeon series that she hasn‘t published one since 2016. But I did see where she‘s published a couple of standalones more recently. Do you like the one you‘re reading now? 5y
EadieB @gradcat I‘m about halfway and I‘m not sure as it was kinda slow up to this point. I‘m hoping the ending will redeem it. 5y
gradcat @EadieB I‘ll be looking for your review, then. ♥️ 5y

The Call of the Wild | Jack London

Pickpick

Novella told from the perspective of Buck, a family dog who is dog napped and forced to #hitthenorth as a sled dog in the Yukon Territory at the turn of the 20th century. I think London anthropomorphized Buck‘s motivation too much at times but it was otherwise a pretty compelling adventure that doesn‘t shy away from the brutality of the era.

#RedroseSeptember

arlenefinnigan Sounds good. Cool cover. 5y
Cinfhen Very atmospheric!!! An assigned book both my boys enjoyed 🤓 5y
Ruthiella @arlenefinnigan I think the illustration is a woodcut. There‘s something lovely but old fashioned about it. 😀 (edited) 5y
Ruthiella @Cinfhen I can see how it would be assigned in school. Particularly the length is good. 😀 5y
Cinfhen That was definitely a plus for them 😂 5y
