Lovecraft Country
Lovecraft Country: A Novel | Matt Ruff
The critically acclaimed cult novelist makes visceral the terrors of life in Jim Crow America and its lingering effects in this brilliant and wondrous work of the imagination that melds historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian horror and fantasy. Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, 22-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle Georgepublisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guideand his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhiteheir to the estate that owned one of Atticuss ancestorsthey encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours. At the manor, Atticus discovers his father in chains, held prisoner by a secret cabal named the Order of the Ancient Dawnled by Samuel Braithwhite and his son Calebwhich has gathered to orchestrate a ritual that shockingly centers on Atticus. And his one hope of salvation may be the seed of hisand the whole Turner clansdestruction. A chimerical blend of magic, power, hope, and freedom that stretches across time, touching diverse members of two black families, Lovecraft Country is a devastating kaleidoscopic portrait of racismthe terrifying specter that continues to haunt us today.

A story that blends the terrors of Jim Crow America and Lovecraftian horror with a little bit of history, occult, and fantasy thrown in.

This is such a good book. The writing and story are fantastic. I love how bookish some of the characters are. Highly recommend.

“But stories are like people, Atticus. Loving them doesn‘t make them perfect. You try to cherish their virtues and overlook their flaws. The flaws are still there, though” Ruff punches a little out of his weight class but overall a fun and enchanting group of stories that keep you hooked while reminding you of America‘s deeply bigoted past. I wonder what becomes of Horace 🤔

Just so good!
I haven‘t read any Lovecraft in years but it must have stuck with me because parts of this novel were just so beautiful and familiar. Lots of really disturbing s*** going on there too. I had goosebumps through much of it. A solid read, I‘m looking forward to watching the adaptation next. 4.5🌟

I have to admit I've never actually read anything by HP Lovecraft, but that didn't stop me from loving this book. It was so engrossing, a series of stories (I assume all inspired by different Lovecraftian tales) that all come together in the end, with racism as the central theme. I really want to watch the show now, and of course read some HPL. #Screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

Been having a slumpy week, despite physical and virtual piles of great library books. I did at least make it through the first half of this EXCELLENT series. (Part of why I checked it out was so I could listen to the companion podcast featuring one of the show‘s writers and Ashley C. Ford - it‘s great, too!) Wondering now if I might like the book despite my horror wimpiness…

Round 3 picks. 😁
I wis thinking of going with Yesternight if it is not too close to Silence for the Dead. It might be an interesting comparison since they are close in time period.
What do you think?
If not, here is also another option I‘ve been wanting to read
#LMPBC

BookwormAHN I think Yesternight sounds good and the close time periods could be good. 3y
Avanders Tester night sounds fantastic — i think I‘ll have to add that to the ol‘ wishlist! I thought Lovecraft Country was also *so* good… but not really as “ghosty,” if that‘s what you‘re going for? 3y

I didn‘t realize this would be a collection of independent stories that are loosely connected. I really tried to like it and was disappointed that I just couldn‘t get into it. The stories didn‘t have much character development or progression. Basically a series of events. Hopefully I like the show better.

3-25-21: My 31st finished book of 2021! Chicago, 1954. When his father goes missing, Atticus must embark on a journey to New England to find him. Accompanied by his uncle, George, the author of The Safe Negro Travel Guide and his long time friend, Letitia, Atticus has to manage to make it through a country under Jim Crow laws of segregation and racism and Lovecratian monsters. Two different types of horror rolled into one story. 👍🏼📖#️⃣3️⃣1️⃣

GidgetsTreasures75 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #lovecraftcountry #mattruff The HBO series is a fantastic depiction of the book but 10 times more gruesome! (edited) 4y

This is a book of interconnecting short stories and racism is the theme throughout. I want to say off that bat that I have only read one Lovecraft book so I probably didn't get the full depth of this novel however I could see The Shunned House reflected in one of the stories. From other reviewers who have read a lot of Lovecraft they of course saw a lot more under tones, themes and similarities than I did. Overall I enjoyed this one.

#12booksof2020 day 2:

Lovecraft Country was my favorite read for my zoomtastic book club this year, and I am excited for the HBO series. I think Ruff did a great job riffing off of all of the different types of stories HPL wrote, and repurposing HPL-inspired themes. Ruff is definitely not alone in doing so, esp this year, and I love this trend in reclaiming stories - we should never let orig authors ruin them for us!

Andrew65 Sounds intriguing! 4y

Really good read, it's told in several short supernatural or sci-fi stories with a main story line arching through them. They were not too scary, the scariest part is the gross racists in Jim Crow America. Each character goes through their own spooky story, with some pretty amazing world building as each story is told. I loved the women characters, all smart and none needing to be saved.

LibrarianRyan I‘ve been watching this on HBO and am a bit Sadi didn‘t read it before the show. 4y
Tera66 @LibrarianRyan Its better you didn't, I watched the first 4 episodes after finishing the book and they really changed a lot of things. Some of my favorite parts and characters were completely different. I like the adaptation, but it's kind of its whole other thing, you could still read the book since they are so different. 4y
