The Call of Cthulhu | H.P. Lovecraft

Pickpick

The Call of Cthulhu (and other stories), by H.P. Lovecraft (1928 etc)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Premise: Classic tales of terror and dread about the potential awakening of a long-dormant power.

Review: This is as powerfully atmospheric and dread-inspiring as reputed. It‘s also as unabashedly racist as reputed. It‘s a telling window into the anxieties of an age that has sadly proven to be not as bygone as we‘d thought. Yikes. ⬇️

Mattsbookaday Bookish Pair: There have been many anti-racist and queer re-appropriations of Lovecraft‘s universe, including Jordan L. Hawke‘s Whyborne & Griffin series and Matt Ruff‘s Lovecraft Country 3d

3✨ I struggled with the racism in this book. Especially, when a certain character dies because of hands that should protect. This launches Black Tom into what he becomes. It is pretty dark and gory, but I like the connection to Lovecraft that gave major creep vibes. #FableBR @Littlewolf1

This was better than the first volume. Two of the crew go on a mission to find a missing crew member and what they find is beyond crazy.

This is the composite image of the cover art by JaeHoon Choi for the eight books in the Korean horror series, Lovecraft Reanimated, three of which have been translated into English, and I hope more of them will be despite a bit of unevenness in the current offerings.
The top right cover with the image of an Elder Thing from HPL's "At the Mountains of Madness" looks especially intriguing!

While Lovecraft became a problematic writer, he was at the top of weird fiction lists. I also learned the word phantasmagorical from him.

It might be chilly and raining at Jellystone today but that is not going to stop me from enjoying fresh squeezed ice cold lemonade and reading on the cabin deck. The sound of the rain and thunder just add some atmosphere to the story. My son is having fun playing in the rain while I stay dry undercover. (My husband is napping…lol)
